Re: I70 from Hays Kansas to Denver

Jana?

What are your starting and ending points? How much time are you allotting for the trip? Any route
preferences yet?

You can get the list of Walmarts that shows which Walmarts allow overnight parking, on the website for this
group. Once you plan your route, you can find Walmarts along that route and check the list.

Let us know your route more specifically and someone will try to help.

Dwight

Well, I have been "lurking" here for a long while now...with only occasional posts, but we finally upgraded
from a popup to a 30' TT.

Our first distance trip is planned for early August to Golden Gate Canyon State Park. If the temps allow
(because we do not have a generator for AC), we would like to make use of a "free" night at WM, Sam's, etc.
Looking for any suggestions from this wonderful group!
TIA

Re: I70 from Hays Kansas to Denver

Oh, Dwight, I am sorry. I posted my starting and ending points in the subject line, but failed to put them both
in the body of the message.

We will be traveling on I70 from Hays to the Denver area and then utlimately to Golden Gate Canyon State Park.
There have been some slight delays on our departure, so now I do not know if we have 1.5 days to travel or 2.5.
We are picking up my daughter (who attends FHSU in Hays) and she has some doubts about being released from
her summer duties on the originally stated date.

Our reservation for Golden Gate begins on Sunday Aug. 1st. We have not made any reservations for the night or
two of travel that will begin our journey. I want to make certain I have some idea of WMs or other locations
just in case we do not find available space at RV parks or campgrounds along the way.

Because of the heat and not having a generator to run the AC, we may ultimately be a bit sorry for not making
solid reservations for the travel days. This will be an adventure of discovery, I am certain. ;)

Re: Generator use???

we run our generator all night. we get there and find an empty spot away from everyone and if someone doesn't
mind they park near us. We have woke up in the morning to find trucks running and some have reefer trailers
which the driver doesn't control. they come on and go off all the time.... we just don't seem to mind the
noise. It's the kids with the loud, thumping stereos that get us mad...

like no generators after a certain time, if you want a real quiet night.

gas it uses, it might be as easy to swing into a campground with hook-ups. On the other hand, the Walmarts
with gas stations are a great place to buy fuel.

Re: I70 from Hays Kansas to Denver

a few years ago we went from Cleveland, Oh to Colorado Springs Co and took I 70 out of Columbus all the way. We
had no trouble finding walmarts, flying J, travel america, and pilots. didn't spend any money on the
parking spot but it seems we always need something from walmart and ate a meal or got gas at one of the travel centers

We had messages that this is a Walmart stop over list and NOT a trip
planning list???
Take your question to an appropriate list?

Re: Generator use???

I hadn't thought about a generator getting stolen. Mine is in the basement, so it's secure, but it's also
right under my bed, practically, which is another reason I won't run it at night unless I have to. I do often
travel with bikes or a motorcycle on a carrier, so I do also defer to a campground for security peace of mind
when I travel that way. But, Walmart does have a lot of security cameras, and I've heard several folks
mention security people being in parking lots. And I've seen other people spending the night at Walmart
with bikes on their ladder and once a scooter on a carrier. I suspect there really is very little trouble,
but I'd be up all night listening for noises, or listening to the generator underneath my bed, when I needed
to get rest for the next day of driving.

Re: I70 from Hays Kansas to Denver

Jana:

And I'm sorry I didn't read your subject line better.

Google maps puts that trip at 364 miles, 6 hours 8 minutes.

So that's two easy days or one long day.

There's a Super Wally in Colby, KS, which is just two hours west of Hays . . . probably not optimum, not far
enough along the route.

Assuming you're going to stop in the middle, you've got Burlington Colorado, just over the border from
Kansas. I don't see a Walmart listed there, however there is a truck stop and several smaller gas stations
there that apparently allow overnight parking.

And of course there's a Super Wally in Denver, and one in Golden, both of which are NOT marked NOP in the list,
so might be OK to park.

RE: Re: I70 from Hays Kansas to Denver

There is no WM in Burlington but there is one at Goodland KS just 17 miles from the KS/CO state line. There is
also a Flying J at Limon about half way between the state line & Denver.

The only WMs in Denver/Golden close to I-70 are one at 32nd St Exit on the west side (small parking lot,
haven't ever seen RVs there) and the one on C-470 at Bowles about 4 miles south of I-70. It allows OP. There is
also one at the Evergreen exit just west of Denver starting into the mountains but it has a very small
parking lot. There are a couple of truck stops along I-70 in Denver, a TA and I don't remember the name of the
other one offhand.

Re: Generator use???

I don't mind RV generators, it's the really noisy contractor grade ones that some buy to save money!

However, there usually is enough space in a WM parking lot to park well away from them so I can run MY generator
in relative peace!
