Kirk Olson nods his head when he hears this. "You're absolutely right. People who are very good skaters make it look so easy, so smooth," he said. And then he laughs. Heartily. "It's exceedingly difficult. It takes years of practice. But it's a beautiful thing to see the human form doing this sport." Olson, of Appleton, recently took part in the United States speedskating championships in Salt Lake City, which also doubled as the Olympic trials. He ended up finishing 10th overall in the men's combined 500-meter race. It was a strong performance - and Olson was pretty happy with it - but not quite good enough to make the cut for the U.S. team heading to the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy. Olson was disappointed but still, it was not bad for a guy who didn't even take up the sport until about three years ago. Not bad for a father of three who had also maintained a full-time job as a network analyst while training. Not bad at all for a guy who's just turning 39. Olson might have come to the sport of speedskating relatively late - heck, he didn't even try on a pair of speedskates until age 36 - but a combination of genes, hard work and top-notch support (his coach was four-time Olympian David Cruikshank) went a long way in helping to make up for lost time.(Continue reading)
