Ready for early translation: Tech News #36 (2014)

Greetings,

The latest tech newsletter is ready for early translation:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News/2014/36

There are lots of interesting things this week :)

I'm planning to send the newsletter on Monday morning (UTC), as usual.
The existing translations will be posted on the wikis in that
language.

I may make a few edits tomorrow (and remove empty sections), but the
content should generally remain fairly stable. I'll let you know
tomorrow in any case.

Let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns. As
always, I appreciate your help and feedback.

Thanks!

Community Consultation for Media Viewer now live

Hi all,

A community consultation about the new Media Viewer software feature is  taking place at [1], until September 7. The Wikimedia Foundation hopes to hear your suggestions for improvement of the editor and reader experience, focusing on the most urgent needs for the tool. We encourage you all to participate, and welcome contributions and suggestions that work towards improving the experience for all.

Discussions are in English, but you can contribute feedback in other languages.

Thank you,

rachel

Media viewer consultation banner - quick translation request

Hi all,

Later today the engineering department is starting a meta consultation on the media viewer software and they want to put a banner up for logged in users to alert them to this. I've created a simple banner for this and if people are able to translate it quickly it would be great so that we can roll out with a couple languages already done.

You can find the translation interface for the banner at https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Translate&group=Centralnotice-tgroup-MediaViewerConsultation_A and I've copied the text below if you'd rather email me a translation.

Have you used the new media viewer?
Your feedback will help improve the user experience.

Thanks in advance!
James

Ready for early translation: (short) Tech News #35 (2014)

Greetings,

The latest tech newsletter is ready for early translation:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News/2014/35

I'm planning to send the newsletter on Monday morning (UTC), as usual.
The existing translations will be posted on the wikis in that
language.

This week's issue is very short because I've moved some of the
non-urgent items to next week, so that people learn about them when
they can actually see the changes and test the new features. It's so
short that it took me only 5 minutes to do the French translation :)

I may make a few edits tomorrow (and remove empty sections), but the
content should generally remain fairly stable. I'll let you know
tomorrow in any case.

Let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns. As
always, I appreciate your help and feedback.

Thanks!

Ready for early translation: Tech News #34 (2014)

Greetings,

The latest tech newsletter is ready for early translation:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News/2014/34

I'm planning to send the newsletter on Monday morning (UTC), as usual.
The existing translations will be posted on the wikis in that
language.

Note that due to people traveling back from Wikimania, and others
being on vacation, this week's issue is fairly short.

I may make a few edits tomorrow, but the content should generally
remain fairly stable. I'll let you know tomorrow in any case.

Let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns. As
always, I appreciate your help and feedback.

Thanks!

Please help translate a few additional paragraphs for fundraising pages

Hi dear translators,

Due to some recent technical issues, as well as new integration of additional payment methods, a few edits have been made to the two fundraising pages listed below:

* Ways to Give page  (to be used for this page)

We would highly appreciate your help to translate the additional paragraphs and make sure that translations are up to date.

Thank you very much for your continuous help and valuable support.

Kind regards,

Jessica

VisualEditor Translation Sprint results

Hi all, I wanted to send a report about the VisualEditor Translation Sprint which was launched as an online activity during Wikimania. Some great results were achieved: you can find some highlights at [1] .

We noticed that during the translathon (possibly also because of other translation-related events at Wikimania) several interface messages were reviewed, like those for Traditional Chinese (zh-hant) and Dutch, and that about 600 messages were translated. One language even progressed from 0% to 100%! So we're excited to announce that the most prolific translator is (drum roll...) Deryck Chan!
Your barnstar is on its way.

A round of applause also to all the editors who took part in this. All of your contributions matter; and we heard from many of you in London that you want to involve other members of your communities in similar efforts to complete the work once you're back home, so really we couldn't be happier. We're also quite excited that some of you even joined the Translathon after Wikimania; interface messages in Breton, for instance, are being created even now. Many thanks to Siebrand, Keegan and to everybody else who supported the volunteers in the last days, including people who managed to update the user guide before the Translathon started. Please contact our team if you have questions or need further help with translation activities; meanwhile you can learn more about how to get involved at [2] .

Cheers,
rachel

Thank you for Tech News & see you soon

Hello translators,
it is with great regret that I am forced to suspend my activity on
Tech News with immediate effect.

After <https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/153302/> was merged and
deployed to the Wikimedia cluster earlier today, implementing a new
protection level which prevents volunteer Wikimedians from editing
certain wiki pages, I can no longer in good conscience support the
Wikimedia Foundation.

<https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/153302/> is a change that I find
completely unacceptable. It is a change that stands in direct
contradiction to the wonderful cooperation between the Foundation and
the volunteer community that's been Tech News.

It has been a great pleasure working with you on Tech News for the
past year, but after this disgusting usurpation of power and sickening
cheek towards the community, I am forced to suspend my involvement
with Tech News.

From now on, I will neither work on the English version of Tech News,
nor translate future issues into Polish.

If you agree with my feelings towards this change, please consider
suspending your translations of Tech News as well as other volunteer
translations you are doing for the Foundation (especially if they are
fundraising translations).

I am planning to suspend my involvement with Tech News until
<https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/153302/> is reverted but until
that day comes, I cannot volunteer my time and effort for the
Foundation any further.

The current issue of Tech News will be published by Guillaume
tomorrow, as usual. I have no information about the future issues, but
perhaps Tech News can continue without me.

Thank you for your time, and the best of luck to you all.

                Tomasz

Ready for early translation: Tech News bulletin #33 (2014)

Hi!
The latest issue of the Tech News bulletin is ready for early
translation at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2014/33

Due to the Wikimania conference and the lack of software changes, this
issue of Tech News is fairly short, so translating it should take less
time than usual.

The bulletin will be sent to subscribers on Monday morning (UTC); all
translations existing by that time will be posted on wikis in those
languages.

There might be some edits tomorrow, but the content should remain
fairly stable -- I will let you know as soon as a final version of the
issue is published.

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns. I
greatly appreciate your help, feedback and involvement.

PS If you are at Wikimania, please join Guillaume for his presentation
of Tech News in Auditorium 2 at 14:30 local time on Sunday! Thanks!

                 Tomasz
