corpora of medical discourse?

Dear colleagues,

Dr. Jim Wilce, professor of Anthropology here at NAU, is interested in corpora
of medical discourse, and has asked me to post the following query:

"Is there a corpus of HISTORIC (e.g. late 18th through very early 20th
century) medical and/or psychiatric discourse, including charts, grand rounds,
and the like?"

Any help with this will be much appreciated and I will post a list of results
if there is interest.

Best,

Federica

Conceptual Literacy

Dear Corpora Listers,

I have received a small grant to help with text/clustering analysis
of the 50,000 entries in the Wordsmyth Educational dictionary. The
outcome would be clusters of semantically related words, which a
lexicographer could then take the last step toward an analysis of
lexical-semantic relations. Does anyone have recommendations to make
on how to approach the task? Someone mentioned to me Jean Veronis's
"Hyperlex" paper.

I eventually intend to investigate the conceptual dependencies that
occur in literacy and early learning - for example, the relation
between the concept of "corner" in ordinary language, and "angle", in
both math and ordinary language ("What's the reporter's angle on the
story?"). My interest is in what I am calling "conceptual literacy" -
the growing awareness of the relation between terms and concepts,
that is required in order to manage relations in multiple communities
of practice with different conceptual systems linked with shared
vocabularies.

Thanks for whatever advice/assistance is available.

Bob

XML encoding database of tagged documents

I am currently writing an exportation procedure to store in XML format a flat database containing both numeric, dates, short strings and tagged documents.

The tagged documents include tags (or codes) manually attached by different users.  Each tag (or code) includes the following information:
  • Tag name
  • Coder's name
  • Creation date
  • Comment (plain text)
I would like to choose an XML standard that supports such type of data and would be supported a wide range of application in various domains.  Any suggestion of which standard I should consider?

Computer tools applied in Armenian phililogy ?

Dear Corpora List Members,

I am a doctorate student doing research work on Armenian language as studied from the perspective of computational linguistics. I am trying to investigate what work has been carried out in the given field in general, if any tool on computer analysis on Armenian has been already developed or is in analysis.

Does anyone know of any such research carried out till now or any tools developed and applied in Armenian language (preferably on Eastern, whereas on both Western and Classical will be much appreciated, if any), or has recommandation where or whom I may turn to for more information on computer applications in Armenian philology?

I will highly appreciate any information and hint that may help me for references on this topic.
Thank s in advance for whatever advice/assistance is available.

Lilit Vardanyan,
PhD student
University of Pisa, Italy
