[IRC]: India Program: Community Building Pilot (7th June - 9:30 p.m)

Hey folks,


Hisham had posted an update on the community building pilot Shiju ran as part of India Program. This pilot was run in Assam but there are tips and pointers and suggestions from this pilot that are relevant for all Indic communities. As part of the India Programs IRCs, we propose the first monthly IRC of June to be on this topic. We'd like to discuss how to build and support communities by increasing the number of editors, assessing progress on Wikiprojects as well as fostering possibilities of new collaborations.

I wanted to share with you an update on the work that Shiju[1] is doing on Indic languages[2] as part of India Program.[3]  A guiding principle for the thinking and efforts of our team is that community building should be the most essential aspect of all the work that we do.  In the context of small Indic communities, Shiju has been working to try and identify the various elements that need to come together to foster community building.  This update is about the Community Building pilot[4] that was run for the Assamese community.  For context, community building means different things to different people and in fact there was a very interesting post[5] that Shiju put out that articulated his thinking on this and, hence, our priorities.  

The results of these efforts have been outstanding
  • number of editors on Assamese Wikipedia has increased to 31 in April 2012 (from 18 in December 2011 and just 10 in November 2011.)
  • number of Wikiprojects increased to 6 (from a situation where there were no reasonably active ones in December 2011- and including 5 Wikiprojects independently conceptualised and managed by the community)
  • average monthly edits on Assamese Wikipedia increased to about 5000 in April 2012 from around 3000 in November 2011
There are 5 key factors that are responsible for this remarkable growth
  1. Strong communication.  This started with Shiju building personal connections with Assamese editors and then encouraging them to communicate with each other on-wiki, online and in meet--ups and outreach sessions.
  2. Initial push.  Shiju visited Assam in January where he spent time in 2 towns with 7 of the most active community members, who also conducted 2 outreach sessions. This visit has proved to be really useful because it helped to energise the community and also helped to establish a personal relationship between Shiju and these editors (and also, amongst the editors themselves.)
  3. Encouraging collaboration.  Wikiprojects and outreach are really useful to galvanise a community and helped build personal equations. It's wonderful to see the increase in Wikiprojects and 
  4. Building capacity & confidence.  In all the work that has been done for the Assamese community, the endeavour has been to build capacity.  For instance, support was given to get basic outreach material including FAQs prepared and outreach sessions were guided by Shiju.  It's inspiring to see the Assamese community now take things to a whole new level and plan out an ambitious 10th anniversary.[6] 
  5. Healthy environment.  This is the last - but probably the most essential point - and it is something I want to call out because it is what will help or severely hinder the abilities of individual communities realise their dreams and potential.  The reason why the Assamese community is making such wonderful steps forward is because there is 
  • a set of editors with the right level of initiative and motivation
  • a strong sense of co-operation and good spirit amongst the editors
  • an extremely welcoming approach to new editors
None of this would have been possible without the efforts of every single Assamese community members.  In the early days when Shiju started off, he was interacting with Bishnu, Dipankar, Gitartha, Jyoti & Prabhakar - who helped organise the first meet-ups and outreach sessions.  Thanks to their efforts, a list of thank-yous would now be 31 strong!  Thank you and congratulations to all of you!

To the Assamese community, I wish you the very best for your 10th anniversary.[6]  There are exciting plans including your photo contest and your article contest and the meet-up and the outreach session.  I know that you are doing most of the event largely independently (with Noopur[7] providing media assistance for the 10th anniversary and an India Chapter[8] grant[9] supporting you.)  This is the true signs of a community that is coming of age.  There are tremendous opportunities in outreach to get new editors, initiatives like your article & photo contests to improve content and in proposed projects like offline to make transformational changes in the community. 

With regard to the way forward for India Program, the pilot design page[4] on meta[3] has now been updated.  The next steps are going to be to see how we can adapt or build on these experiences with other communities, and as we move to other communities, do them in a more scaleable manner.

জানাচ্ছি যে, আগামী শুক্রবার, ৮ জুন ২০১২
তারিখে সকাল ১০:০০টায় অনুষ্ঠিত হতে
যাচ্ছে দিনাজপুরের প্রথম উইকিপিডিয়া
মিটআপ, যার মূল আয়োজক দিনাজপুরের
উইকিপিডিয়ানগণ। দিনাজপুরের এই
উইকিপিডিয়া মিটআপ শুধু দিনাজপুরের
প্রথম মিটআপই নয়, বরং এটি হচ্ছে রংপুর

মিটআপে অংশগ্রহণ করা হয়তো সম্ভব হবে
না, তবে আমরা আশা করি অন্তত

মিটআপে যোগ দেবেন। বিশেষ করে
উত্তরবঙ্গের প্রথম মিটআপ আয়োজনকারী
রাজশাহীর উইকিপিডিয়ানদের আমরা এই
মিটআপে বিশেষভাবে আশা করি। আপনারা হয়তো
ইতিমধ্যেই জেনে থাকবেন, রাজশাহীর
সক্রিয় উইকিপিডিয়াগণ ইতিমধ্যেই প্রথম

মিটআপ, যার মূল আয়োজক দিনাজপুরের উইকিপিডিয়ানগণ। দিনাজপুরের এই
উইকিপিডিয়া মিটআপ শুধু দিনাজপুরের প্রথম মিটআপই নয়, বরং এটি হচ্ছে রংপুর
বিভাগের প্রথম উইকিপিডিয়া মিটআপ ও রাজশাহীর পর উত্তরবঙ্গের দ্বিতীয়
উইকিপিডিয়া মিটআপ। মিটআপটি সম্পর্কে বিস্তারিত জানা যাবে এর উইকিপিডিয়া
পাতা [১] ও ফেসবুক ইভেন্ট পাতায় [২]।

সময়: সকাল ১০:০০টা থেকে দুপুর ০১:০০টা
আলোচ্য বিষয়: উইকিপিডিয়ানদের সাথে সাধারণ পরিচিতি, উইকিমিডিয়া
ইনকিউবেটরে নতুন জন্ম নেওয়া সাঁওতালি উইকিপিডিয়া ও বাংলা উইকিপিডিয়া নিয়ে
আলোচনা। এছাড়াও মিটআপে থাকছে উইকিপিডিয়ায় অবদানের ওপর হাতেকলমে
প্রশিক্ষণমূলক ওয়ার্কশপ। এছাড়াও উপস্থিত আগ্রহীদের উইকিপিডিয়া ও
উইকিমিডিয়া বাংলাদেশ সংক্রান্ত বিভিন্ন প্রশ্নের জবাবও প্রদান করা হবে।
মিটআপে অংশগ্রহণকারী বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তিদের মধ্যে আছেন হাজী মোহাম্মদ দানেশ
বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের কম্পিউটার বিজ্ঞান ও প্রকৌশল
অনুষদের সম্মানিত ডিন মহোদয়।

যদিও অনুমেয় যে প্রায় তিনশ কিলোমিটার পাড়ি দিয়ে আমাদের ঢাকার বেশিরভাগ
বন্ধুদেরই সবার জন্য উন্মুক্ত এই মিটআপে অংশগ্রহণ করা হয়তো সম্ভব হবে
না, তবে আমরা আশা করি অন্তত উত্তরবঙ্গের অন্যান্য উইকিপিডিয়ানগণ এই
মিটআপে যোগ দেবেন। বিশেষ করে উত্তরবঙ্গের প্রথম মিটআপ আয়োজনকারী
রাজশাহীর উইকিপিডিয়ানদের আমরা এই মিটআপে বিশেষভাবে আশা করি। আপনারা হয়তো
ইতিমধ্যেই জেনে থাকবেন, রাজশাহীর সক্রিয় উইকিপিডিয়াগণ ইতিমধ্যেই প্রথম
মিটআপসহ উইকিপিডিয়ার ১০ বছর পূর্তি উপলক্ষে অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজন করেছিলেন।

দিনাজপুরে প্রথম উইকি মিটআপ এবং কর্মশালা আয়োজনটা আসলেই খুব আনন্দের এবং আশাব্যঞ্জক ব্যাপার । সবাই এ নিয়ে যে আগ্রহ প্রকাশ করছেন তা আমাদের উৎসাহকে কয়েকগুণ বাড়িয়ে দিচ্ছে । ঢাকা বা বাংলাদেশের অন্যান্য জায়গা থেকে কেউ এই মিটআপে অংশ নিতে  চাইলে তাকে আমরা সাদর আমন্ত্রণ জানাই । তবে উইকিমিডিয়া বাংলাদেশের পক্ষ থেকে বর্তমানে এই মিটআপে অংশ নেয়ার জন্য কোন রকম আর্থিক সহায়তা করা সম্ভব না । আপনারা হয়তো অনেকেই জেনে থাকবেন, উইকিমিডিয়া বাংলাদেশ এখন বাংলাদেশে সংগঠনের নিবন্ধনের জন্য কাজ করছে । সংগঠনের কাছে বর্তমানে নিজস্ব কোন তহবিলও নেই । আমরা সব কাজই আন–অফিসিয়ালি করে যাচ্ছি । এখানে বলে রাখা ভাল, যেহেতু এই মিটআপ একটি স্থানীয় অনুষ্ঠান, তাই উইকিমিডিয়া মুভমেন্টে এ ধরণের অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ দেবার ব্যাপারে কোন রকম পার্টিসিপেশন গ্রান্ট সাধারণত দেয়া হয় না । তবে আমাদের সংগঠনের নিজস্ব তহবিল তৈরি হলে পরবর্তীতে আমরা যখন আর্থিক নীতিমালা করবো তখন বাংলাদেশের প্রেক্ষাপট বিবেচনায় অনেক কিছুই করা হবে আশা রাখি ।

তবে স্থানীয় আয়োজকেরা বাইরে থেকে আগত অতিথিদের জন্য রেস্ট হাউসের ব্যবস্থা করেছেন, তাই যদি কেউ যেতে চান তবে রেস্ট হাউসের জন্য আমাদের সাথে সত্ত্বর যোগাযোগ করার অনুরোধ করছি । দিনাজপুরের প্রথম মিটআপ এর সাফল্য কামনা করছি ।

মিটআপ, যার মূল আয়োজক দিনাজপুরের উইকিপিডিয়ানগণ। দিনাজপুরের এই
উইকিপিডিয়া মিটআপ শুধু দিনাজপুরের প্রথম মিটআপই নয়, বরং এটি হচ্ছে রংপুর
বিভাগের প্রথম উইকিপিডিয়া মিটআপ ও রাজশাহীর পর উত্তরবঙ্গের দ্বিতীয়
উইকিপিডিয়া মিটআপ। মিটআপটি সম্পর্কে বিস্তারিত জানা যাবে এর উইকিপিডিয়া
পাতা [১] ও ফেসবুক ইভেন্ট পাতায় [২]।

মিটআপের স্থান: কারিতাস, দিনাজপুর সদর, দিনাজপুর
সময়: সকাল ১০:০০টা থেকে দুপুর ০১:০০টা
আলোচ্য বিষয়: উইকিপিডিয়ানদের সাথে সাধারণ পরিচিতি, উইকিমিডিয়া
ইনকিউবেটরে নতুন জন্ম নেওয়া সাঁওতালি উইকিপিডিয়া ও বাংলা উইকিপিডিয়া নিয়ে
আলোচনা। এছাড়াও মিটআপে থাকছে উইকিপিডিয়ায় অবদানের ওপর হাতেকলমে
প্রশিক্ষণমূলক ওয়ার্কশপ। এছাড়াও উপস্থিত আগ্রহীদের উইকিপিডিয়া ও
উইকিমিডিয়া বাংলাদেশ সংক্রান্ত বিভিন্ন প্রশ্নের জবাবও প্রদান করা হবে।
মিটআপে অংশগ্রহণকারী বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তিদের মধ্যে আছেন হাজী মোহাম্মদ দানেশ
বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের কম্পিউটার বিজ্ঞান ও প্রকৌশল
অনুষদের সম্মানিত ডিন মহোদয়।

যদিও অনুমেয় যে প্রায় তিনশ কিলোমিটার পাড়ি দিয়ে আমাদের ঢাকার বেশিরভাগ
বন্ধুদেরই সবার জন্য উন্মুক্ত এই মিটআপে অংশগ্রহণ করা হয়তো সম্ভব হবে
না, তবে আমরা আশা করি অন্তত উত্তরবঙ্গের অন্যান্য উইকিপিডিয়ানগণ এই
মিটআপে যোগ দেবেন। বিশেষ করে উত্তরবঙ্গের প্রথম মিটআপ আয়োজনকারী
রাজশাহীর উইকিপিডিয়ানদের আমরা এই মিটআপে বিশেষভাবে আশা করি। আপনারা হয়তো
ইতিমধ্যেই জেনে থাকবেন, রাজশাহীর সক্রিয় উইকিপিডিয়াগণ ইতিমধ্যেই প্রথম
মিটআপসহ উইকিপিডিয়ার ১০ বছর পূর্তি উপলক্ষে অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজন করেছিলেন।

দিনাজপুরে প্রথম উইকিপিডিয়া মিটআপ অনুষ্ঠিত

প্রিয় সুধী,

গত শুক্রবার, ৮ জুন, ২০১২ তারিখে
দিনাজপুরের কারিতাসের আঞ্চলিক অফিস
প্রাঙ্গনে দিনাজপুরের প্রথম
উইকিপিডিয়া মিটআপটি অত্যন্ত
সফলতার সাথে
অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছে [১]। এই মিটআপের বেশ
কতোগুলো উল্লেখযোগ্য দিক আছে যা
পূর্বের সব মিটআপ থেকে এটিকে আলাদা
প্রমাণ করেছে। উদাহরণস্বরূপ অন্য সব
বার প্রথম উইকিপিডিয়া মিটআপ বাংলা
উইকিপিডিয়াকে ফোকাস করে হলেও এই
প্রথমবারের মতো কোনো মিটআপ
অনুষ্ঠিত হলো সান্তাল বা সাঁওতালি
উইকিপিডিয়াকে ফোকাস করে। তাই বলা
যায় এটি শুধু দিনাজপুরের প্রথম
উইকিপিডিয়া মিটআপ-ই নয় বরং সেই সাথে
বাংলাদেশে অনুষ্ঠিত প্রথম সান্তাল
উইকিপিডিয়া মিটআপ!

এই মিটআপে সব মিলিয়ে প্রায় ত্রিশ থেকে
চল্লিশজন মানুষ অংশগ্রহণ করেছিলেন।
এই ত্রিশ জন অংশগ্রহণকারীর মধ্যে
দশজন, অর্থাৎ প্রায় এক তৃতীয়াংশ ছিলেন
নারী। বাংলাদেশে সম্ভবত এই প্রথম
কোনো উইকিমিটআপে এতো বেশি অনুপাতে
নারীদের উপস্থিতি ছিলো।
অংশগ্রহণকারীদের বেশিরভাগ-ই ছিলেন
শিক্ষার্থী --
যাঁরা উইকিপিডিয়া থেকে সরাসরি উপকৃত
হতে পারেন ও তাঁদের মধ্যে অনেকে
হচ্ছেনও। মিটআপে বিশিষ্ট
ব্যক্তিদের মধ্যে উপস্থিত ছিলেন
হাজী মোহাম্মদ
দানেশ বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তি
বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের কম্পিউটার
বিজ্ঞান ও প্রকৌশল
অনুষদের সম্মানিত ডিন মহোদয়।

মিটআপের প্রথমেই সাঁওতালি
উইকিপিডিয়া নিয়ে কিছু প্রাথমিক
বক্তব্য প্রদান
করা হয় ও এর পেছনের প্রচেষ্টাগুলো
আগ্রহীদের জানানো হয়। এছাড়াও উপস্থিত
অতিথিবৃন্দ তাঁদের স্বাগত বক্তব্য
দেন। অতঃপর উইকিপিডিয়া নিয়ে প্রায় আড়াই
ঘণ্টাব্যাপী একটি ওয়ার্কশপ
পরিচালিত হয়। দুপুরের খাবারের
বিরতির পর
সান্তালি সম্প্রদায়সহ উত্তরবঙ্গের
বিভিন্ন স্থানে উইকিপিডিয়াকে, বিশেষ
করে বাংলা উইকিপিডিয়াকে জনপ্রিয়
করার জন্য কি কি কাজ করা যেতে পারে ও
এক্ষেত্রে উইকিমিডিয়া বাংলাদেশ কি
ধরনের সাহায্য করতে পারে তা নিয়ে
আলোচনা হয়। উল্লেখ্য উইকিমিডিয়া
বাংলাদেশের পক্ষ থেকে আমি উক্ত মিটআপে
যোগদান করি। এ আলোচনাগুলো
অংশগ্রহণকারীরা ভালো সাড়া দেন ও
তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে আশা আইডিয়াগুলো
বিশ্লেষণ করাসহ অনেক ক্ষেত্রেই সেগুলোর
প্রতি সমর্থন জানান।

মিটআপটির মূল আয়োজনে ছিলেন
বাংলাদেশে সান্তালি উইকিপিডিয়া
শুরুর মূল
উদ্যোক্তাগণ, যাঁদের মধ্যে আছে মি.
সমর মাইকেল সরেন, সালভাতর পাউরিয়া, ও
আলবিনুস সরেন। এছাড়াও সংগঠন হিসেবে
আয়োজক ছিলো কারিতাস বাংলাদেশ ও
সান্তাল গ্রাজুয়েটস অ্যাসোসিয়েশন
অফ বাংলাদেশ। আয়োজকদের প্রতি অসংখ্য
কৃতজ্ঞতা এতো সুন্দরভাবে মিটআপ ও
ওয়ার্কশপটি আয়োজনের জন্য।

উত্তরবঙ্গে উইকিপিডিয়া আন্দোলন
আরও বেশি এগিয়ে যাক -- এই শুভকামনা।

একঝাঁক উচ্ছল মানুষের মিলনমেলা
মানেই অনেক বড় কিছু।
সাঁওতালী উইকিপিডিয়ার জন্য অনেক
অনেক শুভকামনা। উইকিমিডিয়া বাংলাদেশের
পক্ষ থেকে তানভির ভাই অংশগ্রহণ করায়
ধন্যবাদ জ্ঞাপন করছি।
আর এই মিটআপের সফল সমাপ্তির জন্য এর
আয়োজকদেরও অভিনন্দন জানাচ্ছি।
