Tom,

I remember even earlier than the mid-90s, 12-car trains with an FP-9
HEP cab at the east end and two GP40s at the west end (typically the
720 series standard nose units and leased CN GP40s, rather than the
700 series GP40-2W.) The two west end cars did not serve stations
before Pickering if I recall correctly. At the time I was living near
the Danforth station.

RE: Northlander

as for booking your tickets, you may not have any trouble getting them the morning off, if you are at union
station you can stop at the counter and ask, but it doesn't hurt to get them the day before either. The train
'generally departs from union on time. The Northlander site does state that you can buy on the day of or
in-advance. Hope this helps

LRC and others at Bowmanville

Hi
I was digging through a couple of boxes tonight and I came across some
pictures I took on the CN main at Bowmanville during the summer in
2000. Not the greatest resolution - I know.

Funny. For me I had just moved back to Ontario and was staying with
friends in Bowmanville. On a beautifully hot day I wandered down to
the tracks to take in some railfanning. I always like the LRC's and
this was a lucky day for me to see one at speed on the main line with
it's coaches. I wasn't planning on documenting something I can't now
revisit, but I'm sure glad I did.

The second shot was the first time I had ever seen two trains spliced
together - I had read about it, and this was the first time I had seen
it. Again, F40's struck a chord with me - VIA was just right for me
then...

The third was something that I didn't expect to find but really
enjoyed stumbling across and was on a walk back to the house one
afternoon, but of the tracks buried alongside a street in Bowmanville.
Made for some great exploring that afternoon.

A neat find indeed.

Chris

Action on the Kingston sub, April 1992 - blast from the past

Here's a VIA locomotive you will not see today, the ill-fated 6423,
which was the unit destroyed at in the fatal collision and derailment
at Thamesville, ON. She's seen here in April 1992 with steam-heated
equipment eastbound at Nichols Road (MP 279 Kingston sub.)

CANADIAN-PASSENGER-RAIL GROUP INFORMATION:

Scope and Mandate:
Canadian-Passenger-Rail (a.k.a. CanPassRail) is a place to discuss all aspects of past, present, and
future passenger trains and rail travel in Canada. This includes all national, regional, commuter, and
tourist rail carriers such as VIA Rail, the current and former passenger operations of CN and CP, Ontario
Northland, BC Rail, GO Transit, West Coast Express, and Rocky Mountaineer Railtours. Others not
mentioned here are of course welcome, so long as they are located in Canada. The general rule is, "if it runs
on rails in Canada while carrying passengers, then it's 'on-topic.'"
Although Montreal Commuter Lines do fall within the scope of Canadian-Passenger-Rail, a greater
knowledge-base on this topic exists on the Montrain List. To find out about them, and other Canadian
Rail-related lists, go to Tim Green's Mailing List summary at http://www.trainscan.com/fan/list.html.
Discussions regarding freight movements unrelated to passenger rail should be posted elsewhere. We
suggest the Canadian-Rails, C-P-R, or C-N-R lists for these topics. You can also find information on
other Canadian Rail-related lists at Tim Green's excellent TrainsCan site mentioned above.

VIA #1 Consist

Hey Rob I wish to Thank You for Posting #1's Consist each Tues, & Thurs. It
gives me a Heads up on what Equipment that might be of Special interest. I'm
always on the Look Out if those Wrapped Units Like CBC, Lotto Quebec,
Operation Life Saver, & the Telus/Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games Units ever
make it on #1. I see the Spiderman Units quite often, so nothing new there.
An added Bonus would be if a P42 900 Series Unit ever made it West. :) Also
it gives me an idea on how Big #1 is, & also how it's O.T. Performance is
out of Toronto. This way here by the time it reaches out West here in
Vancouver it gives me an idea what to expect for a Consist.

I take it your not Down by Union Station on a Sat? I notice you don't post
anything for a Sat Report. But I appreciate your Tues/Thurs Report.

FYI I have Tenative Plans to leave on #2 out of here (Vancouver) on May 9,
Arriving Toronto Union Station on May 12. I also have in my Iteniary is to
go to Quebec City for a night or 2? I also want to spend a few days in
Toronto as well, as I enjoy Photographing VIA Trains. I'll end up staying at
the Rennissance at the Skydome again. I'll also try to get the same Room as
I did last Nov. This way here I can watch all The Train Action from my Hotel
Room Window:)

I'm getting a $515 Travel Voucher from VIA only if I can Produce my last
Ticket from last Nov? So far I haven't been able to find it, & I've emailed
the Person at Passenger Relations, to see if he can Honor the Travel Credit
w/ out the Ticket Stub? Fingers crossed! I have to have this Ticket Paid for
by April 15!

I hope that this time we could meet up at at your Usual Spotting Location at
the end of the Sky Walk on the CN Tower Side! I will give you a definite
answer to what goes on w/ the Travel Credit, & hopefully I can make that

What I find even more interesting is that the second car is a Dayniter and there is no club car
on the train.

Odd...

Really? I'm not up on the spotting features of those passenger cars.
All I know is those are ex-CN cars, right? Many more of the passenger
trains I shot in those days seemed to have baggage cars. It's a pity
that's not a standard feature of every passenger train.

On March 17, 1992, all of the LRC cars were withdrawn from
service to have their axles replaced, after three cars had
suffered axle failure. All of VIA's remaining blue and yellow
car were pressed into service, so you saw many unusual consists
for the next couple of months. The first LRC returned on
April 17, and all of the LRCs were back by June 2. (dates from
Canadian Rail Passenger Yearbook, 1993 Edition, by Douglas N.W.
Smith)

VIA reportedly leased some GO trainsets for use on southwestern
Ontario routes. I was in Montreal at the time, so I didn't see
this.
