Re: brakes/sizes

You guys are all talking Greek to me, what is a balance bar and do I
have one?
Bill Schmidt 88 Red Devil F440 (new to chainsaws)

I'm using a 1 1/8 cylinder rear with a wilwood dynalite 4 piston
caliper. On
the front is 13/16 cylinder with dynalite single calipers. Plenty of
range
on the balance bar.
The car had 3/4 and 5/8 cylinders when I got it. I wanted a firmer
pedal so
I went bigger.
Other things to check are binding of the balance bar, clevis adjustment,
and
length of the push rods.
Herb Noble.

Re: brakes/sizes

A balance bar connects the brake pedal to the two master cylinders. By
adjusting the bar position, you can alter the brake bias front to rear.

RE: brakes/sizes

Balance Bar?

I thought it was what you did in a crowded when you had 6 beers in your hand
and the only way back to your friends was to walk across the bar. Think
Carlos 'n Charlies in Cozumel.....

The balance bar is attached to a cable that runs to your cockpit. You turn
the knob in the cockpit and it turns the balance bar in either direction.
Most places that sell race parts sell the cable and knob. If you install
one, pull the cable out of the sleeve and lube it with lightweight marine
grease to keep the brass/bronze cable from corroding.

Re: brakes/sizes

I used to have a 1989 Red Devil and it did not have a
remote cable adjuster to adjust the brake balance. Just a
piece of threaded rod with jam nuts on either side of rod
ends on the master cylinder piston rods. Why would anyone
need to adjust the brake balance anyway? :)

Re: brakes/sizes

I usually set mine to 100% rear, then jab the brakes going into the turns.
It allows you to slide through them. I think thats the method J Dick used
to win the runoff's last year.

Interesting technique. There is a spec go-kart class (RotaxMax) that allows
only a rear brake. This forces you to use the aforementioned technique.

Sounds like a have a new plan for my next test day....

(no subject)

Just pulling the F5 out of mothballs for the July race at Blackhawk and I
have a question on jetting for the Rotax 494. Last July, with 100 octane
track fuel & 360 jets, my temps went 1300 F and cut the motor. Fortunately
I was using Amsoil injector oil and the motor was none the worse for wear.
On a suggestion from a former kart racer I jumped to 110 octane. The next
day with the same 360 jets, and a wet-to-dry track, I got low 1100's for
exhaust temps. Other stuff to consider: The expansion chamber is an Aaens
and the probes are set in the Y-pipe the required distance from the pistons
as described by Digitron.

Am I missing an adjustment on the carb? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: brakes/sizes

If you ever started a race in dry (or even damp) conditions and encounter
rain during the race, you will have your answer.

There is nothing more exhilarating that bopping down a 3000'+ straightaway
at full throttle in the rain, dodging puddles and runway lights, and wearing
dry tires. The spins can cause a moist warmness in your midquarters.
