Hello,

FUEL - frequently used entries for localization - is basically a set of terms used for computer work in any particular language. Efforts are on among the open source workers to standardise these terms to maintain uniformity. Results of the work in Odia, carried out mostly at RedHat, is attached. That for Hindi is available at https://fedorahosted.org/fuel/wiki/fuel-hindi .

As far as Odia is concerned different vendors/developers have come out with their versions of many products. Two major examples are Microsoft's Windows 7 / Office 2010 and Fedora Linux. Modular's Ankur Indian Laguage Office Suite also has tried to present Odia interface for all the applications included. However, the variations are wide and Odia interfaces are far from being smooth. All these are available with us if anyone wants to take a look. We are preparing some notes on these. Microsoft's style guide is at

Personally, I have always felt the need for a dedicated group taking up this work on a long term and continuous basis. But we have not been able to devote that time and energy in this direction. Even now we are very short of manpower and are rather pressed with our work on the digitization of Odia periodicals. We hope to be in a better position after April 2012. In the meantime we can use any help available in this direction.

Manoj, whose mail is appended below, has been planning for a workshop on the subject as detailed below. We feel that it should be taken up seriously as a starting point for a concerted effort over a period of at least one year, rather than achieving definite results during the workshop. We should also look at some general problems faced in the Odia language computing activity. Some of these are outlined in the old notes attached with this mail. Windows issues will also have to be addressed in some way.

Please consider the matter and air your views as to the best way to go about this. Also please try to bring this to the notice of others. If everyone feels that we should get together on January 26-27, we can make arrangements here at Srujanika or any other suitable place.

We will make a wider announcement after the event is fixed up.

Looking forward to hearing from all soon.

With best wishes,

Nikhil

Dear Nikhil Sir,
Happy New Year to you and Srujanika team.

Sending you the fuel Odia .pdf file in attachment. And i'm preparing the FUEL Style Guide for Odia. I'll send that to you for verification after completing.
I already spoke to Gora bhai and Arun (working in Microsoft, Hyderabad) about the event. They will come to bbsr for two days to attend this event.
Only we need one or two Linguist people during the evaluation process. Please let me know if you have any contacts.
We are planning to have it on January last week, probably on 26 th & 27 th.
Please let me know if it is possible for you on 26 th & 27th. Else let us know your convenient time.
Also i'm relying on you about the venue where we can sit together for the discussion.

Thanks & Regards!
Manoj

Dear Indic wikipedians

One of the aspects that was raised during the discussions with almost all Indic language wiki communities was the need to build existing communities, motivate existing community members, attract new community members by increasing awareness of projects and communities, and to celebrate all the possible occasions.

I have a suggestion that can contribute to all of these in some manner. The suggestion is to celebrate the anniversaries of Indic language wikipedias. And as you might agree, the first edit date of a wiki is the best anniversary that a community can celebrate.  I have collected information for the birthdays of each Indic Wikipedia.  This is the day on which the first edit happened on the respective language wikipedia. (The Indian Standard Time is used while recording the date and time).

I am listing those days below for your reference,

I recommend that we use these anniversary dates to do the following
  • Organize a small wikiconfernce or some other major event for the respective language wikipedia
  • Organize community meetups to celebrate this
  • Coincide community events around these meetups (such as outreach sessions, photo events, or launching specific WikiProjects)
  • Invite press to these meetups and use different platforms to spread word about respective language wikipedia.
From the above table we can see that Assamese is the first Indic language wikipedia, and 4 Indic language wikipedias will celebrate 10th anniversary this year (2012). :) So it is time to get prepared for the celebration.

Happy Birthday Celebrations!

<span>I</span><span>&nbsp;have a suggestion that can contribute to all of these in some manner.&nbsp;</span><span></span><span>The suggestion is to celebrate the anniversaries of Indic language wikipedias. And as you might agree, the first edit date of a wiki is the best&nbsp;anniversary that a community can celebrate. &nbsp;I have collected information for the birthdays of each Indic Wikipedia. &nbsp; This is the day on which the first edit happened on the respective language wikipedia.

Manoj

Re: Fwd: Birthday of Indic language wikipedias

Thanks Siju

for the pointer to celebrate the birthday of the Odia Wiki. we
community members will surely do something here. currently i am in
Odisha and am here till this month end.
Today i got a chance to connect to the Principal & computer teacher of
My school, SBHS here at cuttack. they sound interested and there is a
potential to host a work shop to 100 students (class 6 to 10th) on
Saturday 21st jan.

pls let me know if any support in form of take away's (t
shirt/badges/printed faq booklet etc) that cd be possible for this.
also pls community members if few of us could connec to plan properly
for this.

also siju is it possible to mail me foundation official doc as cover
letter/introduction letter in about the Wiki workshop targeted to
schools. i think mentioning the success of tamil /Malalayam school
programme can be of help too. i ll take this to school authority with
a event poster may be for generating interest .

hope this will be good pilot project to start similar activity ahead.
waiting to hear from you .

also pls community members if few of us could connec to plan properly
for this.

We shall plan this. Since we already have few Odia wiki community members in Cuttack/Bhubaneshwar it is easy to organize this workshop. So we shall discuss this in wiki and take this forward.

I remember Subhashish and few Odia wiki community members created an FAQ booklet earlier. It might require some update. Definitely we can reuse it after the update.

also siju is it possible to mail me foundation official  doc as cover
letter/introduction letter in  about the Wiki workshop targeted to
schools. i think mentioning the success of tamil /Malalayam school
programme can be of help too. i ll take this to school authority with

Let me discuss this. I come back to you regarding this.

Best wishes for all the efforts of Odia wiki community members to build its community. We definitely need more programs to attract more Odia speakers to Odia wikipedia and its sister projects.

Re: Fwd: Birthday of Indic language wikipedias

<at> Asutosh bhai, great to hear that they agreed for this. We can either host the Wiki11 celebration over there or the birthday of Odia WP over there depending on availability of you guys.

also pls community members if few of us could connec to plan properly

Definitely we can reuse it after the update.

also siju is it possible to mail me foundation official  doc as cover
letter/introduction letter in  about the Wiki workshop targeted to
schools. i think mentioning the success of tamil /Malalayam school
programme can be of help too. i ll take this to school authority with
a event poster may be for generating interest .
About the official letter head, we can use the wiki.wikimedia.in letterhead, I'll soon send a formal letter addressing the head teacher of the school. Pls check if the adressee's designation in the following format is correct or not:
The Headmaster
Secondary Board High School
Cuttack, Odisha - PLEASE LET ME KNOW THE PIN CODE

Let me discuss this. I come back to you regarding this.

Best wishes for all the efforts of Odia wiki community members to build its community. We definitely need more programs to attract more Odia speakers to Odia wikipedia and its sister projects.

&gt;<br>
&gt; Dear Indic wikipedians<br>
&gt;<br>
&gt; One of the aspects that was raised during the discussions with almost all<br>
&gt; Indic language wiki communities was the need to build existing<br>
&gt; communities, motivate existing community members, attract new community<br>
&gt; members by increasing awareness of projects and communities, and to<br>
&gt; celebrate all the possible occasions.<br>
&gt;<br>
&gt; I have a suggestion that can contribute to all of these in some manner. The<br>
&gt; suggestion is to celebrate the anniversaries of Indic language wikipedias.<br>
</div>&gt; And as you might agree, the first edit date of a wiki is the best *<br>
&gt; anniversary* that a community can celebrate. &nbsp;I have collected information<br><div>&gt; for the birthdays of each Indic Wikipedia. &nbsp; This is the day on which the<br>
</div>&gt; first edit happened on the respective language wikipedia. (The *Indian<br>
&gt; Standard Time* is used while recording the date and time).<br><div>&gt;<br>

&gt;<br>
&gt;<br>
&gt; I recommend that we use these anniversary dates to do the following<br>
&gt;<br>
</div>&gt; &nbsp; &nbsp;- Organize a small wikiconfernce or some other major event for the<br>
&gt; &nbsp; &nbsp;respective language wikipedia<br>
&gt; &nbsp; &nbsp;- Organize community meetups to celebrate this<br>
&gt; &nbsp; &nbsp;- Coincide community events around these meetups (such as outreach<br><div>&gt; &nbsp; &nbsp;sessions, photo events, or launching specific WikiProjects)<br>
</div>&gt; &nbsp; &nbsp;- Invite press to these meetups and use different platforms to spread<br><div>&gt; &nbsp; &nbsp;word about respective language wikipedia.<br>
&gt;<br>
</div>&gt; From the above table we can see that *Assamese* is the first Indic language<br>
&gt; wikipedia, and 4 Indic language wikipedias will celebrate *10th<br>
&gt; anniversary* this<br><div><div>&gt; year (2012). :) So it is time to get prepared for the celebration.<br>
&gt;<br>
&gt; Happy Birthday Celebrations!<br>

[Press]: The New Indian Express : " Malayalam Wikipedia gaining popularity"

The New Indian Express  : " Malayalam Wikipedia gaining popularity"
http://expressbuzz.com/states/kerala/malayalam-wikipedia-gaining-popularity/351179.html

Malayalam seems to have more lovers in the virtual world. The activities of Malayalam Wikipedia might surpass every literary movement in the state so far. The Malayalam Wikipedia movement had been active with an avalanche of information, especially in the last year.

As many as 5,755 new articles were added in 2011, making the total number of articles 21,873. As many as 8,744 new members were added in the last year alone.
The popularity of the movement is the effect of concerted effort of the Wikimedians.

The community, which joins in the virtual world, has introduced a number of activities such as ‘Wiki Grandhasala’, ‘Wiki Nikhandu’, Mapping, development of one-line information and lot more. A number of workshops was also organised throughout the state, making the movement more popular.

The Malayalam Wikipedia has the seventh largest collection of articles, (21,873) in India. Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Bishnupriya Manipuri and Bengali top the list with the highest number of articles.
The Wikimedians expect that the articles in Malayalam would reach 25,000 by the middle of this year. An online quiz was one of the programmes conducted to popularise the movement. The programme began in October.
As part of the 10th anniversary, a project was mooted to add more information to the one-line information.

Around 250 one-line informations were identified and around 80 were developed.  Malayalam wiki dictionary now has 71,184 definitions.
As many as 10,573 new definitions were added in 2011. Some definitions were made more informative by uploading related photos.
Apart from Malayalam and English, the Malayalam wiki dictionary has definitions of words in Tamil, Japanese, Hindi/ Sanskrit, Korean, Arabic/ Urdu, Chinese, French, Persian, Dutch, Hebrew, Bengali and Greek.

One of the innovative projects was ‘Malayalam Loves Wikipedia’ movement, where Wikimedians could contribute relevant and copyright-free pictures of individuals, objects, plants etc.
As part of this programme as many as 2,158 copyright-free pictures were added to Wikipedia.

Ramesh N G, admin of Malayalam Wikipedia, who is an IT engineer based in Bangalore said 2011 was an eventful year for Wikipedia.

“Earlier the contributors were mainly IT employees and NRKs. It has changed. Now there are contributors from various fields such as medicine, law, academics etc. This makes information more authentic. School students actively got involved in programmes such as Wiki Grandhasala, which made the movement even more popular among students,” Ramesh added.

[Press]: The Hindu : " Wikipedia turns 11 today "

Cross posting... to "Wikipedia-OR" :) A BIG shout out on turning Wikipedia 11 :)

The Hindu : " Wikipedia turns 11 today "

The world's largest free encyclopaedia turns 11 on Sunday. To mark the occasion, the Wikipedia community will host events in seven cities across the country. The community is also celebrating the first anniversary of the Wikimedia India chapter.

On this occasion, the India chapter will launch a new portal  (www.wikimedia.in ) for easy access to Wikimedia sites in the Indian languages. Wikipedia is currently available in 21 Indian languages.

The India chapter is focussed on creating greater awareness of Wikipedia in Indian languages and to increase the volunteer editor base and Indian content through its initiatives. “The portal will make it easier to locate Indian language Wikipedias and other projects,” said Arun Ram, executive committee member of Wikimedia India.

The Bangalore event, open to all Wikipedia users, contributors and enthusiasts, is being held at the Centre for Internet and Society at Domlur (Bangalore).

Besides Bangalore, events are being held in Ahmedabad, Cuttack, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune, all centres where Wikipedia editors or contributors are present in sizeable numbers.
