what life will be like in 2008

In a recent DebianPlanet feed I found this link which is pretty
interesting, at least from the perspective of someone who has
coordinated and participated to an SMC roadmapping effort:

http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2008/03/24/what-will-life-be-like-in-the-year-2008/

I find two things very interesting: in this article, physical speed is
still a relevant feature - transmission speed is still not a relevant
feature (though it is implicit in some parts of the text); and, computer
networks are barely present, but networks (telephone and TV) are still
considered very relevant. All in all, and doomed cities aside, I find
the vision pretty accurate (doomed cities might well be a metaphor for
ozone and smog pollution problems). The vision fails instead on social
grounds - and this is the lesson to learn (also for the SMC roadmap).

[Fwd:call for papers CMMR2008, Copenhagen, May 19th-23rd, 2008]

Call for Papers
5th International Symposium on Computer Music Modeling and Retrieval
CMMR 2008 - Genesis of Meaning in Sound and Music
Copenhagen, Denmark, May 19th-23rd, 2008

BACKGROUND

The field of computer music is interdisciplinary by nature and closely related to a number of areas in computer science and engineering. The first CMMR gatherings mainly focused on information retrieval, programming, digital libraries, hypermedia, artificial intelligence, acoustics and signal processing.

In 2005 CMMR started moving towards a more interdisciplinary view of the field by putting increased emphasis on the investigation of the role of human interaction at all levels of musical practice.

CMMR 2007 focused on the Sense of Sounds from the synthesis and retrieval point of view and encouraged studies that linked sound modeling by analysis-synthesis to perception and cognition.

CMMR 2008 seeks to enlarge upon the Sense of Sounds-concept by taking into account the musical structure as a whole. More precisely, the workshop will have as its theme The Genesis of Meaning in Sound and Music. The purpose is hereby to establish rigorous research alliances between computer and engineering sciences (information retrieval, programming, acoustics, signal processingŠ) and areas within the humanities (in particular perception, cognition, musicology, philosophyŠ) as well as to globally address the notion of sound meaning and its implications in music, modelling and retrieval. As a step in this direction, NTSMB, the Network for Cross-Disciplinary Studies of Music and Meaning and JMM: The Journal of Music and Meaning will be joining as participants in CMMR 2008.

CMMR 2008 invites researchers, educators, composers, performers, and others with an interest in important aspects of computer music (including modeling, retrieval, analysis, and synthesis) to come join us for a unique event.

CMMR 2008 is organised by Re:New - Digital Arts Forum which organises a concurrent festival under the theme Genesis of Meaning in Digital Art.

An award for the best paper dealing with the theme of the conference - Genesis of Meaning in Sound and Music - will be under the auspices of The journal of music and meaning (http://www.musicandmeaning.net).

All papers will be reviewed by the program committee and publication of accepted papers after the symposium as a post-event proceedings in the Springer Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) is planned.

Re:New 2008 encourages submissions relating to artistic work as there will also be possibilities of presenting art-works during the conference week. This includes music, cross-modal performances, installations, and other forms, and art-work submissions are made using a separate submission form.

The 2nd EyesWeb Week

InfoMus Lab - Casa Paganini, University of Genova
Piazza Santa Maria in Passione 34, 16123 Genova, Italy

11 - 15 February 2008

Following the 1st EyesWeb Week, held in February 2006, InfoMus Lab is
pleased to announce the 2nd EyesWeb Week, a tutorial aiming at sharing with
participants the experience of InfoMus Lab - Casa Paganini in scientific and
technological developments as well as in artistic production matured around
the EyesWeb project. The EyesWeb project focuses on different aspects of
non-verbal multimodal communication, including human full-body movement and
musical gesture, and aims at understanding the affective and expressive
content gesture conveys. The research project is centered around the EyesWeb
XMI open hardware and software platform, for developing real-time multimedia
applications characterized by multimodal interaction. Research and
development in the EyesWeb project are partially supported by several EU
IST-ICT and national
projects.
This one-week tutorial aims at providing scientists, technicians, and
artists with the opportunity to master and explore in detail the EyesWeb
project and open platform. Lectures and experiments are structured in
different tracks: a track is specifically designed for dancers,
choreographers, musicians, and content creators. A parallel track concerns
the internals and core architecture of the new EyesWeb XMI platform and
related libraries for multimodal analysis, and it is focused for computer
engineers and professionals. Participants will be introduced to the
different aspects of the EyesWeb project, from design to implementation of
experience-centric mediated interactive systems to software and system
engineering issues.
Previous artistic works participated and co-designed by InfoMus Lab (see

Introducing a new book

Dear Colleague,

Those who synthesize sound sometimes ignore the fact that a listener always experiences sound as existing in space. And the properties of natural, built, and synthesized spaces influence the experience of sound, which I call aural architecture.

MIT Press has recently published Spaces Speak, Are You Listening? Experiencing Aural Architecture. The aural experience of space is central to all sounds because they and the listener always exist in a space. Spaces Speak establishes the language of aural architecture and applies the principles to examples from many cultures and centuries. Aural architecture influences the social, artistic, psychological, behavioral, and cultural experiences of the inhabitants of a space.

Information about the concepts of aural architecture is available at: www.SpacesSpeak.comThis site contains reviews, articles, discussions, podcasts, and chapters from the book.

Feel free to pass this information to those friends and colleagues who might also be interested.

Regards,
Barry Blesser (former MIT Prof)

p.s. I apologize if you have already received an announcement about the book.

                       SPECIAL TRACK ON
                   "AI for Expressive Media"

http://aiia.info.uniroma2.it/ST_ExpressiveMedia.html

Description

AI techniques are now widespread in novel communication forms,
especially in those that aim at shaping audience/user's emotions through
expressive contents, e.g. behavior models of acting virtual characters,
engines for game programming, planning formalisms in interactive
storytelling, learning techniques for music composition and performance.
There are many forums that address such topics from specialized
perspectives, since the several communication forms have well
established traditions and practices; it also happens that applicative
papers of this kind appear in general AI events. However, the latter
requires an abstraction process that is not immediate, given the
modeling difficulties and the huge implementative work that is involved
in such applications. Moreover, it is sometimes difficult for organizers
to invent coherent sessions where to host such presentations.
The goal of this special track is threefold: to provide a definition of
the expressive media in extensional terms (through reworked examples of
applications), to improve the general awareness of the AI techniques
that are mostly employed (together with revealing new interesting
problems to be modeled), to stimulate the sharing of AI approaches among
researchers in different communication forms, usually sparsed in
different events or sessions. So, particular attention to
cross-fertilization is solicited; each paper will also be reviewed by
one non-expert of some particular communication form in order to improve
the circulation of ideas.
Special Track Program
The Special Track on "AI and Expressive Media" invites researchers,
developers and practitioners working in artificial intelligence, human
sciences, media studies, music, art and design, and other related areas
to submit their works. The special track will occupy one full day of the
Congress and it will run in parallel with the other Special Tracks. The
program will include presentation of the selected papers and posters,
one invited talk and a final panel.
