Wolfgang Spohn: Reflexive Rationality, Tartu, Estonia, June 25-27

GOTTLOB FREGE LECTURES IN THEORETICAL PHILOSOPHY 2013

WOLFGANG SPOHN (KONSTANZ): REFLEXIVE RATIONALITY

Tartu's "Gottlob Frege Lectures in Theoretical Philosophy" will in 2013 be delivered by WOLFGANG SPOHN.
The title of this year's lecture series is "Reflexive Rationality". Wolfgang Spohn is chair of
philosophy and philosophy of science at the University of Konstanz (since 1996). Before, he held
professorships at Regensburg and Bielefeld. Wolfgang Spohn is one of the most distinguished
philosophers of science today, Fellow Elect at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences,
Stanford, and Member of the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina. In December 2012 he won the
Lakatos Award in Philosophy of Science for his book The Laws of Belief: Ranking Theory and its
Philosophical Implications (Oxford University Press, 2012). He has published widely on topics in
theoretical philosophy (epistemology and philosophy of science, in particular induction and
causation; metaphysics; philosophy of language and philosophy of mind; logic, philosophical logics,
and philosophy of logic and mathematics; action theory, decision theory, game theory, social choice
theory, and the theory of practical rationality in general), but is perhaps best know for his work on
Ranking Theory.
We are very glad that Wolfgang Spohn has accepted our inivitation to present the GOTTLOB FREGE LECTURES IN
THEORETICAL PHILOSOPHY in 2013. Everyone interested is invited to participate. Please send us an email

CALL FOR REGISTRATION - New Perspectives on External World Scepticism - Munich 9-10 July 2013

****************************************************

NEW PERSPECTIVES ON EXTERNAL WORLD SCEPTICISM 2013

Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP) - LMU Munich

9-10 July 2013

http://www.scepticism2013.philosophie.uni-muenchen.de

****************************************************

Is the external world largely as it appears to be? How can we rule out the possibility that we are constantly
deceived by a vicious demon or the Matrix? In response to the global sceptic, contemporary
epistemologists claim - for example - that perceptual justification is immediate in that it doesn't
require independent reason for rejecting sceptical alternatives. Others contend that we are a priori
entitled to trust "cornerstone" propositions that guarantee the reliability of our perceptions.
Another view is that ordinary hypotheses are preferable to sceptical alternatives because they better
explain our experiences. All these responses have been challenged with informal and formal objections.
Bayesian methodology seems to vindicate entitlement theories but it is arguably unsuitable to model the
initial state of radical ignorance presupposed by the sceptic. Immediate justification theories are
affected by gruelling difficulties, like the bootstrapping and the cognitive penetrability problem.
The thesis that explanatory force produces justification is controversial and - some contend -
incompatible with formal representations of rational belief.

The workshop focuses on these and other interesting responses to external world scepticism. It aims to
gather together traditional and formal epistemologists to foster collaboration between researchers
working from a variety of perspectives.
