WikiBhasha Beta - introduction and workshop invitation

Hello Everyone

You may be aware of the tool - WikiBhasha Beta - that Microsoft Research has made available for Wikipedia.
WikiBhasha is a multilingual content creation tool that has been contributed as open-source extension
to MediaWiki, as well as a bookmarklet and a user script in Wikipedia. WikiBhasha focuses the user on
creation of content in target language Wikipedia, either with content that is created fresh, or content
sourced from the large English Wikipedia. I belong to Microsoft Research India - where WikiBhasha was
conceptualized and most of the development took place.

WikiBhasha was announced on Wikimedia Foundation blog
(http://blog.wikimedia.org/blog/2010/10/18/wikibhasha/) in October 2010, and the installable
bookmarklet is available from the WikiBhasha home page
www.wikibhasha.org<http://www.wikibhasha.org>. We welcome you to install it (it just involves
adding a bookmark in your browser), and take it for a test drive. The user documents and a quick video tour
are provided in the WikiBhasha home, with a set of discussion forums to discuss your experience. The link
to the open sourced WikiBhasha code in MediaWiki is also available on this website.

We hope that you will find WikiBhasha useful in creating content on Arabic Wikipedia and in this respect we
invite you for a workshop planned in 2 weeks. This will be a couple of hours of interaction between
Wikipedians, Researchers, Developers and other people interested in growing content on Arabic
Wikipedia. We will demo WikiBhasha to you and you are welcome to try it right there and give us feedback.
Here are the workshop details:

Venue - Microsoft Innovation Center, Cairo (http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/labs/cmic/visit.aspx)
Date - Wednesday, 29-Dec-2010
Time - 7pm to 9pm
RSVP - Mohamed Nar (Microsoft Egypt), mnar <at> microsoft.com<mailto:mnar <at> microsoft.com>

We will be happy to host you at the workshop and your feedback and comments will help in improving the tool.
Please do let Mohamed know if you would like to attend the program.

Thank you Mohamed and Abdel

Please feel free to share your comments on the WikiBhasha forums or on this mailing list. Kumaran - the lead
researcher behind this project has also joined the mailing list and he is looking out for comments from
Wikipedia editors.

Kumaran can also comment on how other languages can be used as the source language besides English.

Thanks for the invitation.

We're facing the Same issue that we faced when Google asked our the
community for their help. Working with any giant corporation to
improve free knowledge in Arabic can be good, but only if it didn't
include what Richard Stallman calls "Ruinous Compromises"[0].

My take on this is exactly the one that I summarized on Google
Groups[1] and on my blog[2].

Re: WikiBhasha Beta - introduction and workshop invitation

Greetings,
The tool looks promising. However, I wonder why Microsoft was investing in
Wikipedia? Can we please know more about the motivation behind the project?

WikiBhasha Beta - introduction and workshop invitation

Bilal/Osama - Thanks for your interest in WikiBhasha. I want to post a note to this comment as a response,
and, I would encourage you to attend the workshop and have an open discussion with us as well.

We started the WikiBhasha as a collaborative platform for people to create multilingual data on
Wikipedia, which can also symbiotically help computational linguistics community in research. This
platform aims to make it easy for a language community to create content in their respective Wikipedias,
leveraging the large English Wikipedia appropriately; we designed the system to help people create
content in a target language Wikipedia, by helping them to discover appropriate content from English
Wikipedia, translate and correct as appropriate, add new content, and shape their contribution to
target Wikipedia. Also, there are provisions for sharing their translation knowledge with others.
Large content in multilingual Wikipedia has obvious benefit for local language communities, and in ad
dition, can benefit significantly the research community as well. All the data collected through
Wikipedia, we plan to release freely as linguistics research resource, along with Wikimedia Foundation.

We had released the WikiBhasha as an open-source extension in MediaWiki
(http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:WikiBhasha); we encourage developers to participate in
making this tool better, and more usable by Wikipedians. Microsoft Research works extensively with
research communities across the globe. We publish extensively the results of our research in the public
domain for our peer community to use and to build on further. Just like the number of free tools that we have
released for user communities (such as the Worldwide Telescope, Dryad and DryadLINQ), WikiBhasha is one
more example of MSR's commitment to working openly with user communities.

Hope to meet you in the workshop.
