Re: is my timing gear failing?
If it did that, it would run like crap if at all. If it runs, you can check the ignition timing to see if it is way off. If it doesn't run, you can check the valve timing in regards to TDC. The V-4 is not an interference engine. The timing gear is not likely to jump a tooth or several, which CAN happen in a chain driven engine. (Had that happen one time on a customer's early 99 with the Standard/Triumph built engine. Andy in PDX OR ------------------------------------

Do you REALLY need the MSS system? The Simons/Jetex one works well, sounds “sporty”, and won’t do your ears in when running out to a meet somewhere across country.
It’s annoying that regardless of the exhaust system, they all seem to have the resonance at about 60-65mph. Heterodyning of the exhaust 2 ports?

I didn't know Jetex still made an exhaust for the Sonett. Is it a Y-extractor or an OE-type? -Eric Derek wrote: > > Do you REALLY need the MSS > system? Re: MSS Exhaust...again
I am in South Eastern CT with a 68 Sonett with the aluminized OEM system from the Sonett Club of Sweden (very quite and negligible resonance) and a 73 96 with the Jetex (noticably quiter than the MSS I took off but retains the resonance at 55mph). I suspect that all the "tuned-Y" systems are going to have a resonance band a bit above 4000 rpm... the resonance (aka tuning) is what provides the performance improvement, and ~4400 rpm is the power peak of the engine, according to the graph in the shop manual. On further consideration I think Eric would be fine with the two- muffler MSS system; I took a long highway drive today in my Sonett III equipped with my homebrew version of same (single-muffler MSS plus tractor resonator) and it's not as loud as my original post might have suggested. Other than the tailpipe burble (which is readily audible since it's right behind your head with very little to stop it) the loudest noises actually are tire noise and road noise, which are going to predominate regardless of what exhaust system is fitted. ------------------------------------

Re: is my timing gear failing?
im worried cuz this last year my friend's Volvo's nylon gear failed, but luckily it was a non interference engine. he just put on a new one and he was off and running. my Saab was running great, but last time i started it runs like crap. it feels like it's out of time. i rebuilt the carb and checked for vacuum leaks, and all cylinders are firing, but it still runs the same(crap). sean.. --- In vSAAB@..., Andy Peterson <adpete <at> ...> wrote: > > bad.bucket wrote: > > hi guys, is there an easy way to find if the nylon timing gear is failing, > > like maybe jumped a few teeth? are these engines interference or non > > interference? > > The V-4 is not an interference engine. > > The timing gear is not likely to jump a tooth or several, which CAN > happen in a chain driven engine. Have you done a compression test? That's the FIRST thing to do. If "it feels like it's out of time", have you checked the ignition AND valve timing? Have you checked to see where the valves are at TDC? The timing is not going to jump a tooth or two. if the timing gear is stripped, the car isn't going to run at all. There's something else going on. Believe me, I've seen stripped timing gears, and if the gear's that far gone, your engine's going to stop. Andy in PDX OR ------------------------------------
