There has been one change in the two Ren. consists between my July
and October trips: the removal of one coach. On my July trip (round
trip in Ren.) three of the eight sleepers were designated Easterly
Class and they were well-occupied but not full. As I said in an
earlier posting, VIA Preference messed up my Easterly Class booking,
but it was later corrected with no problem. On my Halifax-Montreal
Ren. trip of early October, the service manager said all sleeping
accommodation was booked (four Comfort sleepers and four Easterly
Class.)

So if I understand the capacity of Ren sleepers correctly, these eight
full sleepers would have carried a minimum of 80 passengers (assuming
all bedrooms were occupied by only a single passenger) and a maximum of
160 passengers (assuming all bedrooms were occupied by two passengers).

If you want to be able to clearly make out what is on the other
side of the room window, then on that basis the Northern Spirit cars, with
their worn plastic windows, are useless. At any time.

We can't forget about the crew. I don't know the assignment of
sleeping car space procedures, but I was told the three double
bedrooms and drawing room in the Park car are crew space as well as
several other bedrooms throughout the train. I assume that, as on
other trains, some crew members have to double up in double bedrooms
when there are no roomettes available. The Learning Co-ordinator has
the drawing room to his/her self - well, other than sharing it with
the plastic lobster. The boss (service manager) gets a mere double
bedroom, as one co-ordinator joked.

I observed some bedrooms occupied by three people, one of whom was
always a young child.

This line was built as the Grand Trunk Pacific Branch Lines
Ry in 1911.

CP Canadian Consist 1977

This did not seem to be a case with the CP Canadian. At Sudbury at
least in the late 1970s, even in the summer, baggage from the Toronto
section and the Montreal section would be combined into one baggage
car which continued west and baggage would be spilt going east. I do
not recall which baggage car ran the whole trip to Vancouver and
which ran only east of Sudbury but perhaps someone has this
information.

It depends on the passenger. As a single traveller, I would go for the
Northern Spirit and keep the bed up all day as a daybed so that I could face
forwards. If I was with my wife I would probably prefer the Chateau.

PS: Also, the Northern Spirit side logos look great!
PPS: I wrote the above before reading the post about the windows. That was
my one objection to the NS cars; even getting out and cleaning the outside
didn't help much as they hadn't been replaced for many years.

CANADIAN-PASSENGER-RAIL GROUP INFORMATION:

Scope and Mandate:
Canadian-Passenger-Rail (a.k.a. CanPassRail) is a place to discuss all aspects of past, present, and
future passenger trains and rail travel in Canada. This includes all national, regional, commuter, and
tourist rail carriers such as VIA Rail, the current and former passenger operations of CN and CP, Ontario
Northland, BC Rail, GO Transit, West Coast Express, and Rocky Mountaineer Railtours. Others not
mentioned here are of course welcome, so long as they are located in Canada. The general rule is, "if it runs
on rails in Canada while carrying passengers, then it's 'on-topic.'"
Although Montreal Commuter Lines do fall within the scope of Canadian-Passenger-Rail, a greater
knowledge-base on this topic exists on the Montrain List. To find out about them, and other Canadian
Rail-related lists, go to Tim Green's Mailing List summary at http://www.trainscan.com/fan/list.html.
Discussions regarding freight movements unrelated to passenger rail should be posted elsewhere. We
suggest the Canadian-Rails, C-P-R, or C-N-R lists for these topics. You can also find information on
other Canadian Rail-related lists at Tim Green's excellent TrainsCan site mentioned above.
