Security Camera setup

I have a friend who's getting unauthorized "visits" from her deadbat ex. I'd
like to set up a security camera that will capture the images of anybody who
comes and goes when she's not home. I know that there are PC Cameras and
software packages that will use the camera as a motion detector and variously
post images to a web page or at least start recording. Is anyone familiar
with these things?

Is there a package that will do this in Linux, and if so, what hardware do I
need?

Re: Security Camera setup

You can go Linux based and use a stand-alone camera like the Stardot
Technologies system, or the Axis models. If it's for a dial-up location,
the Stardot models are a lot more reliable (something about the scripting),
plus I like them overall for features. Both cameras allow you to add
external triggers, which would be a motion sensor in this case. A clever
disguise and viola!

Debian package for apache-ssl?

Does anyone know what would be going on with my apache-ssl not
working? I'm using the testing version of apache . . . if the stable
version has apache-ssl working . . . how do I go backwards to that version?

I have another friend with exactly the same problem. "Zoneminder" is
working quite well. Take a look at

	http://www.zoneminder.com/

I'm toying with the idea of a filter enhancement to make it handle
things like the shadows of leaves on the ground, when the tree to
which they are attached sways in the wind.

It can use a wide array of webcams.

What's a setup like that going to cost (note the deadbeat ex in the equation)?

Around $500 or so, depending on model. I don't have the newest price
sheets in front of me. If the person has a computer, has Linux on it, has
time to install and play with the drivers, and then time to play with
software and other stuff . . . sure there are cheaper alternatives. Figure
time and costs and you'll find a hardware based solution very
attractive. If your looking for cheap, grab an X10 camera and a VCR
hookup. Cheaper still? Rig up a cheap Walmart video camera ($29) to a
VCR and have a motion detector trip a programmable remote to start recording.
