History of mergehistory

Why is mergehistory right not enabled by default? I only found
thiscommit http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Code/MediaWiki/27823which
says "disabled by default for now".

IIRC Aaron created that special page, left disabled by default as an
experimental feature, and I probably went "eeeeeh that sounds scary" and we
never got back to making sure it was production-ready.

Probably should get picked back up and polished off at some point...

Re: History of mergehistory

It was intended to replace selective undeletion as part of a large deletion
schema overhaul, which fell through, so there wasn't as much motivation to
get it in use. Also, I recall some enwiki admins saying that it still
needed more granularity for some hairy merge scenarios.

Re: other conferences in November - grow the MediaWiki dev community

Additionally:

This Saturday, November 5, the Wikimedia Conference Netherlands is
happening in Utrecht, the Netherlands. WMF's Siebrand Mazeland is giving
a talk on "Language support in MediaWiki" and WMF's Timo Tijhof and Roan
Kattouw will give a talk on Resource Loader 2. All proceedings are
planned to be in Dutch, but there's a possibility that Roan and Timo
will give their talk in English. http://www.wikimediaconferentie.nl/

November 8-11, WMF's Leslie Carr will be attending the Grace Hopper
Celebration of Women in Computing, in Portland, Oregon, USA. She'll be
staffing the open source booth:
* Wednesday: 11-noon, 8pm-9pm
* Thursday: 5pm-8pm

Wikimedia Foundation sponsored the Latinas in Computing Scholarship for
GHC, enabling an engineering student to attend the conference. More
about GHC: http://gracehopper.org/2011/

If you're going to either event, say hi to us!

Mobile triage report

I'm going to be trimming my triage reports to only the bugs covered in
order to reduce the amount of time they take me. In the future, I'll
just provide a list of the bugs covered and make sure the bugs
themselves are updated with any information from the triage.

For now see the etherpad http://etherpad.wikimedia.org/BugTriage-2011-10
and the log
http://prototype.wikimedia.org/logs/%23wikimedia-dev/20111026.txt
starting at 16:08:16 and see the comments on these bugs.

Getting the first image of a page

Hey,

Is there a nice way to obtain the first image on a page?

My current solution works, but is not very nice:
* get the images on the page via
api.php?action=query&prop=images&titles=pagename
* get the page contest via index.php?title=pagename&action=raw
* find the first occurrence of one of the image names obtained in the API
request

Cheers

The question is what to call "first". First images on many pages are icons
from maintenance templates, you know:) Or the first image in page text is
displayed at the bottom of the page with CSS. Or it may be generated by
template and not be visible in wikitext.
