Write-a-Thon hits the U.S.

All,

OK, perhaps this is a little needless hype, but sometimes, a little hype
is what is needed to get people together. Ya know?

It's 10:21 AM on the East Coast of the U.S. and quitting time in Europe,
and already we have an unusually large number of new articles today: 30,
not counting subpages, and 12 of these in approximately the last hour.

http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Special:Newpages

We've got lots of people in varying levels of Write-a-Thon party heaven:

http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:Monthly_Write-a-Thon

What I'm really impressed by are the several articles, like "adipocyte,"
"mixed martial arts," "ABBA," and "World of Warcraft Trading Card Game"
(yes...), which are really meaty, right out of the gate.

Party on!

Write-a-Thon a success

All,

Thirty people came to the party and said they wrote 40 new articles

http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:Monthly_Write-a-Thon

and made many edits, but our New Pages log,

http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Special:Newpages

shows that the total number of new articles during the whole New
Zealand-to-Hawaii August 1 period easily topped 65. Exactly how many of
the articles were created when it was August 1 in the creator's time
zone? Don't know. Anyway, it was a very significant boost over our
usual daily output--well over double the average Wednesday. And our
total page edits were probably double our usual; mainspace edits alone
are well over 500 in the last 24 hours alone.

And I would like to point out that this work is entirely sans coping
with vandalism or the other sorts of community disruption one sees on
other wikis. Aleks Stos, math editor and compiler of statistics, and by
the way a new constable, has crunched some numbers and says (pending
further investigation) there are about four million words in Citizendium
articles so far, with a median word count of 568--remarkably good, I'd
say, for a new wiki. And far better, I'd like to point out, than
Wikipedia's median after 10 months.

It was a great little get-together. Count on the next one being held
the first Wednesday of September (the 5th).

Subpage discussion officially kicks off

All,

Don't know what subpages are? Wondering what the fuss is? *Now* is the
time to find out.

The Editorial Council is now *officially* discussing whether to adopt
subpages and the expansion of the scope of CZ. For background, go to
these pages:

(1) http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Biology/Draft
(2) http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Chiropractic

Look at the right top in (1) and the top in (2). Click on the new tabs.
You'll get a new idea. All the pages that *don't* contain the
encyclopedia article are called "subpages." The whole thing put
together is--as we've determined by a vote that I just tallied--to be
called a "cluster."

After you've familiarized yourself with the whole concept of subpages,
and clusters of subpages, then look at Subpage Pilot homepage as well as
the resolution, here:

http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:Subpage_Pilot
http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:Editorial_Council_Resolution_0004

And then...if you want to TALK about all this...we are conducting a
public discussion about it NOW, on the Forums, here:

http://forum.citizendium.org/index.php/topic,1118.0.html

Re: Article of the Week

So who - or what - *is* next? A reminder that on 'Article of the Week'
developed as well as approved articles can be nominated and voted for by
any citizen. At the moment, a hard-fought contest is being waged between
'Tony Blair', 'Life' and 'U.S. Electoral College' - get on the wiki and
deliver your verdict!

http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:Article_of_the_Week

Also check out 'New Article of the Week' for developed and developing
articles created in the last month. Current contenders: 'Edward I',
'Epidemiology' and 'Gay community'.

FW: Weekly Wiki

All,

Let's try an on-wiki get-together--at least for the regulars if not for
everyone.

I'd still like to make the Monthly Write-a-Thon a big thing, that as
many people as possible come to. But "the regulars" could benefit from
instantaneous real-time interaction more often, I think. So this is for
"the regulars," but everyone's welcome of course.

The idea is that we'll "meet" every Wednesday. We plan on being on the
wiki and checking [[CZ:Weekly Wiki]] regularly. On that page, you can
announce your new articles; request help with articles; ask questions
about policy or the software; introduce proposals; generally chat; etc.
It all takes place on one wiki page.

Times:

* Wednesday UTC 0900 (= 7 PM Sydney)
* Wednesday UTC 1900 (= 7 PM London)
* Thursday UTC 0100 (= Wednesday 6 PM California, 9 PM New York)

RSVP so we can gauge interest:

http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:Weekly_Wiki

The plan is that this happens every week, except when the Monthly
Write-a-Thon happens. But we'll see--if there's little interest, we'll
bag it and just stick with the Write-a-Thon.

Also, I won't announce this as vigorously as the Write-a-Thon. I'll
probably send one reminder before (or at the start of) Wednesday, that's
it.

Bhutan-related articles need copyeditor

All,

One of our editors, Indra Adhikari, is a Nepalese journalist, and has been uploading what were essentially notes for a proposed book.  The content is highly interesting, in no small part because it comes from someone who lives in the place he's writing about.  But it needs considerable copyediting.  I've asked him and he agrees that copyeditor types should descend upon his articles and whip them into shape.  It will in several cases require renaming the articles and using proper formatting, and in some cases simply rewriting sections--and perhaps, in one or two cases, the articles might just need to be deleted.
