Unable to attend mtg

Hi ...

It turns out the "child birthing" classes we start today run from 6:30
to 9:30, not 6:30 to 7:30 like I seemed to think. We have these every
Tuesday for the next 6 or 7 weeks except Sep 19th. Since we haven't
had a meeting since early Aug I was reluctant to move the Sep meeting
to the 19th. If people are willing, we could move it to next Monday.
Otherwise I'll be unavailable until December (I'll likely have a
newborn around the time of the Nov meeting so it's unlikely I'll be
awake enough to make it).

[Fwd: The fate of a recent Dnepr rocket launch.]

Scarfed the forward message from a local Ham list.

Also an article 2nd page Washington Post claims NASA has lost the the original tape of the first moon landing including Armstrong's "one step" remark.  Well to be fair NASA said it wasn't lost it's just that they can't find it. There are lower res copies made by actually video taping a monitor showing the original footage as the format NASA used wasn't compatible with regular TV standards.  They're working on finding the data. Maybe we'll have to go back for a retake.

Mars peroxide

The availability of hydrogen peroxide in Martian soil won't be high
enough to mine it. If the hypothetical production is dependent on water
vapor, it will be extremely scarce. The amount that accumulates will
level off at some minute contamination percent as (wind driven) motion
of upper dust layers exposes the peroxide to solar UV and it breaks
down. If the accumulation is large enough to produce the results seen in
Viking experiments, we can set a lower limit to peroxide percent. 1% was
mentioned. At that level how much soil would we have to turn over to
accumulate a USABLE quantity say 10 tonnes? Too much I would guess.
the man to ask would be Prof. John S lewis at U of A Tucson.
