Re: New Electronic Versions of Canrailpass and 6-Pak now online at viarail.ca

As Tom Box quotes the New Canrail Pass is no longer available for Upgrades
to Sleeper Touring Class. In the past if you were to book a Canrail Pass, &
also Book Sleeper Touring Class you would receive a Discount for Upgrading.
That Discount is no longer available with the New Canrail Pass. I think the
New Canrail Policy Stinks, & it's just another way VIA chases away Ridership
for people who like to Travel, & who cannot make Last Minute Bookings.

The cheapest way to go is now to look for the Express Deals, & save up to
75% off Regular Fares providing you can make last Minute Arrangements.
Example Vancouver-Toronto on VIA #2 on Friday May 14 Upper Birth $341,
compared to $1023. There are a ton of Deals out there is you search the
Express Deals. Remember it's for last minute Travel.

Another big change: the Canrailpass page says "Canrailpasses
are valid for travel only in the class of service for which
they are issued. Upgrades to different classes are not allowed."

and "When booking online, you must select « Economy - supersaver
fare ». Your Canrailpass is not valid for travel in any other
fare class."

Whenever I used a Canrailpass, it always involved travel on
the Ocean, Chaleur and Canadian, for which I bought upgrades
to sleeper. I'm unlikely to use the new version of the pass,
since I dislike overnight travel in coach.

Re: Chaleur improvements discussed

What improvements are they talking about. I was on the train about a month ago and the meal service was a joke.
During the off season their meal service consisted of the small entree meals that are provided in Business
Class in the Corridor. The food quality was fine but the portion size was not appropriate for a long
distance train. Via needs to have a full time cook with proper meal service even if it costs more than $10.00
for dinner than so be it.

A new station is needed in Gaspe. Currently a trailer is used as a ticket office and crew layover facility. A
new station would create jobs and could be an excuse to use that so called stimulus money that the
government has set up. Instead of broadcasting tv comercials telling us that the government has money to
spend, they could spend the money wisely by building Gaspe and possibly many other cities new stations.

Another necessary improvement. Change the schedule, have the train leave Gaspe two hours later allowing
day trippers enough time to enjoy the town.

Exactly. VIA's fare plans have been evolving over the past few years and the introduction of the Express
Deals means that the Canrailpass is not the only way to get cheap deals on sleepers.

Re: Monster VIA #2 Vancouver Friday April 30

There are actually two tracks at Edmonton's VIA station. One is a short stub track that has in the past been
used to store the Snow Train and will most likely be used to store the Panorama cars.

Re: Monster VIA #2 Vancouver Friday April 30

Those lucky enough to see this in person take lots of photos for those of us
that will not, video would also be nice. :-)

Probably the biggest #2 that we will ever see for quite some time is
due to
Depart Vancouver Pacific Central Station if everything goes well at
8:30pm.

Walter, I was lucky to ride and experience one of these giant consists May 29, 2007 on a Toronto - Winnipeg
trip. 30 cars in the consist, 3 locos, 4 skylines, 3 diners and Banff Park bringing up the rear. Backing into
Union Station from Toronto MC there was a loco attached to the Park car 'pulling' the consist east. I
remember the servicing of the train was difficult at Capreol, Hornepayne, Sioux Lookout etc, based on
watering and fueling the front cars at these stops, followed by the train moving up for servicing of the
rear cars. Very time consuming. We arrived quite late into Winnipeg ( 5+ hrs on the old schedule ). At the
time there were a number of U.S., German and Asian tour groups necessitating the large number of sleepers.
I think the general consensus was the staff wasn't thrilled
  to work such a giant.

A funny side point - I timed myself walking the entire consist from the first coach to the Park, and it took 13
minutes at a regular pace to complete the task. ( doing my best to avoid some of the older-folk between cars )

I have a number of photos in northern ON <at> Longlac etc where terrain allowed for almost entire front or rear
shots of the complete train. As you can imagine, most of the time the head end was well out of site. ( I was in a
Chateau near the rear). I have to admit, I'm sure as the train travelled thru the prairies the photo
opportunities would have been awesome. Never the less, I departed in Winnipeg and missed the rest of the
photo opps.

Re: Monster VIA #2 Vancouver Friday April 30

Hi Scott, I remember someone posting a shot of a F40 pulling up the rear of
that Train just by the Bathurst overpass.

If you still have your photos of the monster of a 30 car Train I wouldn't
mind seeing them. I'll Trade you some shots of I shot of 6411 (Operation
Lifesaver) which I shot today here in Vancouver.

Is the entire consist going to Toronto? IF it is, I may be able to get some video of its Tuesday morning arrival.

Hi James if you look at the post which I made on Thursday, you will see what
cars are being set off in Edmonton, & which ones are going through to
Toronto.

Is the entire consist going to Toronto? IF it is, I may be able to get some
video of its Tuesday morning arrival.

Montreal - Ottawa speed-up

Montreal - Ottawa VIA schedules are changing effective
May 11 (a Tuesday, which seems like an odd date for a
timetable change). Trains are being speeded up:

Train # ____ old ____ new

31 _______ 2 h 08 __ 1 h 57
33 _______ 2 h 05 __ 1 h 58
635 ______ 2 h 13 __ 2 h 05
35 _______ 2 h 13 __ 1 h 57
37 _______ 2 h 09 __ 1 h 50
39 _______ 2 h 16 __ 1 h 53

30 _______ 2 h 05 __ 1 h 52
32 _______ 2 h 01 __ 1 h 49
634 ______ 2 h 07 __ 1 h 56
34 _______ 2 h 10 __ 2 h 04
36 _______ 1 h 58 __ 1 h 46
38 _______ 2 h 07 __ 1 h 56

33 and 34 are shown as using HEP2 equipment, the others
as LRC.
