Wikimania 2009 Scholarships

Wikimania 2009 [1], this year's global event devoted to Wikimedia [2] projects around the globe, is now accepting applications for scholarships to the conference. This year's conference will be handled from August 26-28 in Buenos Aires [3], Argentina [4]. The scholarship can be used to help offset the costs of travel and registration. For more information, check the official information page [5]. Please remember that the Call for Participation [6] is still open, please submit your papers! Without submissions, Wikimania would not be nearly as fun!

There appears to be no way of submitting discussions though. The only
options in the form are presentation or panel. Am I missing something?
I've done mine by selecting presentation and noting in the info that
it's meant to be a BOF (those do exist this year don't they?). Hope
that's ok!

It is OK. The application does not allow to specify BOF explicitly but you made it right. It is under review now as many other we hasve received yesterday.

2010 update

Dear all,

I know the bidders for Wikimania 2010 are probably very impatient and excited, but unfortunately, I don't think the Wikimania jury is going to come to consensus by tomorrow on which bid should host the conference. We are going over every point of each bid according to these criteria:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2010/Judging_criteria

and there's a lot of information to work through.

Bidders, please congratulate yourselves on all producing strong bids -- there is not an obvious choice :) I'll try to keep everyone updated on the timeline, (which probably should have been changed a long time ago to reflect how much time it takes to talk about the bids).

thanks,
Phoebe (wm jury moderator)

Update on 2010 timetable?

Could we get an update on when we're likely to get a result? I have
potential suppliers wanting to know if we're going to go ahead with
the order or not - I told them I would know if the conference was
going ahead on the 16th and they are now chasing me up! I would like
to be able to tell something more than "soon".

I don't blame the Jury for needing extra time, the bids are very close
and I don't envy their decision, but some idea of how much extra time
they need would be helpful. Thanks!

Re: Update on 2010 timetable?

Hi Thomas and all,
My apologies, I meant to send an email to everyone yesterday.

The jury met over the weekend after lots of online discussion and agreed that another week would be necessary to reach consensus and develop feedback for the bids. So we are hoping to be done by the end of this coming weekend, April 26.

My apologies for the delay, I know everyone is quite anxious. In retrospect the timetable should have been longer to begin with -- it always takes a while to talk about the bids, and to fit deliberations around the schedule of eight busy people! For next year whoever moderates the jury should  add an extra two weeks to deliberations, whether we think we need it or not :)

That said, the jury is not at consensus yet, so while everyone is going to try their best to spend lots of time working on it this week, it might take longer.

Thanks! If at all possible, could you try and do the UK a massive
favour and get the result out before midday (UTC) on the 26th? Our AGM
is that afternoon and it would be really good to know if we've won the
bid or not so we can discuss what happens next if we have.

I don't know if and how many people from North or South America are
involved in this, but noon BST (which I assume is what you mean,
"midday" is vague and Britain is in UTC+1 right now due to DST) is
really very early there :D (4 AM Pacific, 7 AM Eastern), so that might
be a bit of a problem.
