As I said, I didn't want to name neoliberalism after any individual.
In terms of what I said before, "Volckerism" is clearly inadequate.

But Volcker's ascent does mark a turning-point in US government policy
(and one that helped Reagan win in 1980). For those who emphasize
events happening "behind the scenes," he rose due to a "hidden
election" representing a mobilization of financiers against William
Miller, the previous Fed Chair, who was seen as "soft on inflation."
(Gerald Epstein has an article on this.) I'd instead blame the overt
debates within the capitalist class about how to deal with the low
profit rates, low real interest rates, and stagflation of the 1970s.

If we have to name neoliberalism after anyone, it would be even better
to name it after Pinochet or Milton the F, but his type of policies
didn't take hold outside of Chile for awhile.

One wonders how far back Dembot apologetics are willing to
go. John C Calhoun? Not so bad, really.

Swans Release: November 1, 2010

Welcome to Swans Commentary http://www.swans.com/ November 1, 2010

*** FUNDRAISING DRIVE: Thanks to the helping hand of Louis Proyect (see
his message below) and the generosity of 13 donors we've raised almost
$600 in the last two weeks. This is good news! But it also means that we
need to raise another $1,900 before the end of the year. You do remember
what Swans is about, right? "In a time of revisionism, faux-semblant,
spinning news, and skewed information, Swans is about thinking,
questioning, observing, and providing ideas that are lacking in the
mainstream media." (It's also about Arts & Culture.) We've been doing it
for almost 15 years with authors from many countries who appreciate and
agree with our quiet radicalism, our Web exclusivity, and dedication to
proper editing. Please help us carry on our tradition of providing you
with only original work, not multi- posted stuff you find in most Web
publications... Donate now! http://www.swans.com/about/donate.html

Many thanks to Louis Proyect, Alex Munro, Cecilio Morales, Samuel
Bennett, Michael Yates, William O'Connor, Richard Brand, Nick Harlow,
John Halle, Raymond Alford, Claudia Resch, Isidor Saslav, and Michael
Fahey for their generous contributions. ***

Note from the Editors: You may have noticed that Swans has remained
stubbornly silent about the insane US mid-term elections, considering
that in the words of Jon Stewart "we live in hard times, not end times"
and the situation will remain as bad as it is once this sideshow is over
and the circus folds its tent until it reopens for the 2012 presidential
elections. So, this latest edition will take you instead on a
geographical tour.

Charles Ferguson: Barack Obama: The oligarchs' president

>
>> Shane:
>>>> Congress has nothing to do with it. The Office of President has virtually unlimited constitutional
power. Congress wasn't needed for FDR to declare a "bank holiday." Absolutely nothing stood in the way of
Obama's declaring a national emergency (nobody pretends that it wasn't a real emergency) and placing
insolvent too-big-to-fail banks into receivership.<<

A quick Google hit:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x6499447

The idea was floated elsewhere in the blogosphere, but only as an
academic exercise. So far as I know, it never reached the financial or
mass media as a serious option, whereas, as you've point out, the
financial crisis was universally treated as an emergency which some
saw as justification for a bank holiday. The administration chose
stress tests and mark to make believe instead.

^^^^^^^

CB: The FDR "Bank Holiday" was an Act of Congress , not an Executive
Order. The President doesn't have virtually "unlimited Constitutional
Power". The President's powers are defined - expounded and limited -
by the Constitution.

Gaia Tree and Natural Socialism

Hi to all who have sight of the elements.

At our turning point in history
we can sow the well world
during our lives.

Knowledge is an answer,
and answers are growth.

Cancun is another stride,
in the journey to supress iniquity.

Let the infusing velum of our bio-planet
bring us sanity during our sleep and waking life.
And gradate our city built massing.
