Listserver maintenace complete

Planned maintenance work is complete on the F500 mailing list server.
Everything appears to be working just fine. We now have an additional
layer of very high tech spam filtering and virus protection for messages
posted through the list.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled program....

RE: Re: Car questions

Eric -

How can you forget the Chaparral that founded the class....a far as I know,
no engine that has ever been legalized for the class has been 'delisted'. I
doubt that anyone is still running a Chaparral, but it was the motor in my
first car...reed valves and all.

The engine are not sealed, but they are tightly restricted. There are
only 3 approved engines, and they are very specific models. There is a
fourth engine being tested, but it is not yet approved. Basically you
have to run them box stock with no modification and using only original
manufacturer supplied components (no after market parts). Porting,
polishing, balancing etc. are prohibited to keep costs down.

The spec are very specific in some areas, but very open in others. There
is a lot of room for innovation and tinkering, which is why you will see
so much variation in the outward appearance and design of the various
chassis.

Carroll Smith

The news of Carroll Smith's passing saddens me greatly. Carroll was
truly one of the great figures of motorsports. His contribution to the
sport has had far more impact and influence than Carroll himself would
ever admit to.

Though I only had the privilege to meet them man on one occasion, I
thought of him as a mentor. Like most of us, I learned most what I know
about the art and science of car preparation, set-up and fabrication
from his books. I constantly tell new drivers that the FIRST thing they
need to do is read "Prepare To Win", "Tune To Win" and "Drive To Win".
Then you can get yourself a car and start learning to race.

Thank you Carroll, for all that you did for the sport and for all the
knowledge and experience you so generously shared with us weekend
warriors.

I didn't forget it Chuck... I just opted not in include it as it
unlikely a new driver will ever see one. Heck... I've only seen one once
myself!

There's enough confusing stuff that a newbie has to figure out...

Ignition Wiring Question

A few weeks ago this information was posted concerning Rotax ignition
wiring:

"The 2 yellow wires on the Rotax are for the charging system. The generate
an
AC current which plugs into the voltage regulator. The black wire with the
white stripe is for the kill switch, you ground this to shut the engine off.
It can also be used to drive your tach..............it puts out
approximately
65 volts a/c.This is a problem if you are using a mychron 3 automotive
instrument. It has a high and a low voltage signal wire. Low is for 0 to 20
volts and high is for 100 volts an up....................... The brown wire
is for ground, this is important if your engine is mounted in rubber. I do
not have a wiring diagram to send, this should be helpful."

Looking at my system, there are only 3 free wires, 2 yellow and the black
w/white stripe...no brown wire. I just happened to look at the 494 parts
breakout manual and it also only shows 3 wires in the diagram of the
ignition system. Did the previous owner clip a wire or is my system some
factory variant?

Also, I would like to purchase a spare coil and CDI box I am having a hard
time finding somebody who recognizes the Nippondenso number. Are the Nippo
parts available or do I need to order aftermarket parts? If I need to order
aftermarket, what are the part numbers.

Thanks

Scott

RE: Ignition Wiring Question

Scotty,

There is only 3 wires coming off the back of the motor. 2 yellow wires for the lighting coil and the bk/wh wire
for the kill.

kill switch: wire it so you ground the bk/wh wire when you want to kill the motor

lighting coil: Tape em up out of the way if you aren't going to use it for anything. Anybody I know that was
using the yellow wires for a tach input eventually fried their gauge. I personally use it to run my rain
light so I don't need a battery. A generic 2-wire voltage regulator is needed for that. One of the yellow
wires (either one) get's spliced with the ground wire of the regulator then goes to ground. The other
yellow wire get's spliced into the power wire for the regulator. That power wire also supplies voltage to
whatever you're trying to power up.

I know Tweety Bird (Phil Green) uses a 3 or 4 wire regulator to charge his battery. I'm sure he'll chime in if
you need the wiring.

Polished my own wheels last night....look out Brothers!

The ROTAXPARTSCENTER stocks the legal CDI box and coil for the Type 494. The
E-box is identified by the number 070000-2421 and the coil by part number
866601 and a second number 129700-3290. We have them in stock as well as all
the other parts for the Type 494 and the new Type 493 engines.

Re: Carroll Smith

I was fortunate last year to spend a lot of time with Carroll Smith, at
the Solo 2 Nationals. We talked about the autocross cars, Formula 1 as
it is today, and a variety of other offshoots. He was also very
intrigued with creativity of the SAE formula cars. It truly made my week
(quite a thing considering all that transpired). Thanks again to Tom
Rickel (Hoosier Midwest dealer) for encouraging Carroll to come. I cut
my teeth on "Tune to Win" back in the 80's and so I also have a ton of
respect for what this man did for me and countless others.

It was great to see Carroll interested and still curious after so many
years in motorsports. Here was a guy that had been everywhere and done
everything in motorsports and he spent a week with a bunch of parking
lot racers. I was fortunate to have stuck around and spent time with
him. Sad to see him go.

Carroll told me that he was working on a new version of "Tune to Win". I
guess that was something left unfinished. Great people always leave a
little something unfinished. For great people there's always something
more to be done.

RE: Ignition Wiring Question

I have put in my regulator, but have not tried it out yet. The two yellow
wires connect, a ground, and a wire to the battery......

I use a clamp type sensor for the tach that clamps around the spark plug
wire. Seems to work good.
