Wikimania Jury meeting Number 1

The Wikimania Jury meeting number 1 will be beginning place within the next
half hour, at 0300 UTC. This meeting is taking place on irc channel
#wikimania, and will be moderated. We expect the Brisbane team will be
making its presentation, although we're not certain if any of the other
teams will be there.

If you don't have an IRC client, you can utilize the web based client at
<http://wikimania2008.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC> and choose channel #wikimania.
If this page does not load properly for you, then go to
<http://chatwikizine.memebot.com/cgi-bin/cgiirc/irc.cgi> and pick #wikimania
from the drop-down list of channels.

If you cannot make this one, and would still like to attend, meeting number
2 will be held at 1500 UTC, in just over 12 hours.

Thanks.

Dear Tim (Berners-Lee),

I’m writing to you on behalf of the organising committee for Wikimania. This is the annual conference for the Wikimedia Foundation. Don’t think I need to tell yo what they do.No.8 on Alexa’s top 500.

Yes, please; a talk. Just half an hour at most. We’d (all right, I) would really like some insight into what you where thinking when you did the first prop to CERN’s management about your “Information Management” idea in . And what prop you would offer them today.

The audience is WMF’s universe, which is just starting to grow now as their Head Office have, literally, just moved to San Fran and employed a whole bunch of new recruits. So they are really looking for some ideas about what should be their next steps.

Alexandria’s a long way, but please don’t let that stop you. I’m sure we could organise a link between your present (Uni) home and Egypt’s new National Library’s auditorium.  In fact I’d like to encourage it as it might help to get the information centric to reconsider their communication’s networking. I’m trying to see of we could strap together a mini-megaconference.  http://digitalunion.osu.edu/megaconference/

And to be quite blunt, we need a headline act. (no guitar required)

If you are interested, these are some other ideas floating around the WMF traps. http://wikimania2008.wikimedia.org/wiki/Program_ideas

We could see about a global workshop if you wanted to suggest something interesting.

Appreciate your interest, and your time. If you’d like to say yea or nay, just a reply on this list would encourage people who don’t believe God’s talk.

Obsequiously yours,

Simon Fenton- Jones

Note that everyone is very welcome to contribute program and speaker
ideas; we are especially looking for excellent speakers from the
Middle East & Africa.

There's a page to brainstorm ideas here:
http://wikimania2008.wikimedia.org/wiki/Program_ideas

And more volunteers are always welcome to help out. That said, it's
generally prudent to try and coordinate formal invitations to the
conference, which is just one of the many tasks of the Wikimania
program committee :)

best,
Phoebe

It's the annual "poke TBL" game! Is there a term limit for # of
consecutive times one can be invited to keynote wikimania? Bonus
points for finding more than three different ways to poke him.

Hi Guys,

Sorry to wake yu up.

Cary wrote, “.I am copying Mr. Berners-Lee to ask him to kindly please disregard your

Pheobe wrote, “There's a page to brainstorm ideas here:

Sorry. The only ideas for sessions I see here are mine, from December.

Samuel wrote, “ps - Please note : he may show up incognito even when he declines to speak”.

Sorry, He might, Now he knows there’s something going on.

You’ll really have to forgive me. If yu are having conversations, which I (or anyone else can’t see) I won’t know about them of course. So you’ll understand that activity needs to be seen to be understood. I’m just used to a culture where conversations happen above the radar. If you understand that I’m used to producing (primarily the AV stuff for) conferences for 8,000 min this is so very late in the day. And I’d really like to see the WMF’s communities understand what, globally, is going on.

Sorry, simon.

I am afraid you missed the point.
You are not in charge to send an invitation to anyone. You are not the
person who is expected to act on the Wikimania Organizing Committee
without consulting its member.

It doesn't matter who we are going to invite. You are not just the
person to contact them. At least then and now. And I am quite sure you
won't be either.

Thanks.

Hi Simon,

Of course, your input is always welcome but per Aphaia and others, you shouldnt have gone ahead on your own and contacted people.

However I think you feel we have no progress on this front so I will fill you (and everyone) in:

There is a program committee in action that has resulted from a couple of calls for participation here on the list from people who responded, attended meetings at the time and created accounts on the Pentabarf organizing software, this committe is not private and you are welcome to join anytime if you are interested (I can add you to the mail list).  Uptill now we held a rotating weekly meeting every weekend that resulted first in the CfP and second in a list of over 25 local (middle-east) and global speakers to be invited, that list is kept on the team wiki because most of it is unconfirmed yet, however most of that list has been assigned a point of contact, which is a person who will initiate contact with that specific organization/person. We are currently debating things like the formal invitation process, invitation budget and costs, scope of interest in  subjects, etc. So you see it is not very good for someone to bypass that and send a localized invite. We need to maintain a consistent image for Wikimania and Wikimedia.

That said, as I mentioned before you are welcome to join and jump in on the subjects debated and lend a hand if you want...
