Re: [Skate] Re: Regular "trophy" competitions - Trofeo Alberto Nicolodi 1960 - 2006

Many nice "remembering" names on this list, and also a lot of "sub top level" names and some results who make
one wondering how hard the competition realy was. Jappie van Dijk, for instance, and his victory in -71
with 69,06(f) and 205,600!!! Also Boucher with tvo fall victories, in -77 with 51,95(f).
The -73 winner Wim Beukers later on representing Tønsberg Turn. Was he ever Norwegian?
And is -99 winner Judith Straathof a sister of Jeroen?
I remember -76 winner Dan Carrol well from WCh-75 and as a great talent, but when Heiden became visible he
more or less dissapeared, didn`t he?

Reasonably good results from this North Korean skater, 39.96 on the
500m and this. Do these times get her anywhere near the World Distance
Championships?
It's a pitty we don't see North Korean skaters more often in
international competition!

Marcel.

[Skate] Japanese skating (was asian winter games final day)

Japan was for years the number one skating nation in Asia. It appears
this situation has altered quite rapidly. Its allrounders have been
mediocre at best over the last few years and the sprinters are not
doing that brilliant anymore.

Any ideas about the causes of this? Lack of good coaches? Not enough
innovation? Lack of talent?

Judith is a cousin, if I'm not mistaken.

Whatever, Northkoreans definitely don't go to the US for a sports
competition (except Olympics).

Not quite right. They'll do anything to impress their capitalist
rivals, it seems. Kang Yun Mi (who shares her name with a South Korean
short tracker) won a silver medal at the World Gymnastics
Championships in Anaheim, California three years ago.

Håkon,

who thinks the North Korean people would need some food before
considering speed skating...

Quoting me:

I believe he was, participating in Norwegian all round Championship -76(19), -77(12) and -78(19) - in the
last one representing Holmestrand og Botne.

Quoting me again:

Reading old results I discover Daniel "Dan" Carroll representing US in WCh already in 1970, so I believe his
"dissapearing" has nothing to do with Heiden at all...
