Re: New VIA Monthly Pass

Rick Norlock, the Member of Parliament for Northumberland -
Quinte West, is claiming some of the credit for the introduction
of this new pass. See
<URL:http://www.ricknorlock.ca/recent_releases.htm#july28>.
Mr. Norlock's riding includes Port Hope, Cobourg, and Trenton,
all of which are served by #651 and #48.

There is a story about the new pass in today's Cobourg
Daily Star: <URL:http://tinyurl.com/l77cu>,

or

(This story will probably be removed from the web site after
a few days.)

Re: Re: Blue22

A good article about the Pearson People mover is at
www.bizlink.com/designengineering/
june2005/de_design_applications_june05.pdf

It suggests that the 1.5 km route could be extended by another 2 km. It
describes how the cable haulage works, (and there are many cable-hauled
systems in Austria, where this technology comes from).

But it is quite slow at 3.5 minutes from end to end. By the time the people
mover reaches Viscount Road the Blue 22 RDC would already be off the airport
altogether on its 22 km one-stop trip to Union Station.

For the target market, $20 is not expensive. The limo bus from downtown
already costs about $14. Airport parking has a high cost. Taxis from
downtown are even more expensive.

Heathrow Express proved that you can charge from four to eight times as much
as the competition, (the Piccadilly line, and still be a success if the
product is right).

The new multiple-stop Heathrow Connect is a product of the success of
Heathrow Express, not a factor in that success. It proves that you should
serve the main end-to-end market first, then fill in the intermediate
destinations.

On the Japanese Bullet Train, it was the long-haul Tokyo-Nagoya-Kyoto-Osaka,
which made it viable to also have stopping services along the route, (and
even to add more stations later). If Shinkansen had been designed to first
serve the market for the intermediate cities, then add expresses later, it
would have been a failure.

Railway Classics 'on hold'

For those of you considering Railway Classics/Shoreham Shops for your next
CN Super Continental or CP / VIA Canadian, this update from their website
might be of unfortunate interest.

http://www.railwayclassics.com/

"7/22/06 - Announcement. Late last fall, Ajin informed us that they are no
longer interested in building passenger cars for us, but were willing to
continue to work on the EMD E-unit project but at a much higher price. We
have been seeking replacement builders for our passenger car projects who
will meet our demanding quality requirements and do so for a reasonable
price. Unfortunately, even after a trip to South Korea, we have not been
able to come to agreeable terms with any of the builders on price,
especially in light of the unfavorable exchange rate. Due to this impasse,
we have decided to place Railway Classics in "hibernation mode," placing our
current projects on hold and cutting our expenses to a bare minimum until
the business climate improves. David has taken a full-time job away from
Railway Classics, but David and Doug are still continuing to handle Railway
Classics business on a limited, part-time basis, continuing to take and
fulfill orders for in stock items. We have no plans to cancel any of our HO
scale projects and will continue to take reservations on them.
Unfortunately, due to very low reservation levels, we are canceling all of
our N scale projects. Refunds on the N scale Creek Series Observation
deposits will be refunded to our Dealers shortly. We value our Dealers and
our customers and ask for your patience and understanding during this time.

Budd status

I think it would be very interesting to see where all of Via's Budd
stainless steel cars were at some particular moment, what cars are en
route and where and what cars are stored in yards and where, for
instance on August 1 at 8:00 PM.

BCR passenger service - obscure question

Hi all,

Where were the BCR Royal Hudson passenger cars serviced?

I need to do the "DRAFT GEAR INSPECTED" stencil on the car end. This includes the location,
usually abbreviated to two letters. Does anyone know what I should put as the location on
this stencil? If you have the exact layout of the lettering, that would be helpful. For example,
on ONR cars, it says SY ONT. MONTH. YEAR. What did it say on BCR cars?

Thanks and regards,

Jason

OS: Finally getting back with my questions

Hi all,

A while ago I asked if it would be ok to ask some questions about our
forthcoming honeymoon in Canada. Having got such a warm response (and not in
the flame sense of the word) I had an outbreak of life and never got a
chance to ask, so here goes:

We're travelling Silver and Blue on The Canadian from Toronto to Jasper on
the 12th August. Is there any particular dress code etc?

Are there any general travelling tips or caveats we should be aware of?

As a rail enthusiast who lacks knowledge of things railway (sorry railroad)
in Canada is minimal what should I be looking out for of major interest?

What are the opportunities for photography like during the trip? Any local
bylaws etc to watch out for?

Any tips for easily reachable photo spots around Jasper, Banff and the rest
of the tourist trail in the Rockies?

Having laid myself open as completely green - please do fire away.

Best Wishes

Alex

Thanks for this great piece of information Tom. I would have never
guessed that I would be eligible for a credit on the entire Halifax-
Toronto coach fare. At best I assumed that I would only get credit
for the Mon-Tor fare and since I took the Via 1 $139 Special I felt
that would be very small, if anything.

After seeing your post I contacted Via - I had to talk to three
people and make one trip to the station to validate the credit but
it is in fact true. The credit wasn't automatically applied to my
ticket as it normally is during a late train. I had to request it.

I'm guessing that the other 20 or so people who were in my situation
will likely never find out about their credit because most of them
aren't railfans and wouldn't think to question Via.

Cheers,
Chris Scott

today being the 40th anniversary of the current VIA station.
