Hi Deepan ,

Currently , we don't have those stickers but are trying to
come up with a plan to get them after seeing your mail :P. We do however ,
have a Singapore version of the logo. http://www.xp.sg/usg1.png , done by one

Why can't programmers... program?
By Jack Schofield / Out of this world/ Software 02:08pm

Jeff Atwood's Coding Horror blog is covering a real horror: Why Can't
Programmers.. Program
(http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000781.html)?

It seems that, at least in the US, "199 out of 200 applicants for
every programming job can't write code at all. I repeat: they can't
write any code whatsoever."

One solution suggested by Imran at Imranontech is to ask them to
program something simple, such as FizzBuzz, a counting game played in
some British schools. (Using FizzBuzz to Find Developers who Grok
Coding) (http://tickletux.wordpress.com/2007/01/24/using-fizzbuzz-to-find-developers-who-grok-coding)

You know: 1, 2, Fizz, 4, Buzz, Fizz, 7, 8, Fizz, Buzz, 11, Fizz, 13,
14, FizzBuzz....

Aside from global astonishment at the quality of American computer
science education, the really amusing thing about the debate has been
the number of FizzBuzz programs in all sorts of languages that have
been posted in comments -- amusing both because of the variety of
approaches from x86 assembler to Python, and the number of errors they
contain.

Thinkpad quality under Lenovo

Hi all,

Has the legendary IBM thinkpad's build quality suffered under Lenovo?
I've heard some accounts of hard disk problems and RJ-45 connector
faults, as well as someone's motherboard overheating:

http://gssq.blogspot.com/2007/02/i-compressed-some-pictures-at-best.html

Relevant paragraph:

"Frigid Girl's Lenovo laptop came back from the repairman. Apparently
it overheated and the motherboard blew. The man said not to leave it
on for more than 8 hours. If you needed another reason not to buy
Lenovo, that is it."

At the last SLMG, Darrel also mentioned that the build quality of TPs
have declined.

Thanks all! Replies are greatly appreciated!
Wei Jie

My advice to new CompSci grads who want to find a programming job is
invariably: "Code a simple toy application and publish it somewhere,
linking to it in your CV". In my case I wrote a simple Mandelbrot viewer
for Windows 3.1 (yes, that long ago :) using Borland's Turbo C++. Back
then I had to work part-time to afford the compiler, and had no money
left for books, so I had the dreadful task of reading the developer's
Guides. Those who've never seen a Borland Developer's guide should get
on their knees right now and thank Ye Gods. It's a thick bundle of
environmentally friendly text that's so dense as to make your head hurt
on the first page.

Anyway, I'll stop tooting my own horn and end with this: It's *very*
important to prospective employers to see some enthusiasm and initiative
on a candidate's part.

Cheers
Stephan

I've always known people to bash the Thinkpad even in the days when IBM
made it. One of my major reasons for always buying them is that I can't
stand touch-pads in the 10" and 12" LCD form factors, and everyone else
(read fujitsu lifebook + Sony Vaio) makes crap in the small form factor
notebooks.

This is hard to believe as Lenovo Thinkpads are still rolling off the
same production lines as the IBM Thinkpads, being assembled by the same
workers. Lenovo did not buy the *right* to manufacture, AFAIK they
bought the whole design and manufacturing infrastructure
lock-stock-and-barrel.

Just my 2c, Cheers

Re: Thinkpad quality under Lenovo

I'm not so sure about that. My R51 keeps going and never dies. I push,
shove and kick it around. It just doesn't give up.

The support is incredible too. I left a note on the Lenovo support
website and they came over the next day to replace my LCD hinge on the spot.
(It was a joy to see them strip me laptop into pieces.)

Just go to a showroom and poke around with Lenovo laptops. Hold it by
one hand on the screen or at the arm rest. Feel how solid it is. Now,
repeat with other brands.

Of course, there'll definitely be lemons around. The question is, how
many? I'm sure Lenovo has less such stories floating around than other
brands.

And, they are pretty linux friendly too.

For simple home/personal use etc, I found Kmoney great. It was very
easy to understand and it just worked. Before this I'd tried GnuCash
and found it too hard to comprehend.

Maybe you can give both a try and see how they work out?

[OT] Linux Friendly Accounting Software?

I'd like some suggestions :

I am looking for an accounting package. Preferably Linux based - commercial ($$) is fine. Must be localised (SGD/USD) . Has anyone used or is using a Linux based accounting package ( MyBooks Pro or Quasar)? How about MYOB?

What software do you use for your accounting needs?

PS: I downloaded and tried Apache OFB but seems too complicated (to use, install is straight-forward), Quasar installation is not so clean. I am planning to try out MyBooks.

Regards
Anand

I moved to Quasar after trying the gamut of webbased accounting packages
and not liking any of them.
I've been using Quasar for two years now and my accountant (read wife
:), get along with it just fine, and we've done two financial years in
it by now.
It requires some customization up front for setting up your chart of
accounts, but after that it's smooth sailing. If you have any problems
with installation drop me a mail, I might be able to help.

I would stay away from MyBooks Pro. I had a *horrible* experience with
this piece of crap. Ranging from US-specific address entries that force
validation to US-format telephone numbers to dead-slow Java UI. In this
day and age you really have to go out of your way to code slow Java UIs.
I wrote off my purchase price as a loss and moved on to Quasar.

Cheers
Stephan
