I don't see why. This was apparently a random act of violence committed
by a (literally or figuratively) sick individual and appears to have
nothing to do with someone snapping after being pushed too far by greedy
and thuggish transport operators.

Air rage is entirely the product of people snapping after being
subjected to degrading treatment by airline employees and CATSA,
followed by hours of claustrophobic imprisonment in shrinking seats
without ready access to food or water. In contrast, there is no such
thing as 'bus rage' as the conditions of carriage are far more pleasant
and today's murder has no influence on that.

Re: Derailment blocks trains east from Toronto

Derailment causes delays in city
Kingston mishap forced Belleville VIA passengers to board buses

and the rest of eastern Ontario -- is expected to return to normal
today following a derailment just west of Kingston early Wednesday
morning.

Rail travellers who would normally catch their east and westbound
trains at the Station Street station were being bused to their
locations for the majority of Wednesday. The derailment of five CN
freight cars, which took place at approximately 3:30 a. m. Wednesday
near Kingston, resulted in delays for travellers though service
resumed later in the afternoon.

Catherine Kaloutsky, a spokeswoman for VIA Rail, said passengers were
being warned late Wednesday they could face "significant delays" as
the derailment was being cleaned up but trains were returning to their
normal schedule on Wednesday afternoon.

"We should be well back to our scheduled operations (today),"
Kaloutsky said.

OS: VIA 66 July 30th

I'm guessing the increased length of this train may have been part of an
equipment move due to the earlier freight derailment, but it is unusual for
an equipment move to be placed on #66. Anyway:

P42, 1 LRC Club Car, 6 LRC Coaches, 1 LRC Club Car, P42

I didn't get any Unit numbers since I saw it from the 16th floor of a
Toronto office building.

Re: Re: Another reason to take the train instead of the bus...

Coridon,

You're bang on in your assessments, however we don't know what was
going through this sicko's mind when he was stabbing that poor
guy...Some could call it a rage of sorts.

What makes me rage however, is what I heard on 660News this afternoon
from a representative of the Amalgamated Transit Union...he's calling
for "airline style" security for Greyhound.

Talk about ludicrous. The odds of someone getting killed in that
manner are just as likely in a shopping mall, bar (especially) or at
a theatre and how to implement such security? Think about VIA for a
moment and how it could implement similar security as well...It
can't. It's so impractical to be forcing people through pat-down
searches or metal detectors just to board a bus or train out in the
middle of nowhere.

And besides, half the reason why people ride Greyhound is that it's
cheap, and the other half is the fact that it's available.

Put those sorts of security measures in place and I'm thinking that
it's not going to be cheap or as available.

ME too, It was a sick, senseless act involving an deranged individual
that could happen on any forms of transportation.

OS: Monster 79 tonight - 908 & 6449 plus 11 Budd cars

Caught 83 then waited for 78 which showed up late. 79 was only about 15 minutes away so I waited. Lucky for me it
stopped and I was able to get some timed shots.

79 had 908 and 6449 and 11 Budd's cars. Guess there was a ball game in TO today.

Here is 83 with Spiderman 6434 as it blew through

http://railfan.thegrebs.com/VIA/via6434a_002

Then 78 with 902 and 4 LRC

http://railfan.thegrebs.com/VIA/via902a_008

Here is 79 looking more like the Canadian with 908, 6449 and 11 shiny Budd cars. It was running late and showed
up about 21:11 so it was pretty dark.

Re: Interesting point of view from a unhappy VIA customer

You are correct in that we need to know more about the nature of
credit card transactions. Centainly if there is a referral back to
anything, it would be to the VISA, Mastercard or whatever
organization rather than an individual bank. If that was the case,
reasons for refusal would be too small a credit line or past failure
to pay. It is hard to imagine anyone stupid enough to try to use
their credit card(s) under those conditions.

The "set" of transactions and the VIA website handling of them would
seem to be a more likely cause of refusal if things aren't working
right. Most people who have used [presumed valid] credit cards on the
internet have, on occasion, experienced problems.

In all the comments I've read, there are times when VIA's website is
at least erratic. That needs to be fixed and the recent long period
to "rebuild" the rewards portion was at least strange. The electronic
presence is quickly becoming the only contact you will have with
organizations like VIA. Anything less than perfection is unacceptable.

Re: OS: Monster 79 tonight - 908 & 6449 plus 11 Budd cars

I'm guessing nobody was able to see what 75 was today. That consist
looks more like a regular one for 75. I was down in the falls all
day so I didn't get hear anything about todays events.

Also my guess isn't Jays game, but Caribana and the long weekend will
see longer consists than normal.

Re: OS: VIA 66 July 30th

Part equipment move/part providing service to passengers from what I
was able to gather on my arrival back into the city (from a BUS 45).

From Montreal trains 65 and 67 were J'd together, departing on 67's
time but making 65's stops (only two extra Cornwall and Kingston). The
same was happening for 64 and 66 (what has been observed leaving) so
that each terminal would have the right amount of equipment to provide
service in the morning (remember we don't have massive coach yards of
spare equipment sitting around anymore).

Other J'd trains were 48 and 68 that I know of.
