Speedskating clubs expect boost from Olympics
By Heather LaRoi (Gannett Wisconsin Newspapers)

The thing about speedskating is that when it's done well, it just looks
so darned easy.
Kirk Olson nods his head when he hears this. "You're absolutely right.
People who are very good skaters make it look so easy, so smooth," he
said.
And then he laughs. Heartily.
"It's exceedingly difficult. It takes years of practice. But it's a
beautiful thing to see the human form doing this sport."
Olson, of Appleton, recently took part in the United States speedskating
championships in Salt Lake City, which also doubled as the Olympic
trials.
He ended up finishing 10th overall in the men's combined 500-meter race.
It was a strong performance - and Olson was pretty happy with it - but
not quite good enough to make the cut for the U.S. team heading to the
2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy.
Olson was disappointed but still, it was not bad for a guy who didn't
even take up the sport until about three years ago. Not bad for a father
of three who had also maintained a full-time job as a network analyst
while training. Not bad at all for a guy who's just turning 39.
Olson might have come to the sport of speedskating relatively late -
heck, he didn't even try on a pair of speedskates until age 36 - but a
combination of genes, hard work and top-notch support (his coach was
four-time Olympian David Cruikshank) went a long way in helping to make
up for lost time.

This is something many suffer from when they are strongly or even
fanatically devoted to a subject - this is not particular to (some)
muslims or even religion. They also tend to blow their interest out of
proportion.

Interestingly, the Dutch have their own miniature version of this
cartoon commotion, featuring two strict Christian parties (SGP and
ChristenUnie) in an Adam and Eve cartoon regarding the non-acceptance
of women in the party by the SGP (yes, we have our own
fundamentalists here ).

It's an organ for the Danish Right, though not specifically 'Christian' in
the fundamentalist sense.

But the situation in Denmark is extreme. In a few years what used to be (or
bragged of being) Europe's most liberal society has changed into a very
unfriendly one. Attacks on Muslims have more or less turned into official
politics. Consequently Danish Muslims (unlike Norwegian Muslims, for
instance) gets more 'aggressive'.

Today a French paper publish the pictures. Incidentally, France is another
European country where the extreme Right holds political positions.

In Norway, by the way, only a month or two ago a prominent Christian leader
claimed that Norwegian 'rights of speech' and 'equal rights' policy were a
threat to religious freedom. And, unlike the Muslims, the Christians have
political power here (and support from the extreme Right) - so we might see
some limitations of our constitutional freedom here in the future...

I think it's in principle impossible for a democratic government to
apologize for something done by media. What they can do (and what the
Norwegian Government has done), is to make it clear that it's not a matter

Knut Johannesen skated a 5,000 m in 7.41 in a training race (that might have
been seen as a test race today) in Squaw Valley in 1959 or '60.

[Skate] Re: Nils Aanes 70

I've been puzzled by this 5,000 m time for almost 35 years since I
first "discovered it" in the 1971 pamphlet "NORWEGIAN ALL TIME BEST
performers and performances in SPEED-SKATING for MEN" by Magne Teigen
and Per Gunnar Harmansen..

It's rather strange that Knut Johannesen in his first book "Fra
Kampen til Squaw Valley" writes in detail about the test race of 16
February (Jan Pesman 7.46,7 and Knut Johannesen 7.53,1) while he
completely ignores a race 4 days later resulting in a time 4,3
seconds better than the world record.

Did the race ever take place (20 Feb. was the day the women skated
their Olympic 500 m)? I'll ask Knut Johannesen himself the next time
we meet at Valle Hovin.

Probably because this race did not meet the criteria for recognition as an
official race. Meaning the results were better forgotten. The liberal
attitude towards 'unofficial' results, typical to the WSSSA, was not yet
established.

Good idea. Though I know he has been asked before, and that he then
confirmed the race.

With little chance of meeting 'Kupper'n' in person, I'll be very interested
in his explanation of the reasons for not recognizing this time as a PB. Was
it a mere formality, were neutral officials absent, was the times kept by
team leaders or mates - or was there serious flaws in measurements?

(I remember at least one sensational training time in the 1980's, that
turned out to be a race with only inner curves...)

Problem is, that if 'Kupper'n' and other participants of the Olympic
test/training races have not told the complete story before, chances are
they don't remember the details 45 years later...

[Skate] Re: results hamar

Would anybody know the laptimes or "race plans" of Ervik's 3.45 or Grødum's
6.24 from Hamar last week-end?

Though I find 6.24.04 somewhat encouraging no matter how it is achieved, I
would somehow find it even more encouraging if it turned out to have been
achieved in a rather "flat" race than in a race which started with 29.0 and
ended with 32.0.

Their leaders evidently are able to stir up large groups of people in
this and other cases. But what if they learn that a democratic
government cannot be bullied into apologising for acts performed by
its subjects. Wonder what this will lead to. Especially if more
countries are publishing it.

The leaders of course will not learn anything. They are only jumping
the opportunity. They are no doubt happy with the whole situation.
Hmm, does anyone happen to know the identity of the original artist?
