The Canadian Route 1981

Would anyone happen to know what route the VIA train took in December of
1981 from Calgary to Cornwall? I'm trying to retrace the route to remember
what we had seen along the way. We were originally suppose to get off the
Canadian at Toronto to switch to another for the Corridor sector but when I
woke up that Dec. 15th morning, we were still in the same car. My mother
said we didn't have to get off after all.

Re: The Canadian Route 1981

Hey Chris,

While that timetable is one that's not in my collection, I do believe
the Canadian was re-routed in mid 1981 to run from Montreal down the
Kingston sub to Toronto and then out to Sudbury and onto Calgary on
CP trackage. My 1982 timetable shows this routing.

That would explain why there wasn't a change in train needed.

November 15, 1981. Eliminating the Montreal - Ottawa - Sudbury
portion of the Canadian was one of the cutbacks of that date,
which also saw the cancellation of the Atlantic and the Super
Continental.

Topographical nitpick: Montreal to Toronto is up, not down.

> and then out to Sudbury and onto Calgary on CP trackage.

Calgary to Portage la Prairie on CP, Portage to Pine Jct/Manson
(just east of Winnipeg) on CN, Manson to Reynolds/Boyne (just
south of Parry Sound) on CP, Boyne to Toronto to Montreal on CN.
Between Washago and Toronto, trains used the Newmarket Sub in
both directions; they didn't use the Bala Sub as at present, and
didn't do the Doncaster-Toronto-Snider loop.

Re: VIA #1/2 equipment cycle (was Re: VIA #2 Vancouver...)

It urns out there is no spare set of equipment kept for #1/2. There is still
the 4 Train Sets running back & forth on the cycle. A friend of mine off the
CN Traced the Equipment arriving at the TMC from #2, then the Equipment
Departing on #1. It turns out there were some changes made to the Consist w/
some cars taken off, & some added. But most of the equipment stayed in the
same consist. The 5th set of equipment that I reported last Dec that was
laying over in Vancouver has now vanished. The Equipment now arriving from
#1, will now go out on the next #2. Keep in mind that some cars might be
deleted, & added.

I already replied to this and it didn't show up anywhere.

Your routing would have been as follows:

CP Calgary to Kearns (just west of Portage la Prairie
thence by CN Rivers Sub to CN station Winnipeg
CN Redditt Sub to Beach Jc
CN Pine Falls Sub to Pine Jc (Manson on CP Keewatin Sub)
CP to Boyne (just south of Parry Sound)
CN Bala sub to Washago
CN Newmarket Sub to Parkdale
CN Weston Sub to Toronto
CN Kingston Sub to Cornwall

Re: Yahoo groups

>i know i microsoft is getting rid of their MSN groups service, maybe
someboyd confused with that...

MSN closed their groups at the end of February... in part due to the success
of its competition, Yahoo! Groups, and in part because their groups was
riddled with porn, including child porn. Its sad really, there were some
good railroad groups there, but those that have crossed over to a new server
simply don't have nearly what MSN Groups had offered them... many of them
would do better if they would switch to Yahoo! Groups.

And, no, Yahoo isn't about to give up on one of their "cash cows." Groups
brings in a lot of money to Yahoo's coffers... they aren't likely to ever
give up on that.

Late VIA #1

I just checked on VIA website to see the status of VIA #1 and late arriving in Capreol at 8:05 a.m. and should be
arrive at 5:38 a.m. this morning. The train left Toronto on time at 2200 but after Parry Sound and took
almost 6 hours between Parry Sound and Capreol. Normally the train take closer to 4 hours between Parry
Sound and Capreol. My guess is that maybe track work on directional running (CP Rail). Maybe someone here
in this forum might know more than me about this.

Thank you,

John
