Car Size

Hi All,

I've been lurking for awhile and finally have a question for you. I'm thinking
about an F500/440 for autocross, solo 1, and hillclimbs next year so today I
went to F440 in Canada to drive a car. Unfortunately I wasn't able to drive
one, but I did get to sit in one. They have KBS Mark V's.

I have fairly wide shoulders and I've got a VERY tight fit at the shoulder
area. I don't think I could drive for very long with that much pressure
combined with g's and vibration. So my question. Are any of the other makes
wider in the shoulder area? I'm going to go back up to drive one, but I'm
hoping some other cars are wider.

Re: Car Size

Some of the cars like the Novakar are very roomy compared to some of the
other makes. I would think that you could probably "bend" the bars that
pass by your shoulders to give you a bit more room.

That said however, not knowing how tall or wide you are I cannot speak for
how you "should" fit in the car based on your expectations v. reality. I
have fairly wide shoulders too and I actually added a little additional
padding (about 1/2" thick on each side) to the bars on my Red Devil up by
my shoulders to make sure that I WOULD NOT MOVE in the car. I also wear
kneepads and elbow pads and those items along with the poured seat absorb
almost all the bumps that our cars are "supposed" to force us to endure and
I must say that I have only gotten out of the car one time feeling that I
had been beaten up and that was more because the car was an understeering
and ill-handling pig that day and scared the crap out of me everytime I
went through the oval at Phoenix.

Of course everyone needs to find their own "comfort" zone in a car but with
the cars in our class being as "twitchy" as they can be when you are
balancing the car around a corner with your feet dancing simultaneously on
the brake and throttle I feel that the tighter the fit and the more laid
down the position the better you can feel what the car is doing. I don't
know if you are like most of us and have come from a sports car background
but a formula car is worn. I feel like I am sliding all over the place any
time I get in a sports car or sportsracer even with the seat belts snugged
down as much as I can.

The tight cocoon feel of my F500/F440 is very welcome. I rented a KBS Mk7
from Chico last year and without having a pored seat in that car I felt
like I was moving around way too much too. I guess you will just have to
decide if the car is too tight (probably bad) or too snug (probably

RE: Car Size

KBS chassis are all a snug fit. When I got my KBS 7 back in 1995 the middle
age spread had not set in and my shoulders had plenty of room, below the
horizontal bars at the shoulder. Last year with MAS I had to have the bars
tying the main roll hoop and the front roll hoop together replaced at a
different angle to permit me to get my forearms into the driving equation.

F500 cockpits can seem claustrophobic until you actually get in and DRIVE
the cars. Once you get to actually driving the cars you will assume a
position that works for you. Until you drive it you can only imagine what's
going to happen.

Rave 494....

A question - what engines exactly are legal to run? Is a RAVE engine with
non-rave liners legal? A RAVE engine with the ports blocked? Are RAVE
cylinders illegal regardless of what else has been done to make them non-RAVE?

TIA,

Re: Rave 494....

The only "legal" engines are the non-rave. Some people block off the rave
ports, but if you get torn down at a national, the motor is illegal. I
doubt anyone would care at a regional, but its still illegal. I guess if
you swap the cylinders and noone knew, thats a "legal" motor. Everything
else is the same on the 2 motors.

Mid Ohio News?

Results anyone?

Cory McLeod | 2 Sep 2003 16:51

RE: Car Size

Bill,

The KBS cockpits are some of the smallest in the class and I think the Mk5
is the smallest of the small. Other makes (Red Devil, Novakar, Sidewinder)
have larger cockpits.

Re: Car Size

The Dalai Lama said read it to see if it works for you. Very

interesting.

Just 4 questions and the answers will surprise you. Do not cheat by

looking up the answers.

The mind is like a parachute, it works best when it is opened. This is

fun to do, but you have to follow

the instructions very closely.

Do not cheat.

MAKE A WISH BEFORE BEGINNING THE TEST!!

A Warning! Answer the questions as you go along. There are only four

questions and if you see them

all before finishing, you will not have honest results. Go down slowly

and

do each exercise as you scroll

down.
