Running Linux in the browser

I haven’t seen it mentioned on Planet yet, could it be that nobody
heard? I’ve seen lots of cool browser demos lately but this one really
blows me away: jslinux by Fabrice Bellard. This is a real x86 emulator
written in JavaScript and running Linux, not a fake Linux terminal.
The emulated hardware is somewhat limited (e.g. no FPU) but this
doesn’t make packing an emulator into less than 20 kB of JavaScript
code less impressive. The emulator loads a bunch of binary Linux
images and — voilà, Linux boots up.

It is also really fast, booting up takes 7 seconds in Firefox 4 for
me, and all the other operations don’t take much longer than they
would on a real system.

In a lot of ways, this reminds me of the Knoppix liveCD hack. And
see how far that idea has gone. With a javascript emulation of the
x86 cpu running Linux, more innovation is on tap!

New home needed for slugnet mailing list and wiki

Hi All,

I'm looking for a volunteer who can help to sponsor a VM for the
longstanding slugnet mailing list and the LUGS wiki. The machine it is
hosted on will soon not be available. If someone can come up with a VM,
I can still assist with administering the mailing list, etc.

Michael.

Re: New home needed for slugnet mailing list and wiki

Hi

I have a hosted Wordpress multisite setup.

I can offer to setup an account for LUGS if you can move the mailing list and wiki to WP.

Michael,

Why not move it to google groups and google pages? No admin needed and free

Re: New home needed for slugnet mailing list and wiki

Hi Anand,

If someone has the time to do that and that is the consensus, then that would be a reasonable option.

Although I think it will be quite easy to rsync the VM contents to a new VM instance and change the DNS - that was the sort of time I was thinking of investing. But it does require a new VM instance somewhere.

To transfer the existing content from the wiki to a new wiki system with a different format, and import the 7 or so years of list archives and members to a new list system will be substantially more effort. If someone is volunteering to do that, then it is certainly an option.

BTW LUGS should have enough in its bank account for a couple of years worth of a small EBS instance on Amazon Singapore.

Michael.

LUG on Google, I don't think so. I can host this free of charge.
