It's personal preference. I've slept well in both.

The rooms are similar in size. The ride comfort is the same.

I don't often get to ride in Ren sleepers but I would have no problem doing it again. It just seems the only
trains I ever ride overnight are the Canadian and the Chaleur.

Though I will admit, the presence of a drawing room and a dome on the Chaleur was a major factor in choosing
Gaspe/New Carlisle over Moncton for my jaunt next January.

If the Ren equipment had these two features, it would have been a toss up.

Renaissance domes

A question for the structural engineers on the list:

Is it possible to remanufacture three of the Renaissance sleepers into dome cars?

Re: Via Station Projects

I think the money is just being put in their to bring the system a little up to date. I really do not think they
will privatise it. Who is going to
buy a system which is operating with oldish equipment 'tuned up' engines with a new colour cheme which is not
going to match the rolling
stock. then there is the matter of 'rented tracks' which is enought to put off any prospective buyer. to make
it attractive for privatization I
would think the government would have to spend lavishly before putting it up for sale. And here is a small
matter to further illustrate my point.
A new station is going to be constructed just east of the old one in windsor. Now when i was a member of M.A.R.P
the members of the
organiztion thought the best place for any new station was where the old CP station used to be. On the West
side near McKay. the tracks
disappear into the tunnel and go to Chicago. The thinking weas to pave the way for a night sleeper service. If
one goes by the thinking of
centre to centre of each city then frankly neither the present location nor the above quite qualify. but
they are both in built up areas and
the Windsor bus service could frequent both localities. In fact if they do build the new station next to the
old one the only good factor is
the city bus management no longer have any excuse for saying that bringing the two buses- the Crosstown 2 and
the Walkerville 8 cannot
service the station because they do not know how long VIA will be there. Now they do. As far as I am concerned
when I look at all of the
above I am looking at two systems which are far behind the times. Privatize it? I cannot see it happening

I didn't indicate it as fact. The source was either this board or AA. We
operate in the most rumor-rife industry in the entire world. Politics? Not
even close. And it's been my experience over 45 years that most bad rumors
are true, sooner or later. If this one is an exception, great.

I stand corrected on both the Manor rebuilds and the single accommodations
in Australia, I take it from the press release that Via is not changing
the interior configuration of the Manors, merely refurbishing them?

Obviously the term "cabin" is used for sleeping car rooms in other parts of
the world. But until now, I've never heard it applied in Canada, the US or
 Mexico.

Isn't the train Gerry describes almost the "St. Laurent" of the 1980s, but extended to Gaspe, and
terminated before Montreal?

Every photo I have ever seen of this train was a decent length - 8 cars or more.

This is one region of Canada that might benefit from increased/restored service (well, name a region that
wouldn't). I would advocate adding daytime service rather than replacing the Chaleur. If equipment
availability wasn't an issue, both frequency and speed help attract rail travelers. A second train would
obviously be a better frequency, but the Gaspe line badly needs a track upgrade.

...Just because Pullman made a better word doesn't make it wrong, either.

All of those examples are following true British English or are from non-English European rail services
likely using British English to cater to their nearest English market in the UK. It's not wrong, but in this
case, "roomette" is more right. I believe it is a much more common and idiomatic North American usage.

I'm glad to know that it's not the only one, but Tom (Hoffman) has a point.

Currently, the "Ocean" has two major options (nevermind the shower option or the summer tourist class) for
a passenger's sleeping accomodation: a coach seat, or a double bedroom. The only exception is during the
winter, when a set of Budd equipment runs twice a week to allow for maintenance on the three Renaissance sets.

Re: Budd Equipment

Speak for yourself, I and many others love this equipment! As an employee when I see a HEP1 train I see an
uneventful trip! No stopping to check bearings under the car, no cutting out parking brakes that come on
for no reason, all I see is a train that keeps going and going and going! Talk to the employees who work the
Renaissance equipment and see what kind of a response you get. I don't know how many times I have worked #48
and caught up to #66 because they were having electrical problems or had doors opening up while the train
was in motion. Rebuilding seems to work for other passenger carriers like Rock Mountaineer and the Royal
Canadian Pacific train. While CP may be using ancient equipment it is very well maintained and appointed.
Even the Renaissance isn't "New" equipment it's over 10 years old. What would you and these so called "Rail
advocates" prefer to ride? Renaissance? LRC? Superliners? Maybe a Nuclear powered supertrain crossing
the counrty in hours not days??? Lets say the government gave Via Rail enough money replace the entire
fleet, what would you buy? I would imagine new equipment might take the form of double decker superliner
style equipment. While Im sure Amtrak Superliners would be great for a transcontinental trip many others
would still prefer to ride Budd equipment. Like others have pointed out many wouldn't even know the
difference! I met with Terry M (new_flyer2000) for a quick get together before he headed back to Vancouver
tonight. And you don't know how much I wished I was heading West on that train myself. There's something
about riding the stainless steal Budd equipment that just entices me, more so then Renaissance, LRC or
Amtrak Superliners. I'm looking forward to possibly going West next summer hopefully in one of the
refurbished HEP 1 sleepers. Via rail is proving that equipment can be rebuilt to be as good if not better
then new. I for one am glad to see the equipment being maintained and upgraded and not hauled off for scrap.

you redo the interiors. Railfans may love it, but most rail advocates and the general traveling public do

All Renaissance equipment is unibody (aka monocoque)
construction. Not sure whether that influences the
answer.
