CIS-A2K Budget, Utilization Report and proposed revision

Dear All,

In our effort to increase transparency with the working of CIS-A2K programme, we are sharing with you the A2K Programme Budget along with the Utilization for the period Sept. 2012 to February 2013 [1]. We intended to share this with you by mid April, but it got delayed, as we felt the need to propose revisions to the budget in the context of the A2K Work Plans. Apologies for this delay.

The proposed revisions to the budget along with some notes are here [2]. We would appreciate your feedback and suggestions on this. Based on the feedback received from you, we will approach the Wikimedia Foundation seeking for approval of the revised budget. It will be very useful to hear from you on the proposed revisions to the A2K grant budget before May 20, 2013.

Looking forward to your feedback.

Warmly,
Vishnu

CIS-A2K Work Plan (Draft)

Dear All,

CIS-A2K Team would like to share with you it's draft Work Plan (2013-2014) for Indian language Wikimedia projects. The detailed work plan can be found here. [1]  The main objective of this document is to present a detailed plan with projection of outcomes and expected impact of the A2K programme activities, during the next 15 months.

The A2K team has, over the last two months, extensively engaged with various stakeholders in developing these plans. These include a) some Wikimedia India Community members across various Indian language Wikimedia projects; b) some English Language Wikimedia community members from India; c) Wikimedia India Chapter Executive Committee; d) some potential institutional partners; e) a few like minded advocates of free knowledge; f) A2K Programme Adviser Dr. Tejaswini Niranjana; and last but not least g) a few of the Wikimedia Foundation staff.  We are extremely thankful to all of them who have taken time out in sharing their ideas and opinions and in actively giving feedback, which has helped us immensely in drawing up these plans.  This document has been made keeping in mind the objectives, opportunities and challenges faced by each of the Indian language Wikimedia projects.

We welcome your feedback and suggestions to further refine these plans. However, for the sake of structured engagement, we would request you to please read the following guidelines [2] on how to share your feedback. We would deeply appreciate if you could share your valuable feedback in the next three weeks based on which we will revise the plans.

Looking forward to receiving your inputs.

Thank you,

T. Vishnu Vardhan
Programme Director

Dear Team,

We will be supporting this event(s). Please help Sucheta, Rangan and Jayanta mobilize more Kolkata based Wikipedians (and potential Wikipedians) to attend this.

<at> Sucheta, Yuvi, Harsh, Rangan and Jayanta:

1) We will be reimbursing Harsh's travel to and fro to Kolkata for this event as part of CIS-A2K support. Please get in touch with our Accounts Officer Ms. Usha who is copied here.
2) Please kindly acknowledge CIS for supporting this event. You can find our logo at www.cis-india.org. :-)
3) It would be nice if you could send us couple of blogs about the event which can be put up on CIS website. Please touch base with Prasad, who is copied on this. We would encourage Harsh and Yuvi to also write separate blogs based on their experience or learnings from the event and how you all see sustaining the momentum you have created through the Media Wiki workshop. Please feel free to use these write-ups in any other location on or off the web. Visit www.cis-india.org to see a sample of our blogs.
4) It will be useful if you actively involve as many Bengali wikipedians (even remotely if possible) as possible in this, so that you will help build an interface with the interested tech guys and content contributors. Bengali Wikipedia needs a major boost. Also Bengal related content on en.wikipedia needs lot more additions. Do also focus on on-wiki activities please.
5) Do  not hesitate to touch base with me or anyone else on CIS-A2K team if you need any clarifications or support.

Make it a big success and lots of fun :-)

All the best.

Wikimedia India needs your support: Our First Fundraiser

Cross posting to reach mass, apologies if you have already read this!

Dear all,

On the second anniversary of the Chapter, we made public our intention of running our first fundraiser. Going ahead with the first phase of this plan, we will be running a central site notice on the chapter website for a period of two calendar months starting 1 February, 2013. In the second phase of this plan, we aim to approach high networth individuals and corporates in the month of March 2013. This will be done using personal and professional networks of current and past EC members, staff, volunteers among others.

Suggestions, help and support from the community on what we can do to ensure success of this fundraiser are welcome. Every drop counts :)

Donations can be made by Online Bank Transfer (NEFT/RTGS) or by sending us a Cheque through snail mail. We are unable to accept card payments at this current time. Link to the donation page on our website: http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Donate

Thanking you,
Executive Committee,
Wikimedia India.

*Reasoning* (From our public statement on 4 January, 2013)

A lot of people may ask why the chapter needs a fundraiser when it has access to WMF funding. The answer is, we are still ineligible for FDC of WMF (we hope to be eligible for the second round of funding in 2013) and would need to rely on grants, spending of which is restricted by the WMF. Since formation, the chapter has relied heavily on the Executive Committee to take on the burden of running the show. In an ideal world, the EC would like to take on the role of guiding the chapter rather than actually be responsible for operations after two years of incorporation, which should be best done by professionals rather than volunteers in their spare time.

The chapter has hired an employee (Sowmyan Tirumurti, our Executive Manager) as well as plans to lease its own office premises in Bangalore. We will need the help of those volunteers who are in a position to support us. It could be a small individual donation or in the form of a corporate donation from an institution. A small token of support from you could go a long way in helping us achieving our goals of furthering the movement in India.

First Ever MediaWiki Workshop in Kolkata!

[Sorry, the subject part was missing on the last e-mail.]

Hello Everyone,

This is Sucheta. I am an OPW intern at MediaWiki, based in Kolkata. The newly formed Mozilla Community of Kolkata is organizing a 2 day ( Jan 5 - Jan 6 ) event dedicated to Free and Open Source Software and various Mozilla initiatives, where participants will get chance to interact with professional developers and renowned FOSS activists as well as some Mozilla Representatives from the Mozilla India Community. And they want to have a MediaWiki part as well and had approached me for the same. I had approached few people from MediaWiki and checked if they could come over. But Santhosh, Yuvi Panda, and Harsh Kothari seem to be occupied at that specific period of time, although they are ready to help remotely. So, I am planning to do one small workshop on MediaWiki there, with 10-15 students maybe. It would be great to have your support, and suggestions are welcome too.

Here is the event’s official  website:  http://moztiatbesu.co.nr/

I have been planning this workshop with Yuvi Panda and  Harsh Kothari and here’s basically what we had in mind for the workshop:

  • Userscripts and Gadgets:

     'Lesson Plan':

  1. Environment (JS, Dev Toolbar, Common.js, importScript, mw.loader.load)
  2. Data (API, API Sandbox, actions)
  3. Accessing Data from the Environment (AJAX concepts, mw.API, mw.loader.using)

  • Introduction to IRC: People should get the idea of the amazing community out there! So, I thought IRC environment should get them that feel, and would also help them for future work. I am thinking of introducing them to the channel #mediawiki on freenode.

So, if you know people in Kolkata who would be interested in getting a technical introduction to Mediawiki, please ask them to attend! Do forward it to the relevant lists too!

Thanks for the support!

Cheers,
Sucheta

MozCafe Kolkata

Hi,

I'm Sayak Sarkar a Mozilla Rep originally from Kolkata, but currently based in Pune.

I'm currently at Kolkata and was planning a MozCafe meetup with all Open Source Enthusiasts along with all Mozilla volunteers from Kolkata and the surrounding regions.

I know that the Kolkata chapter of the Wikipedia groups is quite active and was wondering if you would be interested in joining us for the meetup.

You can find the link to the event's agenda here: https://india.etherpad.mozilla.org/MozCafe-Kolkata

We currently have a very flourishing FOSS community in Pune in collaboration with all Open-source groups there such as Wikipedia, Drupal and Pune-LUG, and I was wondering if we can have something similar setup in Kolkata as well.

Please do go through the link and let me know what are thoughts about it. It would be great to have the Wikipedia Kolkata group on-board for this meet as well.

[Also, sorry for the cross-posting, wasn't quite sure which list would be appropriate.]

Regards,
Sayak

The blog post

Hi all,
My story 'Editing Wikipedia and overcoming a generation gap' for Wikimedia Blog got published a few days back.
Here is the Link: http://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/10/26/editing-wikipedia-and-overcoming-a-generation-gap/

Its about my experience of editing Wikipedia with my Dida. It was indeed a very beautiful feeling.
I am looking to forward to take her along to the meetups and get acquainted with other editors!

Thanks for the support.
