> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6JYeEcxnUU It's quite charming, and I like the attention to details -- chatting, glances around the room, the sound of a burning cigarette. But I wonder if it's possible to tell a tango story that doesn't resort to cliches. Can tango tell a story more complex than just the competition of men for a beautiful woman, and the acceptance or rejection of their advances? I'd like to think there's more to tango than that, or, at least, we can imagine there is more. But maybe that's wishful thinking -- maybe tango is a simple thing after all. best, Robert Dodier

It sounds like you missed the main story which has nothing to do with the
competition of men for a woman. The key character is the old guy who
protects the happiness of the woman with whom he probably lost touch with
since she was a child. The movie is full of subtleties framing this story,
including the choice of music (me thinks using Malena as an opening song is
quite perfect match and indeed I feel the movie enriched the possible
interpretation of the context of Malena's lyrics as well).
Watch it again, it's worthwhile.
(Another nice short movie from couple of years ago is Tanghi Argentini,
can be found on youtube as well; it uses tango similarly to deliver a story
of kindness.)

Another possible interpretation is that the young woman reminds the older man of his wife who may have died. (Since she looks a lot like the woman in his pocket watch.) ~ Steve
That was my interpretation, as well. Especially nowadays, the likelihood of growing old together is not good. Here's a married couple that is fighting. The older man thinks about his late wife and purposefully keeps another man from distracting the wife. The couple dance and reconnect through the dance. Perhaps realize they still love each other. Perhaps she realizes after dancing with another man that what she and her husband have is special, and she'll give him another chance. Maybe they'll grow old together like the older couple dancing on the floor. I thought using tango was a wonderful way to express this. All without dialogue. Well-done. It's also my interpretation: either he looks back to his own wife, or to a long time ago (young) love which ended in stupid 'fight' like the one he observes with the younger couple. Also note who tenderly the man observes the other elderly (grown old together?) couple (those with the white hair) dancing together. Usually I do not like videos/films like this but I think this one perfectly hit the nail. It's a very tender plot ... Christian > That was my interpretation, as well.
