RE: steering geometry?

I have 7' wide wheels with 5" inners & 2" outers. If you can machine
adaptors they would be easy to adapt.

Thanks ... Jay Novak

Bill ,
I have the same issue with my car (84' Zink 19). I would like to go to
the wider rear wheels on the front but due to the front A-arms I can't.
I'm not really interested in rebuilding the entire front suspension
just
to test this additional foot print idea. I've been running with the 6.5
fronts
since we got the car and have been very sucessful. In therory the idea
sounds good but, not worth the work or expense for my limited
schedule.
If you come up with some rims that can accept the offset please let
me know. I would be willing to try that approach.

Good Luck, Bryan

RE: steering geometry?

Wow, even one 7 foot wide wheel won't meet the 55" rule!
Seriously tho, what kind of adapters are you talking about? TIA

Re: steering geometry?

Bill,
I had a similar situation with my KBS Mk7. Adjusting the rod ends on
the A-arms almost did the trick, but I still needed to get front wheels
with more backspacing. I bought Kodiak wheels. They can make them in 1/2
inch backspacing increments. Unless things have changed, getting your
wheels may take awhile though.
Good luck.

RE: steering geometry?

Well, I think the legal max is 8.5", so either 8" or 8.5" would be what
I need.

Last weekend I was showing my 88 Red Devil to one of the suspension guru
guys in our local autocross group. This guy was autocrossing before
there was a Solo 2 Nats. I was asking him about how to go about building
some new front A-arms that would be shorter to allow using the wide
wheels on the from of the car and still pass the maximum width rules. He
and his friend said "Dont build new ones, get some wider wheels that
have lots of backspacing, like the front drive cars have, and your car
will handle 10 times better than the short A-arm set-up." These 2 guys
are very sharp and are not in F-mod, so there would be no reason for
them to lie to me. Any comments/feedback on this would be greatly
appreciated. My stock spun aluminum wheels wont work on the front of the
car, because the dont have the back-spacing that would be needed. TIA

Re: steering geometry?

Bill - You could check with Micro-Belmont in Grand Rapids, MI. They used to
make two piece rims in both 10" and 13" diameters. They could do just about
any width/offset you could think of.

Instead of the wider wheels why doesn't someone do the "ELF TYRELL" six
wheeler approach? Loads of front end "bite" and I suspect not a lot of weight
gain. Just a thought : )

RE: steering geometry?

Won't happen on a Z19 without some serious reconstruction. I just went as wide as possible on the backspace
(wider rear wheel half). It worked just fine at 6.5-7.5" (I just can't remember anymore--Todd
Beddick-are you around?). That was actually the best turning F5 I have yet driven. They can work quite well
without the full width wheels.

Re: steering geometry?

There is no mention in the GCR of maximum wheel width. However, there is a
maximum "design" tread width that governs (but, does not stipulate) the tire
width and the rim width in turn. I tried 7" (2" out x 5" in) Keizers on the
front of my Mk7 with no front suspension alterations. Interference on the
trailing link would have seen the wheel bead sawing the link in two (unless
of course, I never drove in the pits where sharp turns are required). I'm
not sure 2 x 4.5 would have worked either.

Good memory Jim. The front wheels are 7" wide with 5" backspacing.
