CIS-A2K Work Plan for July 14-June 15

Dear Wikimedians,

I am glad to share with you the detailed work plan of CIS-A2K for the period July 2014-July 2015 [1] . This work plan consists of 21 plans across 6 verticals.

These are:
* 7 Language Area Plans
* 3 Community Strengthening Initiatives
* 8 Stand-alone Wikimedia Projects
* Creating Movement Resources
* Publicity, Research and Documentation
* General Support and Service to the Movement

The work plan includes details of aims, objectives, programme activities and expected outcomes. Most of the language area plans were put together in active consultation with the respective Wikimedia language communities. Various inputs and ideas contributed, opportunities provided, and challenges thrown at the CIS-A2K program during the last year by the Wikimedia communities in India, our institutional partners, Executive Committee (EC) of Wikimedia India Chapter (WMIN) and the Wikimedia Foundation's Grantmaking Team have significantly informed our work plans.

Each plan has an independent budget and is closely mapped on to the implementation plan. An attempt is made to correlate why we are spending a certain amount on a certain activity. Thus all these budgets are very optimally planned and the overall budget is an assimilation. CIS-A2K believes that this will give mission level transparency to our work and provide a clearer structure of accountability to the movement and the community.

Please do share your feedback and inputs on the respective plan discussion pages. We would be glad to correct ourselves if you could point out to any major omissions and errors in plans. We will be approaching the FDC requesting support for this work plan [2].

(Announcement) Selection of Community Communications Consultant at CIS-A2K

Dear Wikimedians,

I am happy to share with you that Mr. Rahimanuddin Shaik has been selected for the role of "Community Communications Consultant" at CIS-A2K! Please join me in congratulating him on the selection and wish him success with the assignment.

I am also excited to share a new model of recruitment (crowd-sourcing a selection?) that I have developed this time, which I feel is very useful in a volunteer movement context like Wikimedia.

15 Wikimedians, from across 9 Indian languages and English, took part in the anonymous evaluation of the applicants through a google form. This was followed by an interview, which also included some of the interesting questions Wikimedians wanted to ask the candidate.  In addition to the interview, the WMIN EC was also involved in the selection process. Moksh on behalf of the EC went through the profiles and also recommended Rahimanuddin as one of the ideal candidate for this position.  Based on this collective feedback Mr. Rahimanuddin was selected for this assignment.

Though this mode of evaluation took a lot of effort (in designing the evaluation form and liaising and following up with the community members), I feel the entire exercise was very productive. It's been a learning experience for me, especially when I look at the diverse set of interesting questions that came up from the evaluators.

I also feel this model:
a) gives a better acceptance for the candidate across all major Indian language communities in India. Basically there is at least one Wikimedian who knows the candidate's detailed professional and Wikimedia profile now  :)
b) actively involves community members in the decision making processes of Wikimedia movement entity (here CIS-A2K).
c) brings diverse perspectives from which the candidates profile is evaluated.
d) reinforces CIS-A2K's commitment to actively engage with the community in an open, transparent and productive manner.

However, adopting a similar model for large number of applications could pose a problem.  Would be nice to hear your thoughts on how this model could be further refined.  Please let me know (off list) if you are interested in refining the google form, and I will share the necessary link.

Thanks to all those Indic Wikimedians for giving their valuable time in the evaluation process!

During interactions with many Wikipedians, it has been realized that many are looking for data, that is otherwise not available in the public domain, which could be used for enhancing quality of articles/projects on Wikipedia. [తెవికీ] Wikimedia India needs your support: Our First Fundraiser

Cross posting to reach mass, apologies if you have already read this!
*Dear all,*
*On the second anniversary of the Chapter, we made public our intention of
running our first fundraiser. Going ahead with the first phase of this
plan, we will be running a central site notice on the chapter website for a
period of two calendar months starting 1 February, 2013. In the second
phase of this plan, we aim to approach high networth individuals and
corporates in the month of March 2013. This will be done using personal and
professional networks of current and past EC members, staff, volunteers
among others.*
Suggestions, help and support from the community on what we can do to
ensure success of this fundraiser are welcome. Every drop counts :)

Donations can be made by Online Bank Transfer (NEFT/RTGS) or by sending us
a Cheque through snail mail. We are unable to accept card payments at this
current time. Link to the donation page on our website:

Thanking you,
Executive Committee,
Wikimedia India.

*Reasoning* (From our public statement on 4 January, 2013)

A lot of people may ask why the chapter needs a fundraiser when it has
access to WMF funding. The answer is, we are still ineligible for FDC of
WMF (we hope to be eligible for the second round of funding in 2013) and
would need to rely on grants, spending of which is restricted by the WMF.
Since formation, the chapter has relied heavily on the Executive Committee
to take on the burden of running the show. In an ideal world, the EC would
like to take on the role of guiding the chapter rather than actually be
responsible for operations after two years of incorporation, which should
be best done by professionals rather than volunteers in their spare time.

The chapter has hired an employee (Sowmyan Tirumurti, our Executive
Manager) as well as plans to lease its own office premises in Bangalore. We
will need the help of those volunteers who are in a position to support us.
It could be a small individual donation or in the form of a corporate
donation from an institution. A small token of support from you could go a
long way in helping us achieving our goals of furthering the movement in
*Thanks and regards,*
*Karthik Nadar,*
*Secretary, Wikimedia India Chapter.*
