IPv6

Hello,
BBC Technology has an article on the June "IPv6 day" saying that the UK
is not in the leading 20 countries. Most of the population have not even
heard about it, yet may need new or updated hardware. I understand that
recent BT hubs are IPv6 capable, but probably most hardware is unknown. Many
modems on sale do not even mention IPv6. I am connected by C&W LLU, and
there has been no mention of IPv6. Will the UK be just told one day to get
on with it?
I could just transfer to FTTC and let someone else sort that part of the
hardware, although I do not need the extra speed.
At least one of my computers, my old faithful Acorn RISC PC, is running
very old software, and would probably need to continue using IPv4, but at
least I have a choice of boxes. Most people will not have a clue.

Linux on Advent laptops

Hi everyone,

Has anyone tried running Linux on recent Advent laptops, specifically the Monza series? I'm particularly concerned about whether the wi-fi will work (it's no use to me if not). PC World have them on clearance and my old Dell is kaput. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

'padding' a print-file with extra lines

Hi

Does anyone know of a utility that will convert a print-file containing
form-feeds such that the converted output has no form-feeds but instead
has added blank lines to effectively 'pad' to N lines per 'page'.

This may seem an odd request, but I need to take bog-standard print-files
with variable lines per page (delimited by form-feeds at arbitrary points)
and convert to files that are a multiple of N lines, such that when run through
a txt2pdf converter the resultant pdf pages align with the original source.
Hope that makes sense.......

Tim

Fedora 16 Startup

Dear GLLUGers,

Is there anyone willing to configure my system so that it uses static IP
and MAC addresses rather than DHCP which I can't disable in spite of
looking through Google.

I'm in SE13 and happy to pay.

Regards,

Mick

Hey all,

I'm looking after 4 racks of servers in London, up until now they've just been locked down as much as possible individually using iptables on each machine (and blocking/removing public interfaces where they're not strictly necessary).  We're in a bit of upheaval at the moment due to going for PCI Compliance and improved security, so I'm securing/segmenting the network as it stands.  As opposed to a central software based firewall, the company's opted to go down the hardware route and get a full fledged firewall.

I don't have a lot of experience with hardware/dedicated firewall appliances, but I've had recommendations for a few different brands, Cisco, Checkpoint, Watchguard and Barracuda.  As you'd all know, attempts to ask our vendor or Google for recommendations has been relatively fruitless in that I feel I'm getting up-sold (as much as possible) on very biased recommendations!

Our requirements aren't huge, it's for a moderate to high use UK website (runs along happily at ~12mbps on our burstable pipe 99% of the time) and will simply need to firewall between 3 internal VLANS (1x DMZ and 2x private).

It's not money dependant really, I just want to get something recommended by someone in the industry who's not in it just for a kick back, and will support our simple requirements, with room for growth of course.

Could anyone shed any light on any of the above vendors, or recommend anyone else (I'm completely open to ideas).  As a base, I've been looking so far at the Watchguard XTM 3 or 5 series and the equivalent model(s) from Barracuda Networks.

Cheers, and thanks in advance

Kerno

Re Rekindling interest in London LUG events

Greetings - I visited the Birchwood pub in Abbey Wood yesterday, ascertaining that they did have WiFi and a function room, but few other facts. I think the process has begun, however, so I'll keep GLLUG updated.

genisoimage and files truncating

i am using genisoimage on this folder ...../home/boztu/Music/Irish Celtic
Music Collection Version 2 .... which contains 2976 mp3s, but it is truncating
the file names after the first word of their title. It appears to be doing this
at the first space that it encounters, so I'm hoping someone can help me by
suggesting a script that I can run that will remove all spaces in the file
names, before .mp3, to enable genisoimage to run properly. The iso it creates
is 18.9gbs in size and I then run split to make it into 4gb sized files to be
burnt to dvds.

Can you help me please?

Thanks
Sharon.

Computing At School

I've previously mentioned the CAS initiative by the BCS. The intention is to change the way computing is taught in schools. The existing "ICT" syllabus has largely been used to teach "digital literacy" which apparently means how to use a word-processor and how to build flashy Powerpoint presentations. At least that's how some schools are delivering the syllabus.

CAS wants to change that by teaching "computational thinking" and programming. Firstly this is an invitation to anyone interested in the teaching of computing to sign up to the project if they have something to contribute. There are two mailing lists one for discussions and one for those making more substantive contributions. The central web site is at http://www.computingatschool.org.uk/ where volunteers will be welcome.

The project includes a number of teachers and other contributors who are trying to avoid being locked into Microsoft Office running on Windows. There are others who would like to try out Linux but have to persuade their network managers that it's safe to do so. Some hand-holding from the Linux community could help.

I have failed to take the necessary step backwards and appear to have volunteered to do some work for the project. I am going to be collating resources available to teachers, students and most importantly the parents of students. The teaching covers every level of student from average seven year olds up to uber-geek hackers of 18 ready to start their own software house from a back bedroom. The aim of the project is to persuade at least some of the students that computing is a sensible career choice and one that they might enjoy. Another objective (my particular hobby-horse) is to teach useful skills to the ones that don't take it up as a career but later have to work with analysts and programmers.

So I'm shaking the begging bowl. I'm not looking for cash, what I need is help from the Linux community. That could be from experienced Linux sysadmins helping deal with the occasional obstructive Linux-phobic network admin. It could be from people who have taught programming and know of accessible resources. I'm particularly interested in hearing from parents whose children have learned to program; any platform, any language.

Feel free to forward this message to anyone else who may be sucker enough to help out. Please email me with any resources that we may be able to use, or if you want more information.

My thanks to those of you who have made suggestions about my changing
MAC address with each new boot.

Delving further, I've discovered that I have a number of wired

The first Wired connection 1 has a MAC address of 00:1B:B1:44:17:6D,
belonging to manufacturer Wistron Neweb Corp in Taiwan. The other three
appear to be local values judging my their MAC addresses.

Could this proliferation be the problem I'm seeing, as outlined at the
beginning of this message?

What should I do to solve the problem? Create an eth0 connection?

Thank you once again for any help you can offer.

Regards,

Mick

Rekindling interest in London LUG events

Hi Guys,

After the somewhat successful relaunch of the Lincolnshire LUG and the
huge turn out at the GitHub London drink up a few weeks ago (although
they did have free beer) I figured it's time to get the largest Linux
user base in the UK back together.

I decided it should start out informally, just to gauge interest, so I
have set up a pub meet so that everyone discuss plans, locations,
dates etc. over a few drinks. I have booked a small section of The
Skinners Arms, 5 minutes walk from Kings Cross, and a good selection
of beer, for the 7th of June from 6pm and I'm really hoping we can
freak out the Landlord.

To get fresh blood in I will be promoting this event as widely as
possible through Geeks of London, London Hack Space and in Linux
Format Magazine to see how much interest there might be when it comes
to doing a more formal LUG.

If there are no major objections I would like to put this through the
announcements mailing list too.

Matt
