Timer Slack Controller

From http://lwn.net/Articles/463357/

The "timer slack controller" is a proposed mechanism that would allow
a session management program to adjust the timer tolerances of a group
of processes with a single knob. It seems like a relatively obscure
and harmless feature, but it has been the focus of an intense debate
on the kernel mailing lists. The core question has been seen before:
what measures should the kernel take, if any, to keep poorly-written
applications from hurting performance?

Timers allow a process to request a wakeup at some future time; timer
slack gives the kernel some leeway in its implementation of those
timers. If the kernel can delay specific timers by a bounded amount,
it can often expire multiple timers at once, minimizing the number of
wakeups and, thus, reducing the system's power consumption. Some
processes need more precise timing than others; for this reason, the
kernel allows a process to specify its maximum timer slack with the
prctl() system call. There is, currently, no mechanism to allow one
process to adjust another process's timer slack value; it is generally
assumed that any given process knows best when it comes to its own
timing requirements.

The timer slack controller allows a suitably privileged process to set
the timer slack value for every process contained within a control
group. The patch has been circulating for some time without generating
a great deal of interest; it recently resurfaced in response to the
"plumber's wish list for Linux" which requested such a feature.

This is now becoming absolutely hilarious. With apologies to
people who do not like my sometimes-abrasive attitude, I am
now officially making emails to Vinay a litmus test for
morons [sic!] who post to ILUG-D without caring to look, and
need to find the time to write a blog post about th3 entire
fandango.

Oh, for the record, it is the latest entry in:

Welcome to the club, Mohit.

[Commercial] - 24x7 Support required for Ubuntu Server

Hello Friends,

I am looking for a reputed organisation to provide 24x7 support to our
Ubuntu based server which will be running an email server (satellite) and
an apache+PHP+Postgres application for internal use in our organisation.

This server will have high-availability feature for all services
(Web+mail+DB) and will store all /var data on a NAS.

Support provider will be required to setup the Ubuntu server for deployment
of our LAPP application, time to time necessary configs changes and carry
out other activities related to this server on short notice.

Organisation having an office in Delhi will be preferred.

Please write to me off-list.

Sorry, I missed another important thing: this server would also be required
to undergo and pass the security edits.

any joomla people here-- need help migrating joomla from 1.5.x to 1.7 using jupgrade extension.

Hi Folks,
I need some help.

Am trying to upgrade joomla 1.5 to 1.7 using a joomla extension called jupgrade.

As you would know-- this is not a smooth upgrade but a migration of data.

I will really appreciate if some of you who have done this before drop
me a email-- preferably with your contact number and/or
google-talk/IM/skype ID.

I need to bounce some thoughts off someone who has done this before--
to help me get past a obstacle.

Thanks in Anticipation and best Regards,

Nalin

*
Your Gear:*

  * Your own Laptop of any brand. The model should not be more than
two-years-old. Must support a resolution of 1280 pixels or higher.
These two factors because your laptop should be able to run the
latest versions of modern browsers. Candidates with an Apple laptop
    will have a definite advantage.
  * Roaming internet datacard. Those with a broadband connection preferred.

Ahm, you forget the 3G, WiFi and, or WiMAX (4G) connectivity ;)

I don't think, people using *Laptops *can be a productive as on a good
modern PC or Workstation.

OTOH, designing and, or thinking in terms of design is entirely a
different process compared with coding the same ideas in to a clean
[X]*HTML + CSS pages.
