That's...unfortunate. You have done a lot of great work for the site,
worthy of a medal. Melanie has some boots to fill. Hope your personal
reasons will go away.

[Skate] Off-topic: Amsterdam

Pardon for cross-posting. I'm arriving at Amsterdam late next
Wednesday and need a place to stay before I go on to Groningen in the
morning. So if you know a reasonably priced B&B or similar I would be
happy if you could advise me. I'd like to meet any listmember who's
there then, too, of course, or the following Monday when I return
from Groningen.

Best greetings,
LEF

[Skate] uni-koeln awards: the results

Hi,

Voting is closed and here are the results of the vote. There were less votes
than in previous years (only 35, whereas we had 146 in 2006). This might
reflect the lowering interest in speed skating that has been heard on other
occasions too.

Perhaps the low turn-out also caused quite a lot of ties. They were resolved
by looking at a one-country-one-vote election.

We start with the results of the best skater per country. The skaters with a
(*) got votes, although they were not on the shortlists.

Votes in category Best Skater from ARGENTINA
1. CHAVES, Federico -- ARG 14 votes
2. SOSA, Luciana -- ARG 3 votes
3. CHAVES, Gaston -- ARG 1 vote
(*)

Votes in category Best Skater from AUSTRALIA
1. LOSE, Joshua -- AUS 16 votes
2. GREIG, Daniel -- AUS 14 votes
3. LOCHLAND, Brooke -- AUS 2 votes

Votes in category Best Skater from AUSTRIA
1. ROKITA, Anna -- AUT 26 votes
2. BITTNER, Vanessa -- AUT 4 votes
3. HEIDEGGER, Linus -- AUT 1 vote
(*)
4. PICHLER, Christian -- AUT 1 vote

Thanks Marnix for the vote for my son. However, I think he needs way more time and progress to be worthy of such
titles. :)

RE: [Skate] uni-koeln awards: the results

Marcel, thanks for organizing this voting, it shows in its diverse results on the 'Most" categories, that
this has been an exciting year with lots of things to discuss or think about. Now, with the inline season
fully commencing, new interesting matches are coming up. The ECh is in the Netherlands this year!

[Skate] Oscar Diary

Hi,
I've finally found time to publish the Feb 12 installment of the
diary: http://www.ortygia.no/Skoyter/Oscar/eod110212.shtml

You can also read it here if you don't mind losing formatting and
images:

More records

A hundred years ago today, Roald Amundsen was on his way to his first
depot site along with Kristian Prestrud, Helmer Hansen and Hjalmar
Johansen. Although a Sunday, they didn’t rest today. Rather they
drove 40km instead of the 28 they had planned for the day, in spite
of being encumbered with a thick fog all along. They were lightly
dressed due to the unusually high temperature, only 10 centigrades
below, and they named the long hill they were climbing
Underbuksebakken—that is “Underpants Hill”. Some of the men actually
slept with their socks off inside their sleeping bags this night.

For Scott a little further west the weather conditions were better,
though cloudy and particularly dark in the south with heavy snow
clouds. During the day his party marched 16km. The poorest ponies
slowed them down, especially the one driven by Evans, Blossom. Her
hooves were smaller, and she often broke through the crust, got tired
and lagged behind. They set up camp close to 79°S and took exact
bearings, as they planned to lay down a depot there. Scott decided to
send the three weakest ponies back with their drivers before the rest
of the party were to go on south the next day.

In Kristiania it was cloudy, too, but calm, and the ice conditions at

Re: [Skate] Oscar Diary

Hupps! I forgot to add this important item:

On the Øyeren lake, Båstad Ungdomslag arranged a meet for locals,
where Kr. Spjutvik from Trøgstad won the 500m in 58,0 and A. Brøtmet
from Høland the 2000 m in 4.12,2, which is perhaps still the track
record in the distance. But the ladies were invited, too. They skated
a 500m, and here, Anna Muggeby from Båstad set a NEW WORLD RECORD
with 84,4. The former record was the 85,0 of Konstanse Pedersen
reported on Jan. 19 this year. Maybe it’s time for ladies to get
speedy as well?
