I think you have it backward: the discussion of the bug and a solution
should be taking place in the bug report as early as possible, since
that's where it needs to be eventually anyway.

Can you provide a minimal example (or does this happen also without
input) and a backtrace?

  rst2html --math-output=HTML --traceback

Thanks for the suggestion. This might be a medium-effort task for someone
starting to contribute (requiring to look at the source to see how it is
done in `figure` and copy or re-use the code.

Could you add this to the docutils tracker's feature requests, please?

Appearently, most of my message has been stripped off. :(

I can’t explain that. My original message contained a minimal example, the 
result with Python 2 and the traceback in Python 3.

Well, I’ll just try again.

The following two lines are the example:

.. math::
    \vec{OM}

The following line is the result of `rst2html --math-output=HTML` applied to 
that example with Python 2:

* Applying combining function \vec to invalid string "OM"

git-svn works with the official SVN repo. Besides this, there is a
"contributed" git mirror at git://repo.or.cz/docutils.git

from personal experience i'm convinced that svn stiffles 3rd party 
contribution

Does your DVCS of choice have a plugin for reading and writing from
svn?  bzr does, I don't know about some of the others.  That might be
enough to get you local branches and commits, if that's what you're
missing with SVN.
