VIA trains #50/51 Enterprise-only 2 weeks to go!

As of 19:40EDT, Reservia still showed lots of space available for the
final run(s) of the Enterprise trains on September 14. Only
the "Comfort Super" tickets were sold-out.

Re: Purchasing Upgrades on the Enterprise

There are no discounts offered for on-train upgrades on the Enterprise.
The SM has a rate sheet with the applicable fares and will charge you
the difference between what you paid and what the fare is.

You're better off to purchase 5 days in advance and pay the discounted
fare.

As Ron says, the V seats are sold out for through Montreal-
Toronto travel, but some are available for shorter route
segments: Oshawa-Montreal on #50, and Montreal-Cobourg on #51.

For a through Toronto-Montreal trip, #50 has only one standard
bedroom and four Q seats available, according to ReserVIA.
It has three or more deluxe bedrooms and six or more Y seats.

For a through trip, #51 has six or more Q seats (and of course
six or more Y seats), and three or more deluxe bedrooms, but
only one standard bedroom.

Is the same true on the Ocean, Chaleur, Hudson Bay and
Canadian, or do they have on-train discounts? What are
the rules regarding meal entitlement and daytime access
to the Park car when you upgrade on the Ocean (Easterly)
or the Canadian?

Discounts are offered for on-train upgrades on all other services.
Occupancy is generally permitted from 22:00 until 08:00 and no meals
are included. Access to all other amenities are not permitted. You
get the use of the sleeper and shower if offered.

By the way, the SM may also offer on-train upgrade in VIA 1 in the
corridor. The VIA 1 meal is included if there are enough on board, but
it is not guaranteed.

Re: VIA Service Montreal - Fallowfield

I had the opportunity to take this weekday-only service today.

Train 30 arrived on the end of Train 41 at 6:17am today. Train 41
boarded its passengers and left on time at 6:20am. The two trains
were decoupled by one employee in seconds. Although #30 was only
three LRC cars and was entirely within the station platform, it did
a reverse move after #41 left in order to be adjacent to the station.

A total of ten passengers boarded #30 and we left two minutes late
at 6:25am. There were no on-board announcements, no ticket
collection, and obviously no food service before Ottawa Station.

We got to Ottawa station on the first through-track, where the 53
passengers were already lined up ready to board at 6:50am. We left
four minutes later.

We arrived in Montreal on time.

When I was ready to leave Montreal, I noticed that Train 67 was
marked "Toronto/Aldershot" on the big board, but that my Train 37
was simply "Ottawa". After our on-time departure, they did say it
was a Fallowfield-bound train with stops at Dorval, Alexandria and
Ottawa.

We got to Ottawa two minutes early on the same through-track. The
farewell message was delivered prior to Ottawa. After most of the
passengers deboarded, the VIA service manager verified that we all
wanted to go to Fallowfield. We left Ottawa four minutes later.
There were 14 passengers who got off at Fallowfield, and the train
immediately did its reverse move to head back to Ottawa.

A friend who is not a member of this group (but is a frequent rail
traveller) says there are two things to be thankful for when the
Canadian is this late:

1. The passengers are arriving on the finest train in the country
and not on a bus.

2. The train is arriving on the same day on which it is due.

This is not a dig at VIA. In fairness, almost all major delays on
the Canadian are not VIA's fault. Although I am always late when
arriving Toronto on #2, I have met friends and relatives who have
been 30 to 40 minutes early. On a trip to Jasper in 2002 and to
Winnipeg in 2003, we arrived at our destination a full hour early.
