Gaspé trip report

I went to Gaspé and back last weekend.

VIA #60
dep Cobourg 2011 May 27, 12:58 (3 min late)
arr Montreal 17:57 (40 min late)

6440 - F40 locomotive
8609 - baggage car
4000 - HEP2 business class coach
4106 - HEP2 coach
8101 - HEP1 coach
4115 - HEP2 coach
8117 - HEP1 coach
4116 - HEP2 coach

We were stopped for about 45 min just east of Belleville.
When the train stopped, the service manager promptly
announced that it was because of a Canadian National signal
problem. He also announced, for passengers transferring to
Toronto - Ottawa #44 at Kingston, that that train was behind
us and was stopped too, so there was no danger of missing the
connection.

We were on the north track through Kingston, where we met #55
on the south track. This is somewhat unusual, in my experience,
as eastward trains usually run on the south track and westward
trains on the north at Kingston.

There was no announcement about connections to Montreal -
Quebec #26, but when a passenger enquired, she was told that

A great trip report, Tom.

I felt as though I was along for the ride.

Thanks so much.

This is why you'll notice that one of the exceptions in this policy is that Train 57 will be held up to a half
hour to maintain the connection with the Ocean. In the many trips I've made on the Ocean, we have been late a
number of times (although actually early on at least 2 occasions), but never so late as to miss that
connection. Just late enough to cut out the wait time in the station :P

But what happened on April 22 in Toronto was unworthy of VIA and compromising of VIA's carefully earned
image of a customer-oriented transportation company. The inflexibility of the

Perhaps you should submit a question for Via's annual meeting about it:
<http://www.viarail.ca/en/about-via-rail/our-company/annual-public-meeting>

They may at least say why the policy is in place or have some details on it.

Rapido's Canadian

Hi All,
In light of he Canadian making its way across the country, I feel a little left out.  Not to dispute the
history of the Canadian and how it got to where it is today, but I feel there should have been an option to
atleast see a modern version done.  I was waiting with my 25% deposit in hopes to hear that a modern version
will be done.  I am asking all that are on this list that model modern or not and would like to see a
modern Canadian with FP40's to let Jason know.  I would love to have one of these and am willing to pay for a
modern version...not much would
have to change to do this

Cheers,
Nathan Brown
