Tom, I remember even earlier than the mid-90s, 12-car trains with an FP-9 HEP cab at the east end and two GP40s at the west end (typically the 720 series standard nose units and leased CN GP40s, rather than the 700 series GP40-2W.) The two west end cars did not serve stations before Pickering if I recall correctly.
