Re: Closest Chopper

NIck,

Actually, the current system in Los Angeles County does not involve MAC
(Medical Alert Center), anymore. The hospitals have a list of private
providers and they deal directly with the Air providers for IFT's. When
the private providers are unable to provide an aircraft then MAC gets
involved and finds the closest public safety provider (LA County Fire,
LA City Fire, LA County Sheriff, etc.) to complete the flight.

MAC still maintains (via the Ready Net) the tracking system for
monitoring all of the trauma centers. The paramedic base stations
determine the destination for patients (by air) based upon designated
cachement areas, age of the patient, and the trauma centers designated
to accept patients from those cachement areas, etc.

In Los Angeles if a hospital needs interfacility transport, they call a
central number. This number is staffed 24x7 by the county (regulatory
agency/public health dept). They monitor the system status and track the
rotation of interfacility providers. They will get the
closest/quickest/next up/most appropriate transport crew there.

That methodology puts the patient first by removing the business end.
That also requires a lot of 'managing' of the policy end to make sure
that you don't end up with 10 companies owned by the same person in

Re: Closest Chopper

Dear Nick and Tom,
Actually, MAC is still involved in interfacility transfers IF it is from a county to county facility, ie.
Olive View/UCLA to USC. Indeed, MAC will call either their own Air Squads (City, County, or Sheriffs), but
if the patient needs a higher level of care during the transport such as ventilatory support, and most IV
drip medications then MAC will call providers such as Mercy Air or California City Air 19. Both have
nurse/medic configurations and are more equip to handle the more critical transports.

List Moderation due to Spam

Attention Flightmed List Members:

As you may have noticed, a spam message made it's way through the
Flightmed filtering mechanism today. We're not sure how yet, or how
much more spam may follow.

Because of this, we've converted the list temporarily to full
moderation until the issue can be sorted out. This means that all
posts to Flightmed must be approved by a Moderator before they come
through to the list members. This may delay some of the posts and
replies, but since the traffic on the list is fairly low anyway, it
shouldn't be a major impact.

We apologize for the inconvenience. If you have any questions or
feedback related to this topic, please contact Alan Dobrowolski at
