Pipe/manifold fitment question...

This is probably a stupid question, but....

I just received my replacement Aaen pipe and it won't fit down over the manifold pipe on my Rotax 494. It
appears that they are exactly the same size. Is this normal, or do I have the wrong manifold? If this is
normal, do you have to heat the pipe to get it to 'slip' on, or do I need to shrink the manifold pipe?

The pipe it's replacing fit excessively loosely - it has a ton of slop - and appears to have been stretched to
the point that it weakened the metal. It is actually torn in a couple of spots.

Thanks in advance,

Greening offroading pics

I just posted a few pics of Darrell Greening at the INR National at
Gingerman filling his car with salad and sand. I think they are worth a
look! ;-)

RE: Pipe/manifold fitment question...

Pipes start out very tight. I used one of those exhaust pipe expander tools
from Pep Boy or any other auto part store to spread it enough to get on.
With the vibration of the Rotax in use, the pipes will loosen up, eventually
to the condition of your old pipe. I wish Aaen built their pipes so the
would last. Some of the mods that people apply to the pipe in a effort to
keep them alive....an exterior 'brace' welded along the curved portion of
the pipe.....also a gusset welded to the interior portion of the curve.
Most Aaen pipe fracture somewhere around the curved portion of the pipe. If
you look at most anyone pipe, you will find various welds and patches in the
area of the curve.

Daytona Classic?

The annual Daytona Classic presented by Central Florida Region was held May
1 & 2, and as is usual it was combined with the Southeast Division's ECR
Enduro series so the registration lines and paddock were filled IT drivers
out the ying yang. No matter who you talked to there were war stories
concerning the capriciousness of Registration and people waiting in lines
for more than an hour, only to be told that registration has closed and to
come back tomorrow. How to win friends and influence people!

On track, the schedule was the normal...give all available time to the IT's
and their 90 minute Enduros. The F500's, combined with Formula Fords and
Vee's presented a field 24 strong, 12 F500's, and 6 each for the other
classes. The Saturday qualifying session, which concluded prior to the
lunch break, showed Neal Spieler at the top of the F500 heap with a 2:11 and
change with most everyone else dissatisfied with their performance account
various mechanical gremlins. As a 'reward' for only having one qualifying
session on Saturday the F500 field got the privilege of being the first
group on the damp track Sunday morning, after the thundershowers from
Saturday afternoon and night. Numerous competitors improved their times,
despite the damp conditions, however no one was able to better Neal's time
which netted him the outside pole in the combined field.

It is difficult to describe a race in which you participate, but are not at
the pointed end of the action. The action for me was several spirited laps
with Terry Boylan and his Zink Z19 as we diced far from the lead. Central
Florida Region would not provide printed results so the results are from
memory and incomplete.

1st Neal Spieler
2nd Jason Somers
3rd Wesley Wilfong

RE: Pipe/manifold fitment question...

Mine was the same way.

Put a little lubricating oil on it and twist it back and forth. It will
slide down. It doesn't hurt to remove the small amount of rust on both with
some emery paper.

RE: Daytona Classic?

I can only comment on the 5-9th positions, as I held all of those during
this race. It was an extremely fun race for that coveted (don't have to
wait in tech) 5th position. Bob Berman, Jim Elder, Curtis Neiswinder,
Jeff Moench, Bosco, Clint McMahon, Tom Stevens and yours truly had a
fantastic battle. Close, clean, wheel to wheel action. Drafting with
Fords and each other, it was a good time. Racing with your friends is
what it is all about.

See you all at the Sprints!

Damn man. Isn't that carrying the "hit the curbs" trend just a little far?
