No, isn't 3 half-paddles at 120 degrees to each other minimal?

That should work, with appropriate mixing
of roll/yaw/pitch inputs to three actuators.

(Similarly, it should be possible to steer a three-finned
air vehicle with one control surface on each fin.)

RS-232 analyzer

A while back I mentioned that I have the Greenleaf ASYNC for Windows RS-232
analyzer but the software version I have doesn't work in Win-00 or
XP. Some people expressed interest in having access to software like this
and I have a suggestion for something that runs in the latest Windows, is
cheap, but doesn't have all the features of Greenleaf.

It's "Protocol Analyzer" from www.haytech.com.au , it's free for 15 days
and they give you the pinout to make your own cable (about $6 for parts at
Radio Shack). I'm currently using it and it's worth much more than I paid
for it.

At $20 for registration I might actually pay them for it, much cheaper than
getting the update to my Greenleaf kit.

Gizmocopter update

Since it has been awhile...

We figured out the serial problem. Not sure what was starting a getty on
the 1st serial port as we had changed all the usual config files so that
there wouldn't be anything on that line. There was still a getty process
starting on that port. I then created more problems while trying to fix
that. Most notably not having any console or other access into the
system and while fixing that, corrupting the filesystem.

Last night we re-flashed the flash drive and I changed the serial port
settings in the control code to use the third serial, leaving the first
to a console, and the second to the micro-controller. I tested the setup
this evening. Everything works well, so over the next few nights I'll be
getting batteries charged and a few other little things worked out for
flight tests this weekend.

Good work.

I've had endless problems over the years with serial ports. A lot has
turned out to be crappy serial software in Windows (like HyperTerm,
HyperAccess is better...a little).

I also had problems with Siemens integrated UART chips on Sun systems. On
full auto they get overflows when talking to a Windows machine, the Siemens
chips don't like getting 17 extra characters after they set flow control to
STOP.
