NIck, Actually, the current system in Los Angeles County does not involve MAC (Medical Alert Center), anymore. The hospitals have a list of private providers and they deal directly with the Air providers for IFT's. When the private providers are unable to provide an aircraft then MAC gets involved and finds the closest public safety provider (LA County Fire, LA City Fire, LA County Sheriff, etc.) to complete the flight. MAC still maintains (via the Ready Net) the tracking system for monitoring all of the trauma centers. The paramedic base stations determine the destination for patients (by air) based upon designated cachement areas, age of the patient, and the trauma centers designated to accept patients from those cachement areas, etc. Tom Short LA County Fire Air Operations >>> medicnick <at> aol.com 12/28/2005 9:23 AM >>> In Los Angeles if a hospital needs interfacility transport, they call a central number. This number is staffed 24x7 by the county (regulatory agency/public health dept). They monitor the system status and track the rotation of interfacility providers. They will get the closest/quickest/next up/most appropriate transport crew there. That methodology puts the patient first by removing the business end.
