Permaculture: The Growing Edge is an antidote to environmental despair, a hopeful and practical look at a path to a viable, flourishing future. The film introduces us to inspiring examples of projects, including a visit David Holmgren's own homestead, tracking deer with naturalist Jon Young, sheet mulching an inner-city garden with Hunters Point Family, transforming an intersection into a gathering place with City Repair and joining mycologist Paul Stamets as he cleans up an oil spill with mushrooms. We interview some of the key figures in the Permaculture movement, including David Holmgren, Penny Livingston-Stark, James Stark, Paul Stamets, Mark Lakeman, Dr. Elaine Ingham, Maddy Harland, and others.

Permaculture is a sustainable system of earth care that offers solutions to many of our grave environmental problems and a hopeful, proactive vision of change. The Permaculture movement, started by Australians Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the nineteen seventies, is now a worldwide network of skilled ecological designers, teachers, food growers, natural builders, environmental activists and visionaries. "Permaculture is the key to a post-carbon future," says Maddy Harlan, editor of Permaculture Magazine.

We will be offering Permaculture: The Growing Edge on both DVD and as a download starting on November 5th. More details will be posted here as soon as we have them.

* Hold a HOUSE PARTY screening - you can now download a poster, a recipe and a set of discussion questions. Take a look at the HOUSE PARTIES page for all the information!

Why This Film?

Today, anyone who loves the earth knows that we face a huge crisis. Climate change, oil spills, toxins and habitat destruction threaten the viability of ecosystems around the world, and damage the life-support systems that we all depend upon.

The reality is alarming and sometimes overwhelming. And yet-solutions to our most grave problems do exist. While governments stall and politicians prevaricate, ordinary people around the world are making changes in their lives and trying out new ways of growing food, providing for human needs, and building community.

Starhawk practices and teaches the system of ecological design called permaculture. Together, Donna Read and Starhawk wanted to document the positive steps people and taking and the solutions that do exist. We believe that people can face huge changes and make enormous efforts when we feel hopeful, that we are best motivated not by fear and alarm but by vision and love. Permaculture: The Growing Edge is our labor of love, exploring just a few examples of the immensely creative and regenerative ideas that are inspiring people around the globe.

Starhawk - an author of eleven books on feminist and earth-based spirituality, an activist, permaculture designer and teacher, and director
of Earth Activist Training. She and Donna co-created Belili productions. See her website at:www.starhawk.org

Donna Read - a producer, director and film editor. She was a member of the National Film Board of Canada's renowned women's studio, Studio D, for many years where she directed the Goddess trilogy and many other films before forming Belili productions.

Please help us write Coppice Agroforestry!/Kickstarter campaign

FORWARDED FROM DAVE JACKE

Hello friends!

We hope this message finds you fulfilled and healthy after a wonderful summer/autumn.  I'm writing because Mark Krawczyk and I have begun writing what will be, to our knowledge, the first North American manual on coppice agroforestry, and we have two favors to ask of you.

For those of you who don't know, coppicing is a traditional forest management practice where deciduous trees get cut during dormancy and then regrow from the stump.  We can later harvest these sprouts to make crafts, fuel, fodder for livestock, and many other useful products. Though humans have coppiced for over 6,000 years, no comprehensive resource exists that describes coppice system design, management, and establishment for our continent, well-suited North American species and projected yields, and the economics of coppice systems.  It's a big gap to fill and we're eager to fill it as best we can!

We're already well underway, writing, researching, and building connections and a portfolio of case studies.  Mark will travel to the west coast and Midwest this December to learn more about how folks have been using coppice there.  Dave has begun combing the literature for any and all existing research on the subject so we can consolidate what researchers know.  He is also building a database of species and their coppicing characteristics.  We hope to complete our first draft by winter's end.
The first favor: while we've contacted publishers about this project (and they are interested), we've elected to self-fund our manuscript development.  We ask you, our friends, colleagues, students and supporters, to help make it happen by engaging in our Kickstarter campaign.  If you're not familiar with it, this wonderful web-based service enables folks to financially support creative projects in return for various creative rewards and a connection to the project's creative process.  Like Community Supported Agriculture, this Community Supported Authoring structure helps us maintain our financial viability while we create a resource the permaculture community needs. Even small amounts-$5 and $10 offerings-will help us achieve and pass our $5,000 goal so we can travel to interview and photograph practitioners, acquire resources from overseas, and cover at least some of our living expenses while we work.  Check out the write-up, video, and rewards on our campaign page at:
The second favor: if you or someone you know already uses coppicing as a way to produce crafts, biochar, animal fodder, or other products, we would LOVE to hear about it.  Please send the person's contact information to both of us at the email addresses above.  Also, if you have or know of any written materials, research papers, or references, we'd also love to hear about those.  You can send references to Dave at davej-4qqC7QAnL53umQtgBMjj7jhGvelKEmTk@public.gmane.org or at 308 Main St. #2C, Greenfield, MA 01301.

We feel grateful for whatever support you can provide (moral and otherwise) and will deeply appreciate you passing this email along to friends, listservs, and networks that may also be interested in helping support our work.  (I guess that makes three favors!  Thanks!
:-)

With sincere thanks,

Mark and Dave

Sobonfu Some is coming to Santa Barbara

Event Hosted by Wilderness Youth Project

There is a deep longing among people in the West to connect with something bigger -- with community and spirit. People know there is something missing in their lives, and believe that the rituals and ancient ways of the village offer some answers. -- Sobonfu Some

Sobonfu is a daughter of the Dagara tribal community. Dagara rituals are about healing, acknowledgment of people and their gifts, and making spirit tangible by preparing mind, body and soul to receive the spirituality that is all around us. With regular use of ritual, we find our way back to wholeness, peace and acceptance of self and others. She will be sharing her grief ritual with our community as a way to release grief, lighten your soul, let your true spirit be heard and help you become more balanced.

The weekend will be held in Santa Barbara, exact location is TBD. Details to come.

Parking Strip Becomes Garden with Free Produce for Neighbors (Video)

FOOD & HEALTH (food)

From backyard permaculture to urban homesteads, we see plenty of people ripping up lawns and trying to grow more food for themselves and their families. But sometimes, it's more about what you can do for others than what you can do for yourself. We've already seen what happens when neighbors remove fences and start gardens, and now we've come across a pair of women who planted up the parking strip in-front of their house with vegetables, and then just invited the neighbors to help themselves. What happened next is quite beautiful.
When Rainey Hopewell suggested turning the parking strip infront of the house she shared with Margot Johnston into a vegetable garden for the community, Margot clearly thought she was crazy. But they went ahead anyway, and even chalked messages on the sidewalk to explain which produce was ready for harvest.

Far from becoming a magnet for freeloaders, the gesture has created a sense of community around what has become known as the Haultain Common, and now neighbors and friends come and share the labor, and the produce, with Rainey and Margot. It's inspiring stuff.

About PEAK MOMENT TV
tp://www.peakmoment.tv/
Peak Moment Conversations: Locally Reliant Living for Challenging Times
An online television series featuring people creating resilient communities for a more sustainable, lower-energy future. Programs range from permaculture farms to electric bikes, ecovillages to car-sharing, emergency preparedness to careers for the coming times. As of May 2010, over 170 half-hour programs are available online.
Our programs have had over 1.5 million viewings on this site, on YouTube, Energy Bulletin, Blip TV, and up to fifty community-access TV stations nationwide. Programs are produced by Janaia Donaldson (producer and host) and Robin Mallgren (videographer and editor) of Yuba Gals Independent Media.
Peak Moment TV emerged out of our desire to find models among grassroots entrepreneurs working to create a sustainable future. From a start in our small-town Northern California community access TV studio in early 2006, we expanded our scope that summer by visiting over 20 West Coast communities and recording more than 140 half-hour Peak Moment conversations. In 2010 we plan to return to the Pacific Northwest to tape updates and new programs.
Peak Moment Specials
We also produce longer programs, including "Introduction to Permaculture", a comprehensive weekend course; the "Best of Peak Moment" series featuring collections on Backyard Gardens, Permaculture, and Local Business; "Peak Everything", a presentation by Richard Heinberg, and "A Renaissance of Local", a 3-day conference near Boulder, Colorado.
Behind the Scenes
We live in rural Nevada City. Our business is named for the nearby South Yuba River, a part of the Wild and Scenic river system in California. We live on 160 acres of forest land, in a 1500 square-foot off-grid home using about 10% of the electricity of the average American home (including home office). Our home is heated by a wood stove using deadfall wood from their property. Propane heats the cookstove, on-demand water heater and backup generator (needed only during extended gray-day periods in winter). Not yet energy independent, but moving in that direction!
