You can't blame Bart for results that happens to the team this
season. I don't think he was in the US until just a short while ago
and had no influence on what the team did this past summer.

The person writing the previous messege must have applied for the US
national team job and didn't get it so is going to bash Bart any
chance they get. Am I right?

Its funny how it is so easy to point the finger unless you know
exactly what is going on in a program. People have good and bad
seasons and there are many fingers to point when someone either skates
good or bad.

Bart has only been in the US program for a short while and if you are
going to point the finger at someone, point it at USS and not Bart.

The person who wrote the comment above must have applied for the
national team job and didn't get it so you will be the biggest finger
pointer of them all.

Its a small world in Salt Lake City, there are only so many people who
actually see what is happening inside of a program so it should be
easy to figure out who wrote that messege.

Happy skating

[Skate] Veldkamp: The US team will grow slow

In his column in De Telegraaf Bart Veldkamp, coach of US Speedskating-team,
writes Chad Hedrick trained more in the Summerseason than last year. But he
don't expect too much from the US team because there wasn't a real system
since the departure of Bart Schouten in April 2006. Riders trained
seperately, Derek Parra tried to bring a system last Winter, but 'it's a
hopeless case to bring a good team in the Winter after a bad preparation in
the Summer. 'The basis of a good Winter had to be made in the Summer, the
most important period for a speedskater. In the Winter you have to race and
than there isn't time for good training anymore. The team is in a little
better shape than before, but we know our target isn't the coming Winter. My
team needs more years to come back at the top. It takes months, years of
training to get the power you need. I believe in it. The team will grow
slow."

... but this discussion is so to speak completely
independent of the Shani Davis case, who trains
fully separately, right?

Otherwise I'd assume that a man like Chad Hedrick
ought to be able to make important decisions
about training by himself, and that his level
of success (for 2008, or for 2009, or for 2010)
depends even more on his own "fire in the belly"
than on what his trainer might tell him. But
I welcome other or supplementary views.

What about the ladies, are they also under Bart`s command? I believe Raney did very well during American Cup
last weekend, but she`s maybe one of them - through age and experience - who had their own "fire in the belly"?

He didn't emerge as a White Power until the 1980's I think, and he wasn't a 'celebrity' until
the 1990's. In the mean time I guess he pursued his career as a lawyer. In post-war times (at
least) views that resembled those of the Nazis would not be compatible with that. His war
against the 'non-whites' seems to start after his retirement.

Kjuus used to work in the ministry of local affairs
(kommunaldepartementet) in the early 1990'ies. At the same time he
started getting into right-wing politics. I remember vaguely that this
caused a stir. However, as he was about to retire, nobody saw any point
in taking the trouble with having him discharged. I remember seeing him
once (could have been in '91 or '92) at the end of the working day. My
impression was that of a wretched and miserable son of a b....

As to his political views I would not say that these were typical "white
power", which is closely associated with a racist faction of the
skinhead subculture, but rather the confused babble from a very
insignificant group of persons (his "party" got 463 votes at the 1997
election and has later sunk without leaving any tracks) which it was
very hard to take seriously. I could give a few examples from the
party-programme, which has been widely spread in Norwegian legal circles
thanks to the 1997-Supreme Court verdict dealing with his party. But as
I, and supposedly also the listmembers, have better things to do, I
won't.

[Skate] The first skating movie: 1902

Skating in Central Park/NY in 1902:

http://memory.loc.gov/mbrs/lcmp002/m2a37849.mpg (wmp)
http://memory.loc.gov/mbrs/lcmp002/m2a37849.mov (quick time)

United States : American Mutoscope and Biograph Company, 1902.
SUMMARY
The view is of a frozen lake in Central Park crowded with ice skaters. The film is of such poor quality that it
is difficult to tell if the apparent "snow" is real or just scratches on the film.
