Tires

Hi,
I don't race a F500 but do race a somewhat similar vehicle. We race truck
bodied 800 pound carts with no suspension. Wheel base is 52" and length is
75". We are currently running on trailer tires which we cut the tread off
to flatten them out 18.5 x 8.5 x 8" We are looking to get away from these
tires and go to slicks and I hoping to get some info about what tires you
all use. We will have to go to a 10" wheel. We run 500cc fan cooled
snowmobile engines on a 1/4 mile almost flat oval track. I see on the
Hoosier web site they have what they call Little Car asphalt tires, any
experience with these? Thanks in advance for any help.

John

Chop???

I'm trying to slowly redo my 85 Red Devil, it apparently has the legal hoops,
but that appears to be the newest mod to the car. Am I doing the right thing
trying to update an old car myself, or can I buy a newer chassis that I can
use these uprights, rims, brakes, etc. on as spares?? I currently race nascar
ministocks, and this car was acquired because my dream is running Limerock in
the SCCA. My level of skill on working on this thing is excellent, but when I
look at the chapparal motor, the ancient suspension, well, it doesn't seem
like it will be that competitive unless I'm in a lawn tractor race. Is it
possible to "clip" the car (new front or rear frames to update) or is there a
better way?? Someone has to have faced this before. Are any cars available in
kit form, or as bare as possible so I don't have to get a complete new
roller?? Thanks for any input!

RE: Chop???

Jeff,

I would suggest contacting Don Hanley (406-723-3556) to discuss your
dilemma. He may be able to offer some insight that will help. Many
advances have been made on the cars since 85 including aerodynamics. If you
are handy with your MIG, you may be able to incorporate updated shocks and
develop a new suspension design that works better with Don's help.

Unfortunately, no matter what you do to the suspension, the Chaparral will
never be competitive with the Rotax. Sorry .... I don't envision that many
spares form the 85 could be used on a newer chassis.

Really depends on what you want to do. You can get into a competitive Rotax
car somewhere in the $8000 - $10,000 range. How much would you spend
putting a Rotax in the 85??

Just some food for thought...

Frankly Jeff, and 85 chassis is so old, and so far off the technology curve
of the class that you would probably be ahead of the game selling it to
someone who wants to autocross it and buying a newer chassis. The older
short wheelbase cars are still very popular with the autocross crowd.

The Rotax conversion alone will probably cost you $3000 plus by the time you
buy the engine, carbs, pipe, new clutches, etc. Considering the age of the
car, you'll probably have to replace the seat belts, and very possibly the
fuel cell and fire system.

Then you're still left with an old short wheelbase chassis with no real
suspension. Considering that you can pick up a good regional car for
$6000-$7000, or a nationally competitive car for $8000-$10000, there's
little point in trying to upgrade a dinosaur.

KBS Mk-V and Red Devil T-2x chassis can be had at a very reasonable price,
and are still quite competitive. The KBS in particular is still the dominant
chassis in the class, despite it's age. Mike just built a car that was ahead
of it's time.....

If you're into doing fabrication, you might be able to find a Red Devil T-22
or T-23 for a song. These chassis have a reputation for becoming brittle

Welcome !

Hey Rick, Welcome to the F500 forum! Nice talking with you last night at the
club! Looking forward to seeing what you have done to your car! It is going
to be a awesome year, and sounds like there will be plenty of competition!
Hope to see you with the rest of us rookies at the front of the pack!

Have you made up your mind on the SCCA school at Waterford?
Well got to go, getting ready to head down to Kenny Prices to go through the
car! Wish me luck!

SEE YAH!

Jerry
