Dear Alain, dear all,

A few comments on the tools and the roadmap workflow.

I understand your concerns about the tools. Nevertheless let allow me 2
considerations:

- the goal of the new site is not to double the S2S² one but to replace
it for what concern the roadmap part, the news from the community and
the summer school part. The S2S² will be pruned to a minimal
institutional site with the presentation of the project, the
consortium, the advisory board, etc... Of course, www.s2s2.org will
link to www.sounandmusiccomputing.org (where it is clearly stated that
the roadmap is coming from the S2S² project) and provide up-to-date

Dear Giovanni,
Thank you for all the communication from your s2s2 project. We observe it
with a great interest.

I have a kind request to you. There is being organized an invited
session at
the ASA-ASJ Joint Meeting, Hawaii in December this year. The title of this
session is: Music Information and Communication
I am coorganizer of this session along with the counterpart from Japan, Dr.
Masuzo Yanagida.
I wonder if you or anyone from your consortium plan to attend this event,
because it could a very good opportunity to show your research to American
and Japanese audience.
If you remember the conference in Kassel, the very international event
was a
real success. I think that on a smaller scale we still can achieve such an
event in ASA conference.

The deadline for receipt of abstracts is Friday, 30 June.

Re: two annotated entries in biblio.s2s2.org

Dear Davide,

thank you very much for the reading and the *very* interesting
annotations. I'd like to add a couple of comments to your annotations.

If you look at the last EC Science and Research Commissioner Janez
Potocnik's address speech[0] to the commission aimed at not reducing
funding for the European Research Council (ERC), you will certainly
notice that Potocnik makes a sharp distinction between 'basic research'
and 'frontier research'. Quoting (almost) directly his speech:

'[T]he ERC should not simply be understood as a funding mechanism for
'basic research' in the traditional sense of the term,' said Mr
Potocnik. The Commissioner uses the term 'frontier research' rather
than 'basic research', to make a clear distinction for the ERC's
role, and to give the ERC a '21st century connotation', as opposed to
one 'captive to the dynamics of research in the mid-20th century'.

Sorry if I'm being naïve, but I am not sure what this difference really
means in practical terms, and whether it is a general EC position tha
extends beyond the role of the ERC itself. Any comment is welcome on
this. Indeed, the article you comment on is an interesting and important
point of view. The "fight against communism" has indeed leveraged the
essential foundations of what Castells call the "informational era".
Among these foundations, internet is certainly a core item, but I
maintain that avant-garde art is indeed another important element. Does
the paper you comment imply that society needs "figthing targets" in
order progress at a brisk pace? If that was the case, we should probably
focus on the next "fighting targets" in order to understand what could
be the next driving force for research (with all its corollaries).

Summer school on The making and playing of musical instruments

Texte du mail:
Dear colleague,

An international summer school on The making and playing of musical instruments will be held in Udine in the north of Italy from 17th to 21st July 2006. The course is aimed at students and researchers in the field of music and musical acoustics as well as players and makers who wish to acquire a more thorough understanding of this subject matter.  The course will involve descriptions of the acoustical and mechanical action of the major families of western musical instruments. More importantly, it will investigate how the playing and tonal qualities of instruments can be manipulated by the maker or musician.

The course will be presented by a team of internationally-renowned musical acousticians and involve both theoretical and practical instruction. For further details, please see the following web sites:

We look forward to seeing you in Udine this summer,
Bernard Richardson, Xavier Boutillon, Anders Askenfelt, Murray Campbell, Benoit Fabre, and Joel Gilbert.

connexions presentation in video.google

Perhaps some of you remember that in our project meeting in Helsinki,
about 16 months, ago I would have liked to give a presentation-demo
about http://cnx.org , but unfortunately there was no time.

Well, Richard Baraniuk has recently given a presentation at google
that is much better than what I could ever do. You might want to see
it at
http://video.google.com/videoplay?
docid=6852287090518403675&q=baraniuk&pl=true

Now that we are working on contexts for s2s2, what I find interesting
is how sound and music are widely present in the contents of
connexions, and how Baraniuk is using an analogy from the music
industry and practices (create, rip, mix, burn) to base his
presentation and view of connexions. More precisely, he says

"What is it so special about music that allows anyone in the world to
create [...] their own music [...] The create, rip, mix, burn
culture. [...] Why doesn't the same thing happen with books?"

So, this seems another case of music driving technology and society,
that might be worth mentioning in some of our contexts.

ciao
