I have been using Blue Marble Synthetic

The price varies, 25$ to 30$ per gallon.

RE: RE: throttle cable

I used to get pre-made cables for the Kawasaki from Aaen, but didn't think they made one for the 494. Tony
Murphy has nice cables specially made for our cars and the 494.

Eric D Christensen <edc@...> wrote: Best bet is to just order the
proper length cable from Aaen or Dennis Kirk
or whoever you deal with locally. Personally, I just replace the whole
assembly with the pre-fabricated cable and splitter assembly from Aaen.

If you're more ambitious, most motorcycle shops can provide custom length
cables with the appropriate knob on the end. Just disassemble the splitter
and replace the throttle cable with the new one of sufficient length. Take
the cable that you pull out with you to the shop so they can put the right
sized knob on the end for you.

Words of wisdom.... Having an extra 12" of length on your throttle cable
doesn't hurt, but being 1/8" short will ruin your day.

Re: RE: need wiring help

As others have responded, Tony Murphy is a great resource for tech info and parts. You mentioned that your
494 is from a 1999 sled. Hope it doesn't have RAVE valves in the cylinders, which would make it illegal for F500.

RE: RE: need carb help

Before you buy a rebuild kit, check to make sure that the clip is attached to the needle on your #1 carb, and
make sure the needle is properly moving with the slide.

I had the exact same problem, and the cause was the clip falling off the needle and the needle falling down
into the needle jet.

Re: 2 stroke oil

Bill,

Why would you want to use something cheep ? The oil you use is the only
thing standing between your pistons and cylinders. Cheep might turn to
expensive when the moving part meets the stationary part.

I used Red Line 2 cycle Race oil from day one, never had a scoring or lower
end lube problem. It is available in quart or gallon size containers.
Pegasus has it at $44.00 per gallon. 1-800-688-6946

Re: 2 stroke oil

I was talking about the cheapest source for Red Line 2 cycle oil. $44
for a gallon is $11 a quart, not exactly what I would call cheap! There
is a Tech 2000 2 stroke oil (non-synthetic) at Wallly World and it is
$7 a gallon. That is what I would call cheap. But, no, I wont use that
in anything but a weed eater.

Re: 2 stroke oil

Funny thing about the Tech 2000 - my 1997 Polaris Ultra Touring (3 cylinder,
679cc) ran for over 20,000 miles using various 2 stroke oils, non synthetic
(on the long trips to Canada it was impossible to carry enough from the start
of a trip) - but the primary oil I used was the Tech 2000 - many varied
problem with the sled over the years but never with the engine. My son had the
higher performance Ultra SP XE (same motor but with triple pipes) - same story.
My ATV is a 2 stroke and lives just fine on Tech 2000

As I understand it (and the depth of my understanding wouldn't get your feet
wet !) - - regular 2 stroke oil actually will combust while the synthetic
does not - just provides lubrication------------also smells different -
following Quadrini when he was using synthetic in his sled, I had to drop back from
normal following distance to give the "stink" some time to dissipate before I
ran through it

But - I do use Red Line in the F500 for autocross - usually using 1/2 pint
per event - if I were interested in saving money I wouldn't own a race car
!!!!!!!
