[FOSSNepal] PolishLinux KDE 4.1 Preview (Rev 802150)

PolishLinux KDE 4.1 Preview (Rev 802150)he state of Plasma can be currently described as 'chaotic'. The reason for that is that its API is being refactored which in result makes it almost impossible to use for a regular human being. Most applets despite continuous development, still experience issues with adjusting to the new API. This results in instabilities and — in some cases — even problem with displaying properly on desktop. Yesterday however, I managed to catch a dev snapshot of KDE 4.1 which allowed me to test the recent changes, at least on the surface. Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce you to "The Revision 802150″.

Desktop

First thing worth noticing is the new looks of KRunner. Unfortunately, on the current stage, it behaves in an unpredictable manner. In some cases after typing one letter I had to wait a few seconds for KRunner to catch it and prompt me with a list of available choices. What is more, it randomly hung up completely, exceeding the maximum response time, forcing KWin to kindly ask me to kill it.

KRunner — new looks

Till now, the only way to add a Plasma applet was to use an icon located in the upper-right corner of the desktop. This time I noticed a new icon, located in the bottom panel. Currently it does not response to my actions so it's hard to state whether it's going to replace the former solution or — perhaps — it will be used to add a new applet to a specific panel. I think though, that the latter makes more sense so it's pretty likely to be the correct guess.

Plasma manager in KDE panel

Dolphin

Dolphin — the file manager — eventually got the feature I've been waiting for: the tab support!

Dolphin with tabs

Phonon

In kdereview tree, the work is in progress to add a new sound engine to Phonon. Now those of you who — for one reason or another — don't like Xine, are given an option to choose GStreamer as the audio output. I have often heard that Gstreamer beats Xine in many areas, especially when the number of supported audio/video formats is concerned.

Sound system settings

Konqueror & WebKit

Some people commented my previous revision stating that Konqueror already used WebKit as the default engine. These comments were incorrect. Last time I presented the Acid3 test results for Konqueror with default KHTML engine. Today however, I compiled the Qt library with WebKit support and the required dependencies. Here is the result for Acid3 for the Konqueror/WebKit duo:

Konqueror / WebKit

Oxygen theme

Only cosmetic changes here: polished tabs and beautified scroll bars.

Oxygen theme

Ozone

As it shows, the default window decoration for KDE 4.1 will not be Oxygen, but its fork, called Ozone. Currently the only difference is that — in contrary to Oxygen — Ozone respects the color scheme changes.

Windows decoration for Ozone theme

KDE Info Center

KDE Info Center has been fully ported to Qt4 library. Let's see how it looks now…

KDE Info Center: Main windows

KDE Info Center: Memory usage

KDE Info Center: Partitions

KWin with Wobbly Windows

Kwin features a new visual effect known to most of you from Compiz: the Wobbly Windows. Only a few days ago the settings panel for this effect had tons of detailed options. Most of these options have been disabled now, the only thing that can be configured is the window deformation level while in motion. This seems more appropriate for a common user since the number of configurable settings was overwhelming before. One minor flaw that I noticed in KWin Wobble Windows is that the window shadow is not properly deformed (it does not adjust to the current shape of the window).

KWin effects

Wobbly effect configuration

Amarok

Amarok is getting closer and closer to its major release. The current changes mostly concern the looks of Plasma applets and streaming sources extensions. It's however worth noting that the application itself proves to be much more stable than before. Amarok also now remembers previously added collections, playlists and — what is crucial — does not crash upon frequent interaction with the user. I'll try to write a separate piece of text about this great multimedia player soon.

Amarok: Let the music play!

Amarok: Last.fm support

K3b

Another crucial KDE app is K3b. It is by far the best open source tool in the world to burn DVDs and CDs, but it also features other things as well. There is a rumor that K3b will be renamed to K4b with its stable release of KDE 4. Whatever its name is or will be, the fact is that it's quite usable even now, in development state.

K3b (K4b)

Let's investigate some configuration options…

K3b settings

Other configuration options

Now it suffices to insert a blank disk and… let it burn!

I hope you liked this new revision, it took some time to prepare it but I promise the next one will appear soon, so check frequently your PolishLinux RSS and stay tuned!

[FOSSNepal] Fwd: {OLPC Nepal} Can we rescue OLPC from Windows?: RMS

Dear All,

Here is what RMS is asking, How are the OLPC things going to take shape in Nepal?
Source: http://www.fsf.org/blogs/rms/can-we-rescue-olpc-from-windows/blogentry_view

Regards,

Hempal Shrestha
====================================================================================

Can we rescue OLPC from Windows?

by Richard Stallman

I read Negroponte's statement presenting the OLPC XO as a platform for Windows in the most ironic circumstances possible: during a week of preparing, under a deadline, to migrate personally to an XO.

I made this decision for one specific reason: freedom. The IBM T23s that I have used for many years are adequate in practice, and the system and applications running on them are entirely free software, but the BIOS is not. I want to use a laptop with a free software BIOS, and the XO is the only one.

The XO's usual software load is not 100% free; it has a non-free firmware program to run the wireless chip. That means I cannot fully promote the XO as it stands, but it was easy for me solve that problem for my own machine: I just deleted that file. That made the internal wireless chip inoperative, but I can do without it.

As always happens, problems arose, which delayed the migration until last week. On Friday, when I discussed some technical problems with the OLPC staff, we also discussed how to save the future of the project.

Some enthusiasts of the GNU/Linux system are extremely disappointed by the prospect that the XO, if it is a success, will not be a platform for the system they love. Those who have supported the OLPC project with their effort or their money may well feel betrayed. However, those concerns are dwarfed by what is at stake here: whether the XO is an influence for freedom or an influence for subjection.

Since the OLPC was first announced we have envisioned it as a way to lead millions of children around the world to a life in which they do computing in freedom. The project announced its intention to give children a path to learn about computers by allowing them to study and tinker with the software. It may yet do that, but there is a danger that it will not. If most of the XOs that are actually used run Windows, the overall effect will be the opposite.

Proprietary software keeps users divided and helpless. Its functioning is secret, so it is incompatible with the spirit of learning. Teaching children to use a proprietary (non-free) system such as Windows does not make the world a better place, because it puts them under the power of the system's developer -- perhaps permanently. You might as well introduce the children to an addictive drug. If the XO turns out to be a platform for spreading the use of proprietary software, its overall effect on the world will be negative.

It is also superfluous. The OLPC has already inspired other cheap computers; if the goal is only to make cheap computers available, the OLPC project has succeeded whether or not more XOs are built. So why build more XOs? Delivering freedom would be a good reason.

The project's decision is not final; the free software community must do everything possible to convince OLPC to continue being (aside from one firmware package) a force for freedom.

Part of what we can do is offer to help with the project's own free software. OLPC hoped for contribution from the community to its interface, Sugar, but this has not happened much. Partly that's because OLPC has not structured its development so as to reach out to the community for help -- which means, when viewed in constructive terms, that OLPC can obtain more contribution by starting to do this.

Sugar is free software, and contributing to it is a good thing to do. But don't forget the goal: helpful contributions are those that make Sugar better on free operating systems. Porting to Windows is permitted by the license, but it isn't a good thing to do.

I am typing these words on the XO. As I travel and speak in the coming weeks, I will point to it in my speeches to raise this issue.

Could anyone tell me why konqueror's (default file
manager for pre-4.0 KDE) isn't good enough? It
already has tab support. Why the heck are they
trying to get dolphin as default file manager? <sigh>

Daaami yaar!! I loved your concept and enthusiasm dude. The greatest thing for one FOSS enthusiast like me is there exist another dude who remember FOSS wherever he goes (especially when excited i.e. seeing snow :) .
And to the irony of our group I don't see any enthusiasm now, even to appreciate the enthusiasm of fellow foss activist. If this same message were here 1 year ago I can imagine lots of replu thanking, congratulating and appericiating ....... sigh!
I don't know why trend is same for almost all organization that exist in our country to be more playful at first and get more corporate like and sluggy later, but feels very bad when it happens to open community like ours.
Anyway this may be because everyone is busy with their own stuff to care bout FOSS, but if you have atleast 1-2 hr in evening be present tomorrow at ubuntu hardy release party being held at IOE energy house tomorrow at 4pm. I promise we will enjoy a lot. Lets rejuvinate, rejoice and enjoy our FOSSpirit, hope to shake hand with lots of you guys there.
