RE: [Skate] Eerik Idarand

In the national results the ISU gave (see mail of Marcel Warnaar) Eirik
Idarand is not mentioned, despite the several national records he skated
last season! Is this a confirmation of what Finn read in the Baltic Times.
Rather drastic to leave him out of the results!

Did they?

I think it was more like every skater with some ambitions left their local clubs at an early
age, to join one of the big clubs.

So, for instance, the 'Tønsberg trio' of the late 60's actually came from different towns and
different clubs in the Vestfold region. So was the case for most other top level skaters at
that time: Most went to Oslo; others to cities and clubs closer to home. Those of them who
continued skating after ending their international carreer, went back to local clubs (if not
always their original one).

So the big clubs were the 'regional teams' of those days, with the human and (as far as it
went) economical resources needed to develop top level skaters.

Re: [Skate] Eerik Idarand

If a skater wants to change from country, he has to wait for at least a
year, before he can compete for his new country. The fact that Idarand is
not listed as an Estonian here, will be an advantage for him....

[Skate] Junior World Cup

We have to give some credits to ISU to come up with this!!

This means that youngsters up to 19 get something more than just the WJC every year!

And also nice to include the WJC in this series - goof idea to do that in senior World Cup as well!

Also qualification-limits are not that bad:

Ladies Men
500 m 46,00 41,50
1000 m 1.32,00 1.24,00
1500 m 2.25,00 2.10,00
3000 m / 5000 m 5.10,00 4.40,00 (3000 m)

And since lodging will be paid by the organisations - it's a great chance to stimulate the members to take
their recruting more serious. Thery even support small teams more than the bigs!

f) The organizer is obliged to pay or reimburse board and lodging expenses from dinner the evening before
until breakfast on the morning after the Competition for (up to) 2 skaters and 1 team leader from each
participating Member.

The allowed entries:
An ISU Member may enter a maximum of 10 competitors per category (10 ladies and 10 men) for an ISU Junior World
Cup Competition. Subject to the qualifying times criteria of paragraph 4.1 above, maximum 5 competitors
may be entered for each individual event. A maximum of one team may be entered for each of the Team Pursuit events.
However, for the final Competition in the ISU Junior World Cup 2008/2009 an ISU Member may enter a maximum of
5 competitors per category (5 Ladies and 5 Men), and a maximum of 3 competitors for each individual event.
For the ISU World Junior Speed Skating Championships 2009 the entry quotas and entry rules for these
Championships apply.

[Skate] supplement to ISU comm. 1521

ISU seems not yet used to skating-results in june - so they had a too early deadline for their overview of
national best-results. Since the season-break is july 1st (who decided to do that? Very discriminating
for the Southern Hemisphere!!)

This strange rule made following review for Argentin the correct one

Marnix Koolhaas:

> Only negative impliccation: this will put the focus of young skaters even more to single
distances. End of allround in the near future?

Agreed: Very positive intitiative, with some hints of how to organize the real WCp in the
future.

But of course it's utter stupid to focus junior meets on the aspects of speed skating that's
less appreciated by the fans. More than two decades of single distance focus has shown that
this is NOT 'the future of speed skating' -- it's an effective method to decrease the fanbase...

[Skate] No visa for cheek

Shame shame shame the future president of the US can't get into China!!!

 From yahoo news:

Olympic gold medalist and outspoken Darfur activist Joey Cheek has had
his visa revoked by the Chinese embassy, hours before the speedskating
champion was set to fly to China. And he wasn't even planning on wearing
a mask when he got there.

Chinese officials don't need a reason to revoke anyone's visa but, in
their eyes, they had plenty of reasons to snatch Cheek's. He is the
founder of Team Darfur, a group of 70 athletes whose goal it is to raise
global awareness of the human-rights violations taking part in the
Darfur region of Sudan. China's military, economic and diplomatic ties
to Sudan have been well-publicized in the lead-up to the Games."

Olympics: China revokes visa of US Olympic medallist and activist

Joey Cheek is the president and co-founder of Team Darfur, a group of
athletes formed to help end ethnic killings in Sudan

Elana Schor in Washington (guardian.co.uk)

Wednesday August 06

Chinese authorities have abruptly revoked the visa of 2006 winter Olympic
gold-medallist and Darfur activist Joey Cheek, prompting a protest by the US
government and further marring the start of the Beijing games.

Cheek is the president and co-founder of Team Darfur, a group of athletes
formed to nudge China into helping end the ethnic killings in Sudan without
derailing the Olympics.

Cheek, who won the 2006 winter Olympic speed-skating competition, said his
visa was yanked hours before his slated departure for China.

"I didn't see it coming," Cheek told the Associated Press. "That was a big
shock."

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said the US would formally object to the
manoeuvre against Cheek, which came hours before George Bush prepares to
publicly criticise China's human rights record.

Bush plans to put the US on record "in firm opposition to China's detention
of political dissidents, human rights advocates and religious activists"
during a speech tomorrow in Thailand, according to an advance copy released
